SUMMARY:Sea and Past: Accessible Heritage
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) will begin tomorrow “Sea and Past”\, a series of interactive workshops specifically designed for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias across Galicia\, as part of the “Accessible Heritage” initiative. \nThere will be four workshops\, with small audiences and content adapted to the target public\, focusing on the biodiversity and ecology of bivalve molluscs and traditional technologies for their exploitation\, such as shellfishing and mussel rafts. Participants will connect with memories from the past and receive sensory stimulation\, reinforced through traditional sea songs that will guide the sessions. \nThe workshops were developed in close collaboration with AFAMO\, the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s Patients of O Morrazo\, and Fundación Legar\, dedicated to recovering and disseminating Galicia’s musical cultural heritage. \nThe main objective is to establish a link between participants and their memories through sensory\, emotional and cognitive activities. Tactile materials and traditional sea songs will be used to create an experience combining scientific knowledge with emotional connection. \nIn addition to improving understanding of marine biodiversity and Galician cultural traditions\, the workshops seek to provide an inclusive and supportive environment for older people and those facing cognitive diseases. \nWorking closely with specialised associations and paying individual attention to participants’ needs\, we aim to create an environment of care\, respect and affection in each workshop. \nThis project is a joint initiative of the CSIC Scientific Culture Unit in Galicia (Institutional Delegation)\, the Institute of Heritage Sciences (INCIPIT\, Santiago de Compostela) through its Valorisation Unit\, and the Institute of Marine Research (IIM\, Vigo) through its Scientific Culture Unit. \nThe workshops will take place on 14 May in Cee\, 20 May in Moaña\, 10 June in Burela and 12 June in Ribeira. \nProject data\nThis project is funded by FECYT – Ministry of Science\, Innovation and Universities. SUMMARY:ASEQURA | “Listeria monocytogenes”: a challenge for food safety
DESCRIPTION:Access the broadcast \nEVENT PROGRAMME \nOn 4 June 2024\, a technical conference entitled “Listeria monocytogenes: a challenge for food safety” will be held. This event is part of the ASEQURA research project\, whose objective is to carry out a quantitative microbiological risk assessment (QMRA) of Listeria monocytogenes in fishery products and meat derivatives\, with special attention to biofilm formation and cross-contamination in processing chains. The project is funded by the 2019 call of the State R&D&I Programme Oriented to Societal Challenges of the State Research Agency (AEI). \nThe conference will take place in person in the Ernest Lluch Assembly Hall of the Ministry of Health / Ministry of Social Rights\, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030 in Madrid. Registration is already closed and in-person places are full\, but it can also be followed via streaming on YouTube. \nThe project is coordinated by Elena Carrasco Jiménez and Antonio Valero Díaz from the  University of Córdoba (UCO)\, with the collaboration of Marta López Cabo and Juan José Rodríguez Herrera from the MicroTec group at the Institute of Marine Research – CSIC. \nThe event is aimed at different interested stakeholders\, including health inspectors from the autonomous communities\, sector companies\, academics and other professionals related to food safety. It seeks to present the main results of the ASEQURA project and foster dialogue and constructive discussion to advance the control of Listeria monocytogenes in the food value chain. \nIn addition\, the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) participates as co-organiser of the event\, thanks to the collaboration of the Risk Assessment Area\, the Secretariat of the Scientific Committee and the National Food Centre (CNA). \nGO TO THE PROJECT PAGE

SUMMARY:Lightsheet microscopy: the fine art of slicing a sample without disturbing it
