SUMMARY:Morphological Adaptations and Gene Expression Patterns in Flatfish Eye Migration
DESCRIPTION:FOLLOW IT BY STREAMING  \n(link available on the day of the broadcast) \nThe “Meetings Espresso” son the formato of talks that have been taking place in the IIM-CSIC with the aim of getting to know each other better between nós\,to better understand the activity carried out at our centre and explore the world of marine science\, encouraging scientific and technical discussion and strengthening links between groups onde both research and technical staff can take part for share their work\, experiences and results. \nSon events designed especially for the our staff\, but everyone is invited the join through our streaming broadcast. \nThis new formato will be held every two weeks\, to the 10:00 hours in the Assembly Hall of the IIM-CSIC will be accompanied by complimentary coffee (“Espresso”) for favorecer the bo fluír of the communication. \nDesta vez encontrámonos with the our compañeira\, Laura Guerrero Peña\, Researcher predoutoral of the Laboratory of Biolotecnoloxía Acúatica. \nMorphological Adaptations and Gene Expression Patterns in Flatfish Eye Migration\nThe depredadores dependen in great medida of the their capacidades visuais for detectar and rastrexar with precisión to the their presas. The resultado diso\, algunhas species desenvolveron adaptacións únicas in the its morfoloxía and system visual\, aumentando the eficiencia in the its comportamento of emboscada. The fish planos son the exemplo diso; these fish son simétriwith the and peláxiwith the to the nacer\, but experimentan the series of cambios morfolóxiwith the that lles allow vivir the xuvenís bentónicos. Between the many cambios that experimentan\, inclúese the migración dun ollo towards to the outro lado of the corpo. In the our estudo\, levamos the cabo the análise transcriptómico of the ollo that migra and of the that non migra in three estadios cruciais of the metamorfose of the rodaballo with the propósito of atopar diferenzas of expresión xénica between ambos the ollos. The our data revelaron the patrón of expresión único for the xene of the ependimina (epd)\, the xene with funcións in the memory\, rexeneración and plasticidade neuronal. For investigar more the fondo the potencial papel of the xene epd\, creamos mutantes knockout in fish cebra and examinamos the rexeneración axonal despois dunha lesión in the nervio óptico\, comparando the fenotipo in fish salvaxes and mutantes. Desta maneira\, exploramos the posible correlación of the asimetría of the nervio óptico and the migración dun of the ollos in fish planos with the sobreexpresión obtida of the xene epd in the ollo that migra during the clímax of the metamorfose. \nLaura Guerrero Peña\nGraduada in Bioloxía by the University of Granada\, cun Máster in Bioloxía Molecular\, Celular and Xenética in the University of the Coruña. Currently está the carry out the its tese doutoral financiada by the bolsa FPI in the Group of Biotecnoloxía Acuática in the Institute of Marine Research\, estudando the network reguladora of xenes that fan posible the remodelación metamórfica in fish planos. \nTHE work that vai present Laura nesta sesión of Meetings recibiu the Premio to the mellor Presentation oral inside of the XIV Congress of Iberian Association of Comparative Endocrinology – AIEC2023.

SUMMARY:Sclerochronology research in the Adriatic Sea – what can we learn from bivalve shells?
DESCRIPTION:Melita Peharda\, is the Senior Scientist at the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (Split\, Croatia) who will be visiting IIM-CSIC next week. Her research is in the field of marine ecology and is mostly related to bivalve ecology and sclerochronology\, including analysis of tissue\, shell growth increment structures and shell geochemistry. By analysing the physical and chemical variations in the accretionary hard tissues of organisms\, the lot of information can be obtained with applications for the management and conservation of commercially important and protected bivalve species. \nMelita will explain us about her research in the Adriatic sea and introduce shortly the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries\, which was the first national scientific institution dedicated to marine research in Croatia\, with the lot of similarities with our IIM-CSIC because of their large multidisciplinary approach\, encompassing biological\, chemical\, and physical oceanography the well the sedimentology\, fishery\, and mariculture. \nAre you all invited to meet her next Monday\, October 9th at 13:30 at IIM-CSIC’s Conference Hall.

