SUMMARY:On the wrong track: sustainable and low-emission blue food diets to mitigate climate change
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the UN Decade of Ocean Science (#SDG14)\, which aims to create a common framework to ensure that marine sciences fully support actions to manage the world’s oceans and seas sustainably and achieve the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals\, the CSIC marine centres IMEDEA\, CEAB\, ICM\, ICMAN and IIM have organised a joint lecture series entitled “Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research”\, creating a discussion forum around a monthly seminar given by a recognised expert in different marine topics. \nOn the wrong track: sustainable and low-emission blue food diets to mitigate climate change\nSeafood and other aquatic food (blue food) are often advocated as sustainable protein sources crucial to meeting global food demand. Consumption choices allow citizens to take actions that reduce the environmental burden of food production and tackle the climate crisis. This talk will explore historical blue food consumption trends in Spain\, in terms of sources\, types and the ecological footprint resulting from their production. Considering that global blue food demand is predicted to nearly double by mid-century\, this talk will illustrate how consumers’ choices can promote sustainable production practices and mitigate climate change. \nSPEAKER:  Dr. Javier Atalah. University of Alicante in Spain and the Cawthron Institute in New Zealand. \nJavier Atalah is a researcher at the Department of Marine Science and Applied Biology\, University of Alicante and the Cawthron Institute\, the largest independent research institution in New Zealand. His main interests are the interactions between aquaculture and the marine environment\, climate change\, and the ecology and management of invasive species. \n \n

More information is available on his profile on this website.  \nThe 33rd Luis Asorey Conference Series in Lugo\nThe Royal Galician Academy of Sciences (RAGC) and the Provincial Council of Lugo\, with the collaboration of the Terra Campus of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC)\, are organising the 33rd Luis Asorey Conference Series\, focused in 2022 on “Natural capital and ecosystem services. The new basis of the economy”. The sessions will take place from 14 to 23 November through a series of talks addressing natural assets and their externalities: restoration of natural capital after forest fires\, ecosystem services of the Natura 2000 Network\, environmental services in the new Common Agricultural Policy\, landscape\, greenhouse-gas emissions offsetting\, biodiversity\, ecosystem services of agroforestry systems and the value of natural monuments such as notable trees. \nThe conferences will take place from 14 to 23 November in the assembly hall of the Provincial Council of Lugo (rúa San Marcos\, 8)\, from 19:00 to 21:00. They are coordinated by Antonio Rigueiro\, emeritus professor at the USC Higher Polytechnic School of Engineering\, president of the Galician Forestry Association (AFG) and full member of the RAGC. They are recognised by the Galician Regional Ministry of Culture\, Education\, Vocational Training and Universities as a training activity for non-university teachers.

DESCRIPTION:The Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) premieres the 2nd season of the series “Saber do Mar”\, which will be broadcast on the IIM-CSIC YouTube channel. \nWe went out onto the streets to ask people what they know about what we do at IIM-CSIC\, what they would like to know about our scientific activity and\, ultimately\, what they would like to know about the sea. DESCRIPTION:Bookings and more information here \nThe Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) is organising\, together with the Library of Galicia (Xunta de Galicia) and with the collaboration of the CSIC Delegation’s Scientific Culture Unit in Galicia\, an interactive storytelling activity based on the comic “And how delicious the sea tastes!” for children aged 10 to 12. The activity is part of the Month of Science in Galician. \nThe activity will be based on an interactive storytelling session using the IIM-CSIC comic. Participants will enjoy rigorous\, age-appropriate content about marine-origin foods\, fishing and aquaculture\, traceability\, conservation and revaluation\, among other topics\, in an entertaining and accessible way. \nThe workshop will follow the comic characters Javi\, Aldara and Helena. \nThis activity is organised by the Library of Galicia (Xunta de Galicia) and CSIC to celebrate Science and Technology Week at CSIC and the Month of Science in Galician in libraries. \n\nBooking is free with prior registration on the website. There are 20 places available. \n\nAnd how delicious the sea tastes!\nDownload the comic \nThis is the second of four issues in the “Marine Science Comics” series\, led by the IIM Scientific Culture Unit and funded by the General CSIC Foundation through the Cuenta la Ciencia call. \nThe comic\, about 15 pages long\, is designed both as a teaching tool for 5th and 6th year primary school classrooms and as outreach material for the general public. It deals with marine-origin foods from fishing and aquaculture\, and is guided by the research carried out by the IIM Food Technology Department. \nIts goals include introducing basic aspects of seafood products\, their relationship with the Sustainable Development Goals and the local environment\, and educating schools and the general public about the importance of the ocean as a source of food and bioproducts related to nutrition\, health and human well-being. The final aim is to increase ocean literacy and promote responsible citizenship. \nThe initiative\, coordinated by the IIM Scientific Culture Unit\, seeks to bring society closer to knowledge and research on the ocean and its resources. It includes four issues\, one for each IIM department: Biotechnology and Aquaculture\, Ecology and Marine Resources\, Oceanography\, and Food Technology.