DESCRIPTION:Event on the Zeiss website \nRegister to attend online \nOn 12th June\, Wednesday\, at 10 am we will receive representatives of the ZEISS company at the Institute of Marine Research\, who will come to present the possibilities of the new fluorescence microscopy equipment at IIM-CSIC\, the Lighsheet LS7\, managed by our in-house Optical Microscopy and Image Analysis service. The equipment was acquired thanks to the support of the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI). \nThe presentation will be streamed online\, prior registration on the Zeiss website\, and in person in the IIM-CSIC Conference Hall (R/ Eduardo Cabello\, 6 – VIgo (Pontevedra). The session will be developed in Spanish. \n\nThe Lightsheet LS7\nThe Light Sheet Fluorescence Microscopy (LSFM) equipment is available for use by the entire scientific and technical community\, CSIC staff or not. \nThis type of microscopy is ideal for fast and smooth imaging of living organisms\, whole tissues and model cells as they develop over extended periods of time. In addition\, it allows obtaining complete images of large specimens\, optically clean and with subcellular resolution. Dedicated optics\, sample chambers and mounts allow adaptation to the refractive index of the chosen compensation method. \nImage analysis has become the bottleneck of many laboratories since innovative imaging technology enables generating of amazing 2D/3D/4D content at incredible speeds\, that generates large datasets. ZEISS arivis Pro is a modular image analysis software to work with multi-channel 2D\, 3D\, and 4D images of virtually unlimited size. DESCRIPTION:FOLLOW IT VIA STREAMING  \n(link available on the day of the broadcast) \nThe “Encontros Espresso” are a series of talks held at IIM-CSIC with the aim of helping us get to know each other better\, learn more about the activity carried out at our centre and explore the world of marine science\, encouraging scientific and technical discussion and strengthening links between groups. \nThese events are designed especially for our staff\, but everyone is invited to join through our streaming broadcast. \nThis new format will begin at 10:00 in the IIM-CSIC Assembly Hall\, and will include complimentary coffee (“Espresso”) to help communication flow smoothly. \nThis time we will meet our colleague Isabel Fuentes\, PhD in Statistics and Operations Research from the Organic Biogeochemistry Laboratory (IIM-CSIC). \nThe role of statistics in marine research\nThe Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) is a multidisciplinary centre where topics ranging from the physical and chemical characteristics of the ocean to the food it provides are studied\, with special attention to the impact of human activity on the oceans in the current context of climate change. \nFrom a statistical point of view\, working in a centre such as IIM means dealing with different types of data\, both in size and in “shape”. On the one hand\, we work with large high-resolution databases (Big Data) and small experimental datasets. On the other\, we deal with numerical and categorical variables\, circular data\, functional data\, compositional data\, spatio-temporal data\, point processes and more. The role of statistics in this complex ecosystem is to develop analysis and inference tools adapted to each type of data. This talk will present recent advances in statistical inference for complex data that can help extract as much information as possible from data that\, in most cases\, are very difficult to obtain and are fundamental for continuing to advance in different areas of marine research. \nIsabel Fuentes Santos\nShe holds a PhD in Statistics and Operations Research from the University of Santiago de Compostela since February 2016. Her main research line is non-parametric inference in the framework of spatial point processes\, in collaboration with the Modestya group at USC within projects of the State Research Agency. \nShe has been part of the Institute of Marine Research since 2010 as a member of the ESMABA groups and the Organic Biogeochemistry Laboratory. Her main functions are statistical analysis of oceanographic and mussel-aquaculture data\, development of statistical models\, application of new inference techniques to marine research and statistical support for colleagues in the group. She has participated in European projects focused on the impact of climate change on aquaculture (ClimeFISH) and on the assessment and promotion of ecosystem services from low-trophic aquaculture\, such as mussel aquaculture in Galicia (Aquavitae). She is currently part of PT5 of the Marine Sciences Programme of Galicia.

SUMMARY:IIM Encounters 2024 | 5th edition
DESCRIPTION:Here you can see all the works presented \nWhat are the Encounters?\nThe Encounters are an annual informal meeting\, and this will be the fifth edition. At this meeting\, all staff at the centre\, including research and technical staff\, trainees\, temporary staff and permanent staff\, can share what they do with the aim of getting to know each other better and gaining a clearer idea of IIM’s activity. This meeting encourages scientific and technical discussion and strengthens links between groups. \nThis year there will be 30 presentations. SUMMARY:IEV FORUM 2024: Vigo. Land and Sea.