For prosperar\, the species marine deben adaptarse to the new condicións ambientais mediante the proceso of selección natural\, that utiliza the variabilidade xenética presente in the poboacións of the species the materia prima. \nWith all\, the episodios of sobreexplotación xeran diminucións in the tamaños of the poboacións\, reducindo proporcionalmente the their niveis of diversidade xenética and\, potencialmente\, the capacidade of the species for adaptarse the cambios in the environment. THE xenética of the poboacións é the disciplina encargada of investigar the cambios in the niveis and patróns of diversidade xenética of the poboacións\, proporcionando the marco teórico sólido for evaluate tanto the posible perda of variabilidade xenética by explotación the tempo necessary for the its recuperación. \nDesta maneira\, the inclusión of the xenética of poboacións in the avaliacións of the marine resources explotados é of suma importance and urxencia for garantir the sustainability the longo prazo destes resources. \nNatalia Petit-Marty \nXenetista and bióloga evolutiva. Obtivo the its Licenciatura in Xenética in 1999 in Arxentina\, onde also iniciou the its carreira researcher abordando temas relacionados with the xenética of poboacións of insectos infestas. In 2003\, trasladouse the Spain and comezou the its tese doutoral in xenética of poboacións and evolución molecular\, in the marco of the programme of doutoramento in Xenética of the University Autónoma of Barcelona\, obtendo the grao of Doutor with máxima cualificación in 2008. \nBetween 2009 and 2013\, levou the cabo various projects\, mainly centrados in the xenómica of poboacións of species of primates\, the researcher postdoutoral in the Institute of Bioloxía Evolutiva of Barcelona. In 2014\, estableceuse in the Illa of Menorca\, onde traballou of forma independente\, focalizándose mainly in temas relacionados with the conservación marine. In 2019\, trasladouse the Hong Kong for desempeñarse the researcher postdoutoral in the Swire Institute of Marine Science of the University of Hong Kong\, onde desenvolveu projects relacionados with the mecanismos of adaptación of species marine to the cambios in the condicións of the sea. Finally\, in 2022\, obtivo the posición postdoutoral financiada polthe actions Marie Skłodowska-Curie (MSCA) for traballar in the Project “Potencial adaptativo to the change in the condicións of the environment in species of fish explotadas” in the Institute of Marine Research (IIM -CSIC) in Vigo\, the cal é the its posición current. \nNatalia publicou vinte and four artigos scientific\, sendo the autora main in once deles; colaborou in different projects scientific the nivel national and international and participa activamente in activities of science outreach for concientizar on the vulnerabilidade of the marine environment to the activities humanas.

A plan of manexo espacial adecuado for these resources implica the profundo knowledge\, non só of the estrutura espacial of the stocks and of the esforzo fisheries that it carries out in eles\, it non also of the fluxos of individuos between sub-poboacións and\, by tanto\, of the patróns of dispersión larvaria destas species. Non in tanto\, the inclusión of termos relativos to the conectividade between sub-poboacións non é frecuentemente incluído in the plans of manexo destes resources\, in great parte debido the dificultade of obter estimadores empíriwith the desta variable. \nNeste Seminar falaremos of new tools multidisciplares that están comezando the empregarse in Galicia\, (uso of drones\, models bio-físicos\, technicians of marcaxe natural of larvas\, etc.)\, that allow identificar poboacións chave for the reposición of the stocks\, así the factores hidrolóxiwith the and ambientais that determinan eses padróns of conectividade. THE uso combinado destas technicians\, ofrece the progress prometedor for the inclusión of parámetros of conectividade in the plans of management of these resources\, peza imprescindible for conseguir the explotación sustainable of the shellfishing and the aquaculture of bivalves in Galicia. \nLaura García Peteiro\nDoutora in Bioloxía Marine and Aquaculture (2009) with wide experiencia inter-sectorial and interdisciplinar\, tendo traballado in ONGs (SEO-BirdLife)\, empresas of the sector of the aquaculture (PROINSA S.THE.)\, centres tecnolóxiwith the (CETMAR)\, universidades and centres of research nacionais (IIM-CSIC\, UVigo) and internacionais (UAveiro-Portugal\, OIMB-USA). SUMMARY:Marine Sciences Programme | PT7 follow-up meeting
DESCRIPTION:PCCMMG website \nOn Thursday 18 April\, the follow-up meeting for PT7 within the Marine Sciences Programme of Galicia (PCCMMG) will take place at CETMAR. The coordination team will include Jose Manuel Fernández Babarro\, EsMaBa (IIM-CSIC)\, and Antonio Villalba García\, CIMA-Corón (CIMA) (PTE). \nDeveloping tools to improve sustainable shellfish production (PT7)\nShellfishing and bivalve-mollusc aquaculture in Galicia are interdependent\, and the sustainability and improvement of bivalve production require coordinated actions in both areas. Aquaculture and shellfishing rely on sedentary benthic resources with complex life cycles and spatial structures\, which makes these key sectors of Galicia’s marine economy highly variable and still difficult to predict. This is especially true of spatial and temporal variability in recruitment\, which determines seed availability for grow-out in shellfish beds and farming facilities\, and for restocking natural beds. The overall aim of this work package is to provide procedures and tools to