SUMMARY:11th Intercommunity Youth Research Forum
DESCRIPTION:Forum programme \nXosé Pintado\, from the Marine Ecology and Resources group\, will take part as a guest in the 11th Intercommunity Youth Research Forum\, which will be held from 24 to 26 November. \nThe Forum is a collaborative initiative promoted by the cooperative school Colexio Plurilingüe Alborada in Vigo and Institut El Cairat in Barcelona\, together with the Institute for Culture\, Science and Technology (ICCT) and the Galician Union of Cooperatives – EspazoCoop. \nThe Intercommunity Youth Research Forum (FIIJ) was created at the end of the 2009-2010 school year by educational centres\, including teaching cooperatives\, with the aim of offering a space to share research projects and experiences carried out by secondary-school students under the guidance of their teachers. It is aimed at students from the 1st to 4th year of compulsory secondary education and is open to any public\, private or state-subsidised school in Spain. \nIn this 11th edition\, more than 85 students from secondary education and the final years of primary education will take part\, from 8 schools in Galicia and Catalonia\, including 4 teaching cooperatives that are members of EspazoCoop. \nThe planned Forum dossier shows the variety of thematic areas covered by the 26 research projects to be presented. \nThe closing ceremony will take place on Friday\, 25 November at 18:00\, with the participation of José Luis Vázquez López\, President of the Institute for Culture\, Science and Technology; Belén Rubio Armesto\, Vice-Rector for Research at UVigo; Xosé Pintado\, Deputy Director for Scientific Culture at the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC); and Miguel Anxo Filgueira Touriño\, Vice-President of the Galician Union of Cooperatives EspazoCoop.

DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Marine Research calls on all children to collaborate in the annual “Ratoncito Pérez Collection” tooth-collection campaign. \nIf you are going to CULTURGAL in Pontevedra this Saturday\, don’t forget the teeth that have fallen out and look for the CSIC cart! \n\nThe collection will take place on 26 November at CULTURGAL (Pontevedra)\, from 12:00 to 13:30 and from 16:30 to 18:30\, at the CSIC Cart\n\nWhy do we want your teeth?\nThe National Research Centre on Human Evolution (CENIEH) organises an annual campaign to collect children’s baby teeth for scientific purposes\, ranging from the study of human evolution to forensic and dental analyses. \nThe campaign\, running continuously since 2014\, is part of the “Ratoncito Pérez Collection” project\, an initiative of the Dental Anthropology group at CENIEH and its Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit. The collection already includes more than 3\,000 pieces. \nIn Galicia\, the Spanish National Research Council participates in the campaign through the Scientific Culture Unit of its Institutional Delegation. \nAs in the 2021 edition\, the collection will take place on Saturday 26 November at CULTURGAL (Pontevedra). CSIC Galicia UCC staff will be there from 12:00 to 13:30 and from 16:30 to 18:30 at the CSIC Cart\, collecting baby teeth from families who wish to join the initiative. \nAll participants will receive a diploma and a gift for taking part. Before handing in the pieces\, parents or legal guardians must complete a questionnaire with several details and sign a consent form explaining the use that will be given to the pieces. \nOne of the aims of this initiative is to allow scientists from anywhere in the world and from different fields\, such as archaeology\, forensic anthropology\, oral and dental medicine or palaeoanthropology\, to access in person or virtually the data from this large collection of teeth from children born in the 21st century for their own studies. \nCSIC in Galicia is the only Galician entity participating in this dental-piece collection campaign\, although CENIEH hopes to extend its reach to other regions and take it to other countries such as Argentina and Australia.

DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION \nFULL PROGRAMME \n  \nThree representatives of the IIM-CSIC Innovation and Scientific Culture area will be present from 29 November to 2 December in Cádiz at the 2nd International Meeting on Knowledge and the Blue Economy. \nThis event is aimed at companies\, institutions\, research centres and universities related to strategic sectors linked to the Blue Economy. Its goal is to facilitate collaboration to promote innovation and help build a modern\, sustainable and competitive economy. In addition to an attractive programme of talks and round tables\, it includes an exhibition area with more than 60 booths from companies and public and private entities\, and a hundred tables for scheduled bilateral meetings. \nThis second edition of InnovAzul is organised by the University of Cádiz together with institutions and companies associated with the International Campus of Excellence – CEIMAR\, the European University of the Seas (SEA-EU)\, and with the support of the Regional Government of Andalusia\, Cádiz City Council and other administrations. \nIIM’s participation will include a stand presenting the Institute’s innovation offer and capabilities\, as well as a presentation on 29 December within the “Sustainable Blue Economy” block. \n

Illustraciencia is an initiative with more than a decade of experience promoting and rewarding natural and scientific illustration. \nThe presentation will take place at the headquarters of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra in Vigo and will feature: \n\nXosé Pintado Valverde – Deputy Director for Scientific Culture at IIM-CSIC\nSara Carrasco – illustrator at 13GRADOS\nMiquel Baidal\, Fernando Correia and Clara Cerviño – coordinating team of the Manual\n\nMore dates in Galicia\nThe event is part of the Manual presentation tour\, which previously visited Madrid and Barcelona and will continue with two events in Galicia: \n\n13 December\, in A Coruña\, at Libraría Berbiriana.\n14 December\, in Santiago de Compostela\, at the USC Natural History Museum.\n\nA manual for getting started in scientific illustration\nWith Illustraciencia’s Scientific Illustration Manual you will discover what the work of a scientific illustrator involves\, learn the most common techniques in this discipline and receive advice from professionals on illustrating different biological groups\, from botany and zoology to molecular\, medical\, archaeological and palaeontological illustration. The book includes practical exercises and questions related to the most important aspects to consider when approaching a project. \nYou will discover that scientific illustration is essential for communicating knowledge\, as it is an ideal discipline for conveying the results of research and scientific projects rigorously and truthfully. Its contents arise from the authors’ accumulated experience in scientific illustration training and aim to help anyone who wishes to enter a profession in which art and science come together. At the same time\, the book awakens interest in science and nature through more than 300 illustrations contributed by the Illustraciencia community. \nIllustraciencia is a project created in 2009 to promote scientific and natural illustration. DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Marine Research of the Spanish National Research Council (IIM-CSIC) once again commemorates the International Day of Women and Girls in STEM with a programme of activities designed to highlight the role of women in marine research. \nIIM has prepared a complete programme with three actions that will shine a light on the role of present and past female scientists and technicians\, bringing science closer to the general public and\, above all\, to the #WomenOfScience of the future. \n\n\nAction 1: Beers with #WomenOfScience \n \n+ info \nIn a relaxed atmosphere\, the  Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) invites the public to a friendly meeting with the women who work at this research centre. Tickets for the drink will be given on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nMAP ON GOOGLE MAPS \n\nAction 2: Science Lanterns \n \nOnce again\, IIM recovers the “Science Lanterns” initiative after the success achieved with last year’s article. \nPhD candidate Clara Mendoza\, in collaboration with the centre’s communications manager\, Jaime Amaro Blanco\, lends her voice to a profile piece exploring the biography of an outstanding female scientist whose merits were poorly recognised throughout history: Maria Wonenburger. \nClara\, a woman now beginning her scientific career at IIM-CSIC\, tells us about this mathematician from A Coruña\, a benchmark for her own career and her path towards a PhD. \nThis will be the 2nd edition of the “Science Lanterns” campaign\, whose