DESCRIPTION:Within the 2024 FORUM lecture series of the Instituto de Estudios Vigueses\, presented on 15 February\, a highlighted talk will take place tomorrow by our colleague María Saura Álvarez\, researcher at the Aquatic Biotechnology Laboratory of IIM-CSIC. \nThe talk will address the role of modern aquaculture in the conservation of marine ecosystems and in the production of sustainable food for a growing world population. It will explain how genetic selection is producing species that are more resistant to disease and better adapted to the challenges of climate change\, positioning aquaculture as a key tool for environmental and food sustainability. \nThis is a unique opportunity to learn first-hand about scientific advances in aquaculture and the importance of marine research for the future of our planet. \nDo not miss this appointment with science and innovation in Vigo! \nMaría Saura Álvarez\nMaría Saura completed her doctoral thesis at the University of Vigo on Atlantic salmon conservation. She carried out her first postdoctoral work at ECIMAT\, analysing the mechanisms responsible for parallel evolution in gastropods. In 2012\, she received a Juan de la Cierva fellowship to join INIA-CSIC\, where she collaborated on several projects based on -omics tools in aquaculture and livestock\, including the European projects FISHBOOST and MedAID and the international 1000 Bull Genomes consortium. She completed postdoctoral stays at the Scottish Agricultural College (Edinburgh)\, The Roslin Institute (Edinburgh) and the Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Science (Sweden). She has participated in 17 research projects and served as principal investigator in two State R&D Plan projects and one CSIC project\, focused on optimising conservation and selection programmes in sheep and Atlantic salmon using -omics methodologies. She collaborates with the SCOURGE coalition (COVID-19 Fund) as head of a subproject on COVID resistance using genomic tools. She has taught at the University of Vigo and as associate professor at the Complutense University of Madrid. She has taught in the Master’s in Zoology (UCM)\, Genomic Methods in Breeding and Management of Aquatic Living Resources (Technical University of Denmark) and Applied Blue Biotechnology (Catholic University of Valencia). She participated in the organisation of the CSIC Training Plan 2022 and 2023 (Genomics applied to animal production\, metagenomic analysis and de novo assembly). She was deputy director of the Department of Genetic Improvement at INIA-CSIC (2020-23). She is a member of the Scientific Committee of ISAG (International Society for Animal Genetics) in the Aquaculture section (2019-present).

SUMMARY:G-NIGHT 2024 | Research in the Ría
DESCRIPTION:FULL G-NIGHT PROGRAMME IN VIGO \nThe CSIC Institute of Marine Research in Vigo joins G-NIGHT: Galician Researchers’ Night 2024 as a collaborating organisation\, with a free boat trip around the Vigo ría on the evening of next Friday. \nThe activity will take place aboard the Nautilus\, a boat run by the local company Ocean Secrets\, and will last approximately 1.5 hours. Audiences of all ages will be able to discover the marine diversity of the seabed of our ría thanks to the underwater robot carried by the boat\, which will show the seabeds of our rías from a unique perspective. \nIn addition\, several researchers from the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) will be present to talk about their research in the unique setting of the Vigo ría. DESCRIPTION:FOLLOW IT VIA STREAMING  \n(link available on the day of the broadcast) \nThe “Encontros Espresso” are a series of talks held at IIM-CSIC with the aim of helping us get to know each other better\, learn more about the activity carried out at our centre and explore the world of marine science\, encouraging scientific and technical discussion and strengthening links between groups. \nThese events are designed especially for our staff\, but everyone is invited to join through our streaming broadcast. \nThis new format will begin at 10:00 in the IIM-CSIC Assembly Hall\, and will include complimentary coffee (“Espresso”) to help communication flow smoothly. \nOn this occasion\, the seminar will be delivered by Sofía Consuegra\, ATRAE Distinguished Researcher in the Aquatic Biotechnology Group (ACUABIOTEC). \nSex\, epigenetics and videotapes: analysis of the adaptive role of epigenetic variability using inbred fish as a model\nEpigenetic variation represents a potential mechanism for generating adaptive responses in the presence of low genetic diversity\, and may be an alternative source of adaptive plastic phenotypes that can explain the persistence of highly inbred populations in variable environments. \nThe extent to which epigenetic modifications act independently of genomic variation is key to understanding their potential role in evolution\, and inbred organisms provide a unique opportunity to separate genetic and epigenetic variation. Fish of the genus Kryptolebias are ideal for these studies. Kryptolebias marmoratus and K. hermaphroditus are the only two known self-fertilising vertebrates and are naturally inbred. By analysing their genetic and epigenetic variation\, behaviour\, microbiome composition and response to parasite loads in the laboratory and in their natural environment\, evidence was found that DNA methylation patterns depend on the dynamic interaction between genotype and environment. \nHowever\, epigenetic parental effects related to environmental conditions were also identified. If maintained across generations\, they may represent an evolutionary strategy for species with low genetic diversity facing rapid environmental change.   \nSofía Consuegra\n Her work focuses mainly on conservation genetics\, molecular ecology and resource management (fisheries and aquaculture)\, primarily but not exclusively in aquatic organisms. \nShe graduated in Biology from the University of Oviedo and worked for six years as Scientific Adviser to the Government of Cantabria before completing a PhD in Conservation Genetics at the University of Cantabria. \nShe carried out postdoctoral work at the Institute of Zoology in London and at the University of St Andrews before becoming a lecturer at Aberystwyth University until 2013 and then Professor of Evolutionary Ecology at Swansea University. She is currently an ATRAE distinguished researcher at IIM.

DESCRIPTION: ATTEND VIA STREAMING  \n(link available on the day) \nThe “Encontros Espresso” (Espresso Get-Togethers) are a format of talks held at IIM with the aim of getting to know each other better\, getting to know better the activity that takes place in our center and exploring the world of marine science\, encouraging scientific-technical discussion and strengthening links between groups where both research and technical staff can participate to share their work\, experiences and results. \nThese are events designed specifically for our staff\, but everyone is welcome to join in via streaming. \nThis new format will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the IIM-CSIC Meeting Hall and will include complimentary coffee (“Espresso”) to encourage a smooth flow of communication. \nOn this occasion\, the seminar will be given by Robert Perryman\, postdoctoral researcher from the Integrated Marine Ecology Group (INMARE). \nRay Reunions and Social Skates:  Diving into the social lives of elasmobranchs- from Papua to Spain via Australia\nRob will be talking about his PhD research on ‘Social organisation\, social behaviour and collective movements in reef manta rays’ and his adventures collecting data in Raja Ampat\, West Papua\, an incredible area for marine biodiversity. He used a range of methods (including photo identification\, acoustic telemetry\, drone observations and social network analysis) to study manta ray behaviour. He was part of conservation projects to manage manta ray-human interactions in the region. Now in Vigo\, he will also talk about his new role in the BELAS project (Villegas-Rios) where he is studying the behaviour of skates (Raja undulata) at the spatial-social interface.  \nRobert Perryman\nRob is a postdoctoral researcher at IIM. His main research interests are in finding the links between spatial and social behaviour in elasmobranchs\, protecting the oceans\, and finding new methods to study the behaviour of marine megafauna. Rob has over 10 years experience in studying sharks and rays\, including 5 years in Raja Ampat\, Indonesia\, in collaboration with Marine Megafauna Foundation. He completed his PhD at Macquarie University in Sydney in 2021.

DESCRIPTION:Bookings and more information here \nOur colleagues Lucía and Lara\, from the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC)\, in collaboration with the Library of Galicia (Xunta de Galicia) and the CSIC Delegation in Galicia UCC\, are organising the workshop  “Now you see me: the magic of the microscopic world”. This activity is part of the Month of Science in Galician in Libraries and will take place next Saturday\, 9 November\, in Room I of the Library of Galicia at the Cidade da Cultura. \n\nParticipation in this activity is free\, but prior booking is required. Places are limited! \n\n Now you see me: the magic of the microscopic world \n?? Children aged 6 to 12. \nHow do we know the age of fish? How big is a squid when it is born? What is the most abundant animal in the ocean? How do bacteria grow? \nThrough this activity we will answer these questions in an enjoyable and fun way. We will use binocular magnifiers like those found in a laboratory and observe a wide variety of objects and organisms that are part of the research carried out at the CSIC Institute of Marine Research. \nThe workshop will begin with a short demonstration of how a binocular magnifier works. We will then move on to action\, directly observing the wonderful microscopic world through the magnifiers. We will have 10 scientific objects\, and the participating children\, through a small game and with the help of worksheets\, will try to guess what — or who — they have before their eyes. \nThe activity will end with a shared discussion of all the material observed and with alternative ideas for building your own magnifier at home!