guarantee a sustainable supply of seed and strengthen bivalve aquaculture within the sustainable exploitation of Galicia’s natural resources\, addressing both recruitment in the natural environment (Action 1) and hatchery production (Action 2). Work will focus on three priority species: mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis\, grooved carpet shell Ruditapes decussatus and pullet carpet shell Venerupis corrugata. The results will serve as a reference for future protocols applicable to other species. \n\nAction 1. The objective is to create site-specific tools to effectively manage the natural supply of bivalve seed. Current stock monitoring networks will be assessed and improved where necessary\, and new methodologies will be developed to evaluate key demographic parameters such as larval abundance and reproductive capacity. Emerging techniques such as natural trace-element marking and numerical modelling will be used to create connectivity matrices and identify key source-sink populations under different climate scenarios. This information will feed into a metapopulation model to predict larval dispersal and population dynamics\, and will be integrated into an open Geographic Information System for decision-making in resource management. \nAction 2. The objective is to optimise hatchery seed-production protocols for grooved carpet shell and pullet carpet shell\, ensuring the supply of high-quality seed for grow-out and strengthening the resilience of exploited shellfish beds. Planned tasks include reliable broodstock conditioning protocols\, spawning induction and cryopreservation of gametes and larvae; optimisation of larval and post-larval culture systems\, diets and survival procedures; and detailed study of microbiota and associated pathogens through metagenomics and metatranscriptomics. Reliable hatchery production protocols are essential for future genetic-selection programmes for traits such as disease resistance and tolerance to environmental stress related to climate change. \nOn this page you can see more details about the work packages associated with PCCMMG. \nWork packages \n\n  \nMarine Sciences Programme of Galicia\nIIM-CSIC coordinates\, together with CETMAR and the University of Vigo\, the new Marine Sciences Programme of Galicia\, whose main challenge is the protection and sustainable management of marine ecosystem services and which involves more than 89 Galician research groups. \nThis new strategy will act through three major lines: observation and monitoring of the marine and coastal environment; sustainable\, smart and precision aquaculture; and innovation\, knowledge and opportunities to adapt to change in the marine economy. \n \nThe Marine Sciences Programme of Galicia is one of seven Marine Sciences programmes in the Complementary R&D&I Plans with the Autonomous Communities\, part of Component 17\, Investment 1 of the EU Recovery\, Transformation and Resilience Plan. SUMMARY:Syngnathids Challenge: sightings of seahorses and pipefish
DESCRIPTION:On 8 May\, at 19:00\, an open online information session will take place via Zoom to present the Syngnathids Challenge\, which seeks citizen collaboration in reporting sightings of seahorses and pipefish in order to complete the Atlas of Syngnathids of the Spanish Coast. \nSeahorses (Hippocampus spp.) are protected species included in Spain’s List of Wild Species under Special Protection. The information available on the status of wild populations of these species is very limited\, so it is necessary to collect\, analyse and assess the available information and expand knowledge about them. \nFor this reason\, the HippoDEC project team\, led by the Marine Ecology and Resources Department at IIM-CSIC\, and Observadores del Mar are launching the Syngnathids Challenge. Join the information session! \nREGISTER FOR THE INFORMATION SESSION \nInformation session programme\nDate: 08/05/2024 \n19:00: Presentation of the Hippo-DEC Project | IIM-CSIC \n19:20: Identification of syngnathid species and habitats \n19:45: How to upload observations? | Observadores del Mar – Marine citizen science platform \nThe HippoDEC project\nThe “Hippo-DEC: Diagnosis of the conservation status of seahorses on the Spanish coast\, critical areas and conservation measures” project\, led by researchers Miquel Planas and Jorge Urcera from the Marine Ecology and Resources Department at IIM-CSIC\, has the main goal of assessing the current situation of wild seahorse populations\, vulnerable species included in the List of Wild Species under Special Protection since 2011. The Hippo-DEC project will make it possible to compile\, analyse and assess vital information for the conservation of these species\, as well as to propose protection measures and critical areas requiring special attention. \nThis initiative represents a significant step towards protecting and preserving seahorses on the Spanish coast\, demonstrating the joint commitment of the scientific community and society to the conservation of marine biodiversity. \nThe project involves collaboration with Observadores del Mar\, Fundación Aula do Mar do Mediterráneo\, NGO Oceánidas\, Fundación Oceanográfic de Valencia\, NGO Ambiens\, Palma Aquarium\, Acuario Gijón and the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia. In addition\, the research is funded by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge under the DGBBD-OAPN-FB-CSIC General Action Protocol on natural heritage\, biodiversity\, forestry and adaptation to global change\, with the aim of identifying priority conservation areas and proposing action measures.

SUMMARY:Marine Sciences Programme | PT5 follow-up meeting
DESCRIPTION:IIM-CSIC programme page \nTomorrow\, 9 May\, the follow-up meeting for work package PT5 of the Marine Sciences Programme of Galicia (PCCMMG) will take place online. The coordination team is made up of Eva Balsa-Canto (IIM-CSIC) and Moncho Gómez Gesteira (UVigo). \nMultiscale and transdisciplinary marine simulator (PT5)\nThis proposal aims to advance the development of a multiscale and transdisciplinary simulator applicable to the marine environment and aquaculture. The simulator will be an essential tool for integrating data from different sources and generating the knowledge\, framework and evidence needed to address environmental\, social and economic challenges: exploring and predicting the consequences of global change in the marine environment and supporting decision-making for the management of uses and resources. \nThe proposed simulator will integrate artificial intelligence techniques and environmental\, oceanographic\, ecological and economic models at multiple scales. It will enable scenario analysis and ultimately support decision-making that promotes the sustainability of the marine environment and of associated socioeconomic sectors\, fisheries and aquaculture\, for future generations. \n\nProgramming the simulator requires the integration of multiple high-quality datasets and the development of ad hoc numerical\, theoretical and computational methods. For this reason\, we propose a phased approach\, in three actions or proof-of-concept exercises\, which provides a realistic pathway and lays the foundations for the future multiscale and transdisciplinary marine simulator. \nAction 1 focuses on developing a simulator for extreme events and their effects. AI techniques will be used to establish predictive models to detect meteorological and hydrodynamic patterns and estimate the evolution of the atmosphere-ocean system at high resolution. The effects of extreme environmental weather events on marine ecosystems will also be modelled. By coupling different numerical simulation models with AI techniques\, the capacity to reproduce coastal hydrodynamics will be improved\, making it possible to forecast low-salinity events with a major impact on marine crops or flooding in inhabited areas. The mobilisation of pollutants into the marine environment\, including those from fires\, urban areas and emerging contaminants\, will also be simulated. The Ría de Arousa will be considered as an applied case. \nAction 2 focuses on developing an end-to-end fisheries model. Existing biophysical models in Galicia will be complemented with higher trophic-level models and socioeconomic modules to develop end-to-end models applicable to Galician fisheries. The model will focus on three species of particular ecological\, economic and cultural importance for Galicia: sardine\, hake and octopus. The resulting models will improve knowledge of Galicia’s marine ecosystem and its interactions with fisheries\, and will allow scenario simulations to assess the impacts of climate-scale changes\, including impacts on commercial species abundance and socioeconomic effects. \nAction 3 focuses on developing two digital twins for integrated multitrophic aquaculture. This action will formulate simulators for two types of multitrophic culture: off-shore systems and IMTA-RAS\, a recirculating aquaculture system. Macroalgae will be present in both types of culture. Physiological models for the species of interest will be defined and integrated\, first into a long-line model that considers hydrodynamic and environmental conditions\, and second into a RAS system. A digital mussel raft will integrate mussel physiological models with oceanographic models. The long-line and raft simulators will be integrated into an off-shore IMTA digital twin to predict the effects of changes in environmental variables on crop quality and productivity in the Ría de Ares\, and to simulate scenarios for crop optimisation. The IMTA-RAS digital twin will address fish-macroalgae-probiotic interactions and enable the rational design of precision IMTA-RAS cultures. \nThe models and software developments from each proof of concept will be made publicly available as far as possible in accordance with FAIR data-management guidelines. \n\nMarine Sciences Programme of Galicia\nIIM-CSIC coordinates\, together with CETMAR and the University of Vigo\, the new Marine Sciences Programme of Galicia\, whose main challenge is the protection and sustainable management of marine ecosystem services and which involves more than 89 Galician research groups. SUMMARY:Acceptance and knowledge of the theory of evolution among students and teachers in Ecuador
DESCRIPTION:FOLLOW IT VIA STREAMING  \n(link available on the day of the broadcast) \nThe “Encontros Espresso” are a series of talks held at IIM-CSIC with the aim of helping us get to know each other better\, learn more about the activity carried out at our centre and explore the world of marine science\, encouraging scientific and technical discussion and strengthening links between groups. Both research and technical staff can participate to share their work\, experiences and results. \nThese events are designed especially for our staff\, but everyone is invited to join through our streaming broadcast. \nThis new format will be held every two weeks\, at 10:00 in the IIM-CSIC Assembly Hall and will include complimentary coffee (“Espresso”) to help communication flow smoothly. \nWe open our first Encontros Espresso of 2024 with a visit from Emilio Rolán\, Professor of Genetics at the University of Vigo. \nAcceptance and knowledge of the theory of evolution among students and teachers in Ecuador\nThe theory of evolution is one of the most influential theories in the body of knowledge that describes our civilisation\, and yet it is one of the most disputed theories in many countries by different social groups. \nThe causes that explain the difficulty of accepting this theory are multifactorial and have been discussed for years. They include: \n1. Limited knowledge of how science works\, \n2. Limited knowledge of how evolutionary theory works\, \n3. Strong anti-evolutionary attitudes in some religions. \nA group of Spanish and Ecuadorian teachers developed a voluntary online survey\, which was distributed to hundreds of students and teachers in Ecuador to describe the degree of acceptance and knowledge of this theory. \nThe results show moderate acceptance and low knowledge of evolutionary theory. Students show a slight increase in acceptance compared with teachers\, and teachers also show lower acceptance in the region of Ecuador where more anti-evolutionary beliefs are present. \nEmilio Rolán Álvarez\nHe has been Professor of Genetics at the University of Vigo since 2010. His research has focused on adaptation\, sexual selection and speciation in microevolutionary processes using marine snails of the genus Littorina as model organisms\, through experimental\, genetic and simulation studies. He has also published several reviews in related fields\, such as sympatric speciation in L. saxatilis\, evolutionary studies in Littorina\, colour evolution in gastropods and the use of proteomics as an evolutionary tool. \nHe has worked on the development of new statistical tools for measuring sexual selection and sexual isolation\, and for reviewing the probabilities of statistical tests under multiple testing. \nMore recently\, he has turned his interest towards the impact of evolutionary theory on education\, reflected in his work published in PLOS ONE (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0238345). In addition\, a website has been developed to disseminate evolutionary theory in Spanish (http://evolucion.webs7.uvigo). gl/index.html).

SUMMARY:ASEQURA | “Listeria monocytogenes”: a challenge for food safety
DESCRIPTION:Access the broadcast \nEVENT PROGRAMME \nOn 4 June 2024\, a technical conference entitled “Listeria monocytogenes: a challenge for food safety” will be held. This event is part of the ASEQURA research project\, whose objective is to carry out a quantitative microbiological risk assessment (QMRA) of Listeria monocytogenes in fishery products and meat derivatives\, with special attention to biofilm formation and cross-contamination in processing chains. The project is funded by the 2019 call of the State R&D&I Programme Oriented to Societal Challenges of the State Research Agency (AEI). \nThe conference will take place in person in the Ernest Lluch Assembly Hall of the Ministry of Health / Ministry of Social Rights\, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030 in Madrid. Registration is already closed and in-person places are full\, but it can also be followed via streaming on YouTube. \nThe project is coordinated by Elena Carrasco Jiménez and Antonio Valero Díaz from the  University of Córdoba (UCO)\, with the collaboration of Marta López Cabo and Juan José Rodríguez Herrera from the MicroTec group at the Institute of Marine Research – CSIC. \nThe event is aimed at different interested stakeholders\, including health inspectors from the autonomous communities\, sector companies\, academics and other professionals related to food safety. It seeks to present the main results of the ASEQURA project and foster dialogue and constructive discussion to advance the control of Listeria monocytogenes in the food value chain. \nIn addition\, the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) participates as co-organiser of the event\, thanks to the collaboration of the Risk Assessment Area\, the Secretariat of the Scientific Committee and the National Food Centre (CNA). \nGO TO THE PROJECT PAGE