first edition was published on 11 February 2022 in Faro de Vigo\, written by Marta López Mozos and starring Eunice N. Foote\, a pioneer of the climate crisis. \nThe piece will be published on 11 February and will be openly accessible on the IIM-CSIC website. The publication will once again combine science and art through the illustrations of artist Laura Romero (@laurandcolours). \n\nAction 3: Women of Science in Your Neighbourhood\n \nMarine research takes to the streets of Vigo through the image of real women who work for science every day at the CSIC Institute of Marine Research. The “Women of Science in Your Neighbourhood” initiative\, an adaptation of the award-winning original idea from the University of Zaragoza\, will fill bus shelters across the city with photographs of these workers. Each image also includes a sentence in which the protagonist shares something about her hobbies\, tastes and interests beyond science. \nThe event consists of an exhibition of 12 photographs of researchers\, predoctoral researchers and technicians from IIM-CSIC on up to 30 billboards and bus shelters provided in collaboration with Vigo City Council. Each display includes a quote about the protagonist’s work in science and a hobby or interest from her personal life. The installation began on 6 February and will remain on the streets until 27 February. \nThe initiative seeks to break stereotypes and reinforce the idea that science is close and accessible\, and that the women who work in it are citizens with hobbies\, friends\, family and diverse interests like anyone else.

SUMMARY:Diving into the mechanisms of sponge-microbe-environment interaction
DESCRIPTION: ATTEND VIA STREAMING  \n(link available on the day) \nThe “Encontros Espresso” (Espresso Get-Togethers) are a format of talks held at IIM with the aim of getting to know each other better\, getting to know better the activity that takes place in our center and exploring the world of marine science\, encouraging scientific-technical discussion and strengthening links between groups where both research and technical staff can participate to share their work\, experiences and results. \nThese are events designed specifically for our staff\, but everyone is welcome to join in via streaming. \nThis new format will be held monthly\, at 10:00 a.m. in the IIM-CSIC Meeting Room and include complimentary coffee (“Espresso”) to promote the smooth flow of communication . \nDiving into the mechanisms of sponge-microbe-environment-interactions\n“Symbiosis – “living together” – with microbes contributes to animal ecological success and is a source of evolutionary innovation. The animal host and its microbiota form a functional unit called the “holobiont”\, which can be regarded as a miniature ecosystem of complex host-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions that result in new functions. Marine Sponges beautifully illustrate the holobiont concept and its implications to understand animal physiology. Sponges appeared on our planet 600-800 million years ago and\, with the help of their microbes\, this group still persists today and has conquered (almost) all aquatic habitats. \nIn my talk\, I will first introduce the microbial diversity harbored in sponges and how microbial metabolism occurring inside the sponge\, coupled with the animal activity\, scales up and influences nutrient cycling in the ecosystem. Then\, I will focus on our work aiming at revealing the role of sponge immunity as guardian of sponge-microbe interactions. Finally\, I will discuss how the holobiont concept has changed our perspective on how marine animals face the environmental stress caused by the climate crisis.” \nLucía Pita Galán (ICM-CSIC)\nResearcher (Junior Group Leader Fellowship La Caixa) from Biogeoquímica seaina\, atmósfera and clima group at Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) at Barcelona. \n“I am an independent scientist whose research aims at understanding the molecular mechanisms of animal-microbe-environment interactions and their influence in animal health\, with particular attention to the immune system. Since 2021 I am funded by the competitive Junior Group leader fellowship by Fundación La Caixa at the Institute of Marine Science (ICM-CSIC\, Spain). I study marine sponges\, a paradigm of marine symbiosis due to their ancient origin\, their complexity\, and their role in the ecosystem. As one of the oldest -and still extant animal groups\, sponges allow us to uncover the genomic toolkit for animals to interact with microbes in a changing environment. I did my PhD at University of Barcelona (Spain) and then moved to GEOMAR (Germany)\, first as a postdoc\, thanks to the Alexander von Humboldt fellowship\, and since 2018 I developed there my own research line as a junior group leader.”

DESCRIPTION:O vindeiro 03 de maio en Santiago de Compostela\, celebrarase a II Assembly General do Programme Complementario de Marine Sciences de Galicia\, coordinado polo Instituto de Marine Research xunto co CETMAR e a University of Vigo. \nA day parte coa vista posta nos seguintes obxectivos: \n\nVisión integrada da actividade e avances científicos nos PTs.\nVisibilización das colaboracións establecidas entre PTs e as oportunidades derivadas das mesmas. \nDinamización dun “espazo” colaborativo para a identificación e promoción de novas oportunidades.\n\nFrancisco Saborido Rey\, director do IIM-CSIC\, abrira esta day coas presentation da orde do día e aspectos práctico da xuntanza.  \nDescarga o programme da day \nO Programme Complementario de Marine Sciences de Galicia \nO Programme en Galicia busca a colaboración entre a comunidade researcher Galician e o tecido social e económico das actividades vinculadas ao sea na comunidade: a Galicia do Mar. \nDesenvolto coa colaboración en rede de máis de 250 membros da comunidade científica Galician\, organízase en 11 Paquetes de Traballo (PTs) que xiran en torno a 3 grandes liñas de actuación. \nA primeira liña persegue o establecemento de novas  tecnoloxías\, a integración de datos e o desenvolvemento dunha estratexia duradeira para a mellor observación e monitorización of the sea e o litoral galego e dos seus recursos. \nEn segundo lugar\, o Programme procura unha maior sustentabilidade e efiscience da acuicultura Galician\, mellorando os cultivos e a monitorización do seu estado para a prevención de riscos alimentarios\, producindo novas ferramentas para suplir o abastecemento sostible de semente\, e apostando pola mellora do animal welfare e por novos sistemas de cultivo como a Acuicultura Multitrófica Integrada (IMTA). \nA terceira grande liña de actuación busca unha profunda coordinación de todos os paquetes de traballo\, buscando unha transformación real e estrutural da realidade económica e social da Galicia of the sea co fomento da cultura científica\, a transferencia e a capacitación. \nO Programme está dotado con 10 millóns de euros dos cales 6 proveñen do Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación e 4 da Xunta de Galicia. Forma parte do Programme Complementario de Marine Sciences previsto polo Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación no framework do Plan de Recuperación\, Transformación e Resiliencia (PRTR; fondos NextGeneratioEU). Contará\, ademais\, con financiamento do Fondo Europeo Marítimo e da Fishing (FEMP/FEMPA). \nAdemais de Galicia\, outras 6 Comunidades Autónomas están a desenvolver os seus programmes de Marine Sciences: Andalucía\, Cantabria\, Comunitat Valenciana\, Islas Canarias\, Illes Balears e Murcia. \nÁ fronte da coordinación do programme\, ademais de Fran Saborido Rey do IIM-CSIC\, están Rosa Fernández\, do CETMAR\, e Daniel Rey da University of Vigo.

DESCRIPTION:SÍGUEO POR STREAMING  \n(enlace disponible no día da transmisión) \nOs “Encontros Espresso” son un formato de talks que se veñen realizando no IIM co obxectivo de coñecernos mellor entre nós\,coñecer mellor a actividade que se realiza no noso centro e explorar o mundo da science marine\, fomentando a discusión científico-técnica e reforzando vínculos entre grupos onde pode participar tanto o persoal investigador como técnico para compartir o seu traballo\, experiencias e resultados. \nSon eventos pensados especialmente para o noso persoal\, pero todo o mundo está convidado a unirse a través da nosa emisión por streaming. \nEste novo formato celebrarase mensualmente\, ás 10:00 horas noSalón de Actos do  IIM-CSIC irán acompañados  con café de cortesía (“Espresso”) para favorecer o bo fluír da comunicación. \nDesta vez encontrámonos coa nosa compañeira\, María Saura \nApplication of Omics Tools in Aquaculture\nO obxectivo da miña actividade researcher actual é integrar os coñecementos teóricos adquiridos en xenética cuantitativa e cría de animais coa información xenómica actualmente dispoñible\, tanto para obter maiores ganancias xenéticas nos programmes de selección en acuicultura ( á súa vez restrinxindo a perda de variabilidade xenética) \, así como estudar a base xenética dos caracteres de interese\, en particular da resistencia a enfermidades\, para a súa futura incorporación aos devanditos programmes. Neste seminar pretendo dar unha visión do potencial das ferramentas -ómicas para optimizar programmes de selección en acuicultura a partir dos coñecementos dispoñibles nas especies gandeiras. Todo iso sen perder a perspectiva da variabilidade xenética\, necesaria para a viabilidade dos programmes a medio e longo prazo. \nMaría Saura Álvarez\nMaría Saura realizou a súa tese de doutoramento na University of Vigo sobre a conservación do salmón atlántico. Desenvolveu o seu primeiro postdoctorado na ECIMAT\, analizando os mecanismos responsables da evolución paralela dos gasterópodos. En 2012\, recibiu unha bolsa Juan da Cerva para incorporarse ao INIA-CSIC\, onde colaborou en varios projects baseados en ferramentas -ómicas en acuicultura e gandería\, destacando os projects europeos FISHBOOST e MedAID e o consorcio internacional 1000 Bull Genomes. Realizou estancias posdoctorales no Scottish Agricultural College (Edimburgo)\, The Roslin Institute (Edimburgo) e The Svén Lovén Centre for Marine Science (Suecia). Participou en 17 projects de research e como researcher principal en dous projects do Plan Estatal de I+D e un project do CSIC\, baseados na optimización de programmes de conservación e selección en ovino e salmón atlántico mediante metodoloxías -ómicas. Colabora coa coalición SCOURGE (Fondo COVID-19) como responsable dun subproject sobre resistencia ao COVID mediante ferramentas xenómicas. Foi profesora na University of Vigo e profesora asociada na Universidade Complutense de Madrid. Impartiu docencia no Máster en Zooloxía (UCM)\, Métodos xenómicos na cría e xestión de recursos vivos acuáticos (Universidade Técnica de Dinaseaca) e Biotecnoloxía Azul Aplicada (Universidade Católica de Valencia). Participou na organización do Plan de Formación do CSIC 2022 e 2023 (Xenómica aplicada á produción animal\, Análise metaxenómica e ensamblaxe de novo). Foi subdirectora do Departamento de Mellora Xenética do INIA-CSIC (2020-23). É membro do Comité Científico da ISAG (International Society for Animal Genetics) na sección de Acuicultura (2019-presente).

SUMMARY:4th “Aida Fernández Ríos” Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Free registration  \nA Royal Galician Academy of Sciences (RAGC) e a Pontevedra Provincial Council consideran de interese común colaborar para levar a cabo o Ciclo de Conferences Aida Fernández Ríos e promover así o interese do público en xeral\, ademais de promover o enorme traballo científico realizado en Galicia. \nO nome do Ciclo provén da researcher Aida Fernández Ríos (Vigo\, 1947-Moaña\, 2015). Aida destacou polos seus coñecementos sobre a ocean acidification por mor do climate change e a primeira muller en dirixir o Instituto de Marine Research. \nNeste IV ciclo de lectures un primeiro bloque organízanse lectures en formato webinar impartidas por persoas de recoñecido prestixio no seu ámbito profesional propostas pola RAGC. E nun segundo bloque lectures en centros de ensino da provincia de Pontevedra dirixidas ao alumnado da ESO. \n\nProgramme de talks\nDiscover the full programme on the official page of the Series \nDescarga o díptico en PDF \n\nAida Fernández Ríos\nEstudou o bacharelato elemental en Vigo e con 25 anos comezou a traballar como auxiliar de laboratorio (para aquel non se precisaba máis titularidade) no Instituto de Investigacións Pesqueiras do CSIC (IIP-CSIC)\, actualmente denominado Instituto de Marine Research. Compaxinou o seu traballo cos estudos\, o que lle permitiu rematar o bacharelato\, estudar Bioloxía na Universidade de Santiago e\, posteriormente\, en 1992\, leu a súa tese de doutoramento\, dirixida por Fernando Fraga\, sobre o Fitoplancto da Ría de Vigo e o seu medio ambiente e condicións. Pouco despois ingresou como researcher\, adscrita\, xa no Instituto de Marine Research (IIM)\, centro no que desenvolveu toda a súa carreira ata acadar a máxima categoría como profesora researcher. De 2006 a 2011 foi directora do Instituto\, sendo a primeira muller en acadar esta responsabilidade. Dos estudos sobre fitoplancto pasou á oceanografía física e\, finalmente\, aos estudos sobre a ocean acidification como consecuencia do climate change\, nos que se converteu nunha researcher líder en Europa\, dirixindo un Comité Internacional sobre a Xeosfera dende 2005 ata 2011. \nEn 2015 foi nomeada membro da Real Academia de Ciencias de Galicia (RAGC).

SUMMARY:Implementation of Observatory Data-Based Coastal Advisory and Management Mechanisms
DESCRIPTION:INSCRICIÓN \nPROGRAMA ACTUALIZADO DA XORNADA \nO Instituto de Marine Research (IIM) celebrará o próximo 12 de maio\, en Santiago de Compostela\, a day «Implementación de mecanismos de asesoramento e xestión costeira baseados en datos de observatorios». \nUn workshop enseacado dentro do Project Atlazul (www.atlazul.eu) e dentro das actividades do “European Maritime Day in my Country” este workshop analizará o progreso e as capacidades dos sistemas de observación costeira implantados na costa atlántica da Península Ibérica\, prestando especial atención ás melloras realizadas nas rexións de Galicia\, Alentejo\, Algarve e Andalucía dentro do Project Atlazul\, así como ás necesidades de información de sectores emblemáticos da economía azul. \nReunindo representantes da quíntupla hélice (gobernanza\, industria\, investigación\, societye e medio ambiente)\, construiremos xuntos unha folla de itinerario para a implantación dos datos de observatorios costeiros\, como a base para a xestión sostible e o seguimento de sectores crave da economía azul como a fishing\, a acuicultura ou o turismo. \nA day dividirase en tres grande bloques: \n\n10:00h. Isto mesmo pasa coa auga de sea onde os “elementos traza”\, como o arsénico\, o cobre ou o níquel\, atópanse en concentracións tan baixas que necesitamos de equipos\, protocolos e salas especiais para medilos: as salas brancas. A sala branca do IIM é unha delas e leva 25 anos sendo o acubillo de interesantes estudos para analizar a contaminación e a presenza de elementos traza nos nosos ríos\, rías e oceans. Ao entrar non veremos máis que unha sala limpa\, moi limpa\, como calquera laboratorio. Con todo\, se nos fixamos\, as salas brancas teñen pequenos segredos que as fan diferentes: esquinas redondeadas\, batas especiais e nin rastro de metais no mobiliario. . \nRicardo Prego Reboredo\nRicardo Prego iniciou esta sala tan especial que\, xunto a outras do noso centro\, permítennos seguir avanzando no coñecemento científico of the sea. Na súa talk relatará a curiosa historia das salas brancas e como foron capaces de cambiar a lexislación ambiental estadounidense\, as características female technicians e as historias que garda este pequeno espazo do noso Instituto e as moitas posibilidades de research que brindou (e pode aínda brindar) á Ciencia desde o IIM.

SUMMARY:Scientific Culture\, Ocean Literacy and Engagement with Society
DESCRIPTION:From May 22 to 29\, 2023\, personnel from the Mariñas Research Institute – CSIC together with the UCC of the CSIC Delegation in Galicia\, the Galicia Sur Health Research Institute and the University of Vigo will teach the course “Scientific culture\, ocean literacy and commitment to society” aimed at pre-doctoral researchers and researchers from the PhD Program in Marine Sciences\, Technology and Management of the same university. \n\nOcean Culture is defined as knowing and understanding the influence of the ocean on society and its influence on the ocean. At present it is considered a long way to advance sustainable production practices\, develop strong public marine policies\, promote more responsible citizenship and encourage young people to launch a career in the blue economy and marine sciences. \n\nThe promotion of scientific culture\, and in particular of ocean literacy\, from all entities in charge of marine research and management is essential to increase the social impact of these studies\, as well as to produce socially responsible research that allows meeting the Objectives United Nations Sustainable Development. \n\nOn behalf of the IIM\, Xosé Pintado Valverde\, vice-director of Scientific Culture at the IIM-CSIC\, Gabriela Ojeda Romano\, head of the IIM’s UCC+I\, Jaime Aseao Blanco\, head of the Communications area at the UCC+I will participate in the course. of the IIM. \n\nLuisa Martínez Lorenzo\, head of the UCC of the CSIC Delegation in Galicia\, Leonor Parcero\, head of the UCC of the Galicia Sur Health Research Institute and Patricia Quintas Pérez will also participate.

Ademais\, as persoas asistentes poderán participar nunha visita guiada polos fondos marines grazas ao emprego de lentes de realidade virtual coas que poderán visualizar en 360º o foco das investigacións do IIM-CSIC. \nO evento comezará ás 18h (Vigo-CEST) cunha introdución na que o persoal científico e técnico do IIM-CSIC nos contará\, de primeira man\, como é traballar a varios metros baixo a superficie da ría de Vigo. Posteriormente\, por quendas\, as persoas asistentes poderán realizar a visita guiada virtual e gozar cunha visita\, de balde\, a parte da colección do Museo do Mar de Galicia en Vigo. \nEntradas gratuítas previa reserva. Só para maiores de 14 anos.  \nEvento organizado pola Unidade de Cultura Científica (UCC+I) e a Unidade de Observación e Mostraxe do Medio Mariño (UMO) do Instituto de Marine Research do Spanish National Research Council (IIM-CSIC). \nCoa especial colaboración de 13GRADOS\, do Museo do Mar de Galicia e do project europeo OCEAN NIGHT (101061165). \n\nProgramme de actividades\nA actividade comezará ás 18:00 horas: \n\nBenvida e agradecementos\nPresentation do traballo subacuático do IIM-CSIC\nExperiencia de 360º con lentes de realidade virtual e visita libre ás salas do museo\n\nVémonos no Museo do Mar de Galicia o 8 de xuño ás 18:00 para vivir esta gran experiencia virtual baixo a auga ??? \nDous projects implicados\nNo evento contaremos con representantes da comunidade científica e técnica do IIM-CSIC\, que traballan activamente (moitas veces baixo a auga) nos seguintes projects: \nProject NEMUNO\nO project do grupo de Procesos Oceánicos en Cambio Global\,  “Metabolismo del ecosistema de una región de afloramiento costero: integración de los dominios pelágico and bentónico” (NEMUNO)\, financiado por Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (PID2021-122238OB-I00)\, é unha peza clave para comprender o funcionamento das rexións costeiras\, é coñecer o metabolismo neto do ecosistema\, é dicir\, o equilibrio entre a produción priseaia e a respiración total. \nSendo conscientes dos diversos e valiosos hábitats existentes nas Rías Baixas\, o project NEMUNO aborda o estudo do equilibrio entre a produción priseaia e a respiración en diferentes hábitats mediante medicións de moi alta frecuencia de osíxeno e velocidade da corrente con instalacións no mesmo fondo of the sea. \nProjects MOVE e CONECTEE\nDous projects clave do grupo de Ecoloxía e Recursos Mariños que buscanestudar o movemento e comportamento das especies costeiras (peixes óseos e elasmobranquios) utilizando ferramentas de telemetría acústica para identificar os corredores e puntos críticos de conectividade destas poboacións. \nPodes ver máis información nas súas páxinas: \nProject MOVE \nProject CONECTEE