SUMMARY:“Science with a snack” at the Calvario Market
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of World Aquaculture Day and within the CSIC Science and Technology Week\, on 30 November the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) is organising an activity open to the public at the Mercado do Calvario in Vigo. \nThe talk\, which will take place at 11:30\, will be given by María Saura\, a researcher specialising in genetics. During her presentation\, she will discuss the latest advances in modern aquaculture and its key role in the conservation of marine ecosystems and the production of sustainable food. \nAquaculture plays a key role in global food supply and environmental protection. Its practice is constantly evolving to adapt to environmental challenges and meet the growing needs of the global market. \nThe talk will explore topics such as the genetic improvement of aquatic species\, their adaptation to environmental changes and the sustainable methods used to ensure the quality of the products we consume. \nThe activity is open to the public and no prior booking is required. SUMMARY:5th General Assembly of the Marine Sciences Programme
DESCRIPTION:The Marine Sciences Programme of Galicia \nSantiago de Compostela\, 13 December 2024 – This Friday\, 13 December\, the Cidade da Cultura became the epicentre of marine research and innovation in Galicia. The event brought together around 200 participants\, including researchers and representatives of public administrations\, productive sectors and organisations from the marine world\, to assess progress and discuss the present and future challenges of science and research in these fields in Galicia. \nUnder the title “Progress in response to identified challenges and meeting with the marine sectors”\, the day was opened by Javier Alfonso Villares\, Regional Minister for the Sea of the Xunta de Galicia\, after a welcome to attendees by J. Francisco Saborido Rey\, scientific coordinator of the Programme and IIM-CSIC researcher. Conceived as a space for dialogue and collaboration around the needs and challenges of Galicia’s marine sector to which research can respond\, this Assembly highlighted progress in marine observation and monitoring\, sustainable aquaculture and social and economic transformation. Throughout the day\, experts offered lectures\, round tables and thematic panels in which the challenges and achievements reached so far by the participating entities were discussed. \nThe presentations highlighted advances in research on new observation platforms and technologies to obtain more and better data on the state of the marine environment\, the changes occurring in it and their impact. Advances in knowledge of the state of resources and technologies for improving aquaculture\, shellfishing and fisheries production were also addressed. The final session focused on the importance of connecting this research with socio-economic studies\, as well as its relevance for the development of the main public policies for the marine sectors.  \nSeveral innovative initiatives were presented\, including new integrated observation platforms\, progress in strategies and planning for the use of these tools\, a marine virtual laboratory and extreme-event simulators\, digitalisation in fisheries value chains\, the application of genomic tools to improve aquaculture and shellfishing production\, and progress in the sustainable management and supply of mollusc seed. In addition to technological innovations\, the Programme also presented advances in knowledge and socio-economic analysis techniques that will help to better understand the extent to which human activities are affected by environmental change. It also addressed how new regulatory instruments and public strategies — Blue Economy\, Climate Change and the Galician Coastal Planning and Integrated Management Act — can improve their effectiveness by making use of the full range of technologies and knowledge emerging from this Marine Sciences Programme. \nA commitment to innovation and sustainability\nThe meeting focused on three thematic blocks that reflected the importance of innovation in key areas such as marine observation and monitoring\, sustainable use of resources and the resilience of coastal ecosystems. \nThe first session addressed technological challenges towards integrated and sustainable marine observation. Progress on observation networks was presented\, highlighting developments such as new biogeochemical platforms\, the automation of ecotoxicological bioassays and the use of drones with artificial intelligence to monitor intertidal macroalgae. Innovative tools and services were also presented\, including a marine virtual laboratory and the development of digital twins. The needs of sectors related to fisheries\, renewable energies and sustainability were also analysed\, concluding with a debate on shared challenges and priorities. \nThe second part of the meeting addressed sustainable fisheries\, shellfishing and aquaculture\, with innovation as one of the fundamental pillars for ensuring the viability of the sector in the coming years. \nDifferent approaches and technologies for ensuring sustainability in fisheries were discussed\, including the use of genomics in resource management\, end-to-end models for key species\, digitalisation in the value chain and sustainability analysis from a socio-economic perspective. Innovative solutions were also presented\, such as the application of artificial intelligence to improve industrial processes. The session closed with a debate on these challenges and opportunities for fisheries sustainability. \nThe second round table presented advances in innovation to improve sustainability and efficiency in aquaculture. Topics included improving the health conditions of production\, new methodologies for assessing animal welfare\, innovation in sustainable feed\, genomic tools and systems for diversifying aquaculture production systems. Sector representatives also shared practical experiences on the transformation currently taking place in these areas. \nThe third round table focused on how to strengthen resilience in shellfishing and mussel farming. Tools were presented such as prediction systems for environmental alerts affecting culture conditions\, the production of disease-resistant seed\, cryopreservation of mollusc larvae and seed to reduce seasonality in production\, and models for assessing population parameters. The importance of sustainability in Galician mussel farming and shellfishing was also highlighted\, closing with a debate with the affected sectors on the solutions presented. \nKnowledge of coastal ecosystems and the future of the marine economy\nThe final session was dedicated to sustainable and resilient management of the marine environment and highlighted the role of the Marine Sciences Programme of Galicia in providing knowledge and information for informed decision-making\, the development of an effective regulatory framework and public strategies related to the marine environment. Essential issues were discussed\, such as integrated management of the Galician coast and the opportunities arising from new legislation\, as well as Galicia’s blue economy and climate change strategies. The session also addressed systems for quantifying and analysing the interrelationship of activities within the sea-industry complex in coastal areas\, integrated environmental indicators such as the Ocean Health Index\, the importance and mechanisms for estimating the value and balance of blue carbon and recreational services\, and the effects of climate change on the vulnerability of the fisheries and shellfishing sector. The session concluded by discussing the extent to which a truly comprehensive and integrated marine observation strategy is a key tool for understanding coastal and marine ecosystems and improving the management of human activities in relation to them. \nAcross the whole day\, the people responsible for moderating and guiding the presentations placed special emphasis on developing\, in parallel and as a complement to the research\, new strategies to achieve transformative knowledge transfer\, aimed primarily at improving the capacity of the system and of citizens to make greater and better use of scientific advances for the benefit of society as a whole. \nThe meeting served as a space for the research community of Galician public institutions\, the private sector and administration representatives to share their points of view and express their intention to maintain dialogue and expand opportunities for collaboration. All this was based on the shared understanding that such collaboration is essential to address common challenges related to the sustainability and management of marine resources. \nCollaboration between research entities and the business sector \nThe meeting\, organised by the Institute of Marine Research\, Spanish National Research Council (IIM-CSIC)\, the Marine Technology Centre\, CETMAR Foundation and the University of Vigo (UVigo)\, also included the participation of all institutions and research centres that form part of the Programme: the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC)\, the University of A Coruña (UdC)\, the Galician Supercomputing Centre (CESGA)\, the Technological Institute for the Control of the Marine Environment of Galicia (INTECMAR)\, Meteogalicia\, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC) and the centres belonging to the Regional Ministry of the Sea\, the Marine Research Centre (CIMA) and the Galician Institute for Aquaculture Training (IGAFA)\, together with companies and organisations promoting innovation in the marine sectors. \nThe Marine Sciences Programme of Galicia has a budget of 10 million euros and is funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation through the Recovery\, Transformation and Resilience Plan with Next Generation EU funds\, and by the European Maritime\, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund through the Regional Ministry of the Sea of the Xunta de Galicia. The Programme forms part of the national Complementary Marine Sciences Plan\, in which\, in addition to Galicia\, the Autonomous Communities of Murcia\, Andalusia\, Valencia\, Cantabria\, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands also participate. \nThe progress and results achieved in the Marine Sciences Programme of Galicia represent a step forward in improving research and innovation in the sector\, consolidating Galicia as a benchmark in marine sciences and strengthening its capacity to face the environmental\, social and economic challenges of the future.

SUMMARY:Eco-morphodynamics of coastal systems
DESCRIPTION: ATTEND VIA STREAMING  \n(link available on the day) \nThe “Encontros Espresso” (Espresso Get-Togethers) are a format of talks held at IIM with the aim of getting to know each other better\, getting to know better the activity that takes place in our center and exploring the world of marine science\, encouraging scientific-technical discussion and strengthening links between groups where both research and technical staff can participate to share their work\, experiences and results. \nThese are events designed specifically for our staff\, but everyone is welcome to join in via streaming. \nThis new format will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the IIM-CSIC Meeting Hall and will include complimentary coffee (“Espresso”) to encourage a smooth flow of communication. \nOn this occasion\, the seminar will be given by Ana Vila Concejo\, a Full Professor in Coastal Geomorphology at the University of Sydney\, with a distinguished career in research on coastal systems and eco-morphodynamics. \nEco-morphodynamics of coastal systems\n‘Eco-morphodynamics’ arises when studying coastal systems where certain species may dominate some of the feedbacks between hydrodynamics and morphological responses. Most eco-morphodynamic studies focus on coral reefs\, but they also include oyster reefs\, saltmarshes and mangroves\, and even seagrasses. \nCoral reefs provide significant ecosystem services including food security and coastal protection to people and property\, aside from representing a major tourist attraction. Corals around the world are irreversibly transforming due to unprecedented rapid environmental change. \nThis multi-disciplinary presentation focuses on recent advances in understanding how coral reefs interact with waves and sediments under climate change. The last part of the presentation includes some recent research on how we apply eco-morphodynamics to ecosystem restoration using examples of oyster reefs and Posidonia in Australia. \nAna Vila Concejo\nGraduated in Marine Geoscience from the University of Vigo (Spain)\, where she completed an MSc on urban estuarine beaches. In 2004\, she completed her PhD at the University of Algarve (Portugal). She moved to Australia in 2005 and has been working at the University of Sydney since 2007\, where she has consolidated a successful career in Coastal Geomorphology\, becoming a Full Professor in 2023. Her research has mostly focused on tidal inlets\, beaches in estuaries and bays (BEBs)\, and coral reefs. Her research on eco-morphodynamics includes coral reefs\, oyster reefs\, and other ecosystems contributing to Nature-Based Solutions. She has published over 100 contributions to the literature and has an extensive international network of collaborators. \nAt the University of Sydney\, she co-leads the Geocoastal Research Group\, and she is also Deputy Head of the School of Geosciences\, Co-Director of the Marine Studies Institute\, and Deputy Director of One Tree Island Research Station on the Great Barrier Reef. She is part of the Science Advisory Committee of the Sydney Institute of Marine Science\, and between 2020 and 2024\, she was a member of the Australian Research Council (ARC) College of Experts. \nIn 2016\, she co-founded the international network for Women in Coastal Geoscience and Engineering (WICGE)\, which she co-chaired until 2023. WICGE now has over 600 members globally\, and she is part of the Advisory Committee. She is also the co-host of the successful podcast Coast2Cast\, where she interviews coastal scientists and engineers from all over the world.

DESCRIPTION:After the welcome and presentation of the work carried out at the IIM-CSIC by the centre’s Engagement with the Public Unit\, the students had the opportunity to visit our Aquarium Service. \nOn this occasion\, the Immunology and Genomics group\, represented by Raquel Aranguren and Alejandro Romero\, showcased the work of their research team. \nThey also spent time with the SEMAIM: Optical Microscopy and Image Analysis service\, where our colleague Laura Gómez Montoto demonstrated various technologies\, including the LightSheet microscope. \nThank you very much for visiting!

This continuation of its Pedagogical Mission aims to reach more than 300 children. The programme focuses not only on large urban schools\, but also on schools in the metropolitan area and rural districts\, where outreach activities are limited or non-existent. \nWith this initiative\, rooted in the centre’s outreach tradition\, the IIM aims not only to share knowledge and inspire Galician children\, but also to highlight the role of the women who work every day for marine science alongside the Institute.

SUMMARY:IIM-CSIC organises the CSIC Marine Research Meeting in Vigo as part of its 75th anniversary
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) is organising the CSIC Marine Research Meeting: Towards a more connected\, collaborative and strategic marine science on 27 and 28 May 2026 in Vigo\, as part of the commemoration of its 75th anniversary (1951–2026). \nThe aim of this event is to bring together research staff working in the marine field to encourage knowledge exchange\, promote scientific innovation and highlight the role of marine ecosystems as a key axis for sustainable development\, especially in a city such as Vigo\, which is deeply linked to the sea. \nThe opening session will take place on Wednesday 27 May at 9:30 in the Afundación Auditorium and will be attended by Abel Caballero\, mayor of Vigo; José María Martell\, CSIC Vice-President for Scientific and Technical Research; Carlos Closa\, CSIC Vice-President for Organisation and Institutional Relations; Carmen González Sotelo\, CSIC institutional delegate in Galicia; together with Beatriz Novoa\, director of IIM-CSIC\, the institute organising the meeting\, reinforcing its institutional nature and bringing together the CSIC marine science community. \nThe programme is structured into three major thematic blocks that address\, from an integrative perspective\, the main challenges facing current marine research: \nWednesday 27 May\nThe ocean in motion: understanding the system that regulates the planetThis block focuses on the study of the ocean as a global system\, addressing physical\, chemical and biogeochemical processes and their role in global change. From observation and modelling to data integration\, it will explore the scientific foundations needed to understand and predict the evolution of the marine environment. \nLife in the sea: biodiversity\, ecosystems and ocean resilienceDedicated to the study of marine biodiversity and ecosystem functioning\, this block addresses everything from microorganisms to complex systems\, including the impacts of global change\, conservation and resilience. It is a key space for advancing the scientific knowledge that underpins the protection of marine life. \nThursday 28 May\nOcean and society: science for the sustainable use of the seaThis block focuses on the relationship between the ocean and society\, addressing the sustainable management of marine resources\, aquaculture\, fisheries and the blue economy. It also highlights the role of knowledge transfer and scientific advice in the design of public policies and the generation of solutions to global challenges. \nBeyond the scientific sessions\, the meeting is conceived as a space to strengthen collaboration between centres\, disciplines and generations\, promoting synergies\, the exchange of capacities and the construction of joint projects that foster more coordinated and strategic science. \n  \nThe choice of Vigo as the venue reinforces its role as one of Europe’s leading hubs for marine research\, where science\, industry and society converge in a dynamic ecosystem linked to the blue economy. \nA meeting that places marine science as a pillar for sustainability\, innovation and social development\, strengthening collaboration and knowledge transfer as drivers of the future.

SUMMARY:Scientific workshops\, experimentation and the ocean: IIM-CSIC celebrates its 75th anniversary with a marine science day open to the public
DESCRIPTION:On 12 June\, the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) will hold a special day of scientific activities as part of the commemoration of its 75th anniversary (1951-2026). The initiative will bring together students from several schools during the morning and will open its doors to the public in the afternoon to bring marine research closer through participatory workshops\, experiments and experiences designed to discover the ocean through science. \n\n\n\nThe activity will take place between 10:00 and 20:00 at the Alameda de Eduardo Cabello\, opposite IIM-CSIC\, and will offer a close look at some of the research carried out at the centre to understand\, conserve and sustainably use marine ecosystems and resources.

SUMMARY:International Conference Lipids in the Ocean 2026
DESCRIPTION:Vigo will host the international conference Lipids in the Ocean 2026 from 15 to 17 June\, a scientific meeting that will bring together more than 120 specialists from around the world to analyse the latest advances in the study of marine lipids and their applications in fields such as health\, nutrition\, aquaculture and biotechnology. \nThe conference is organised by the CSIC\, through the Marine Products Chemistry Group of the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) and the Sustainable Marine Aquaculture and Biotechnology group of IEO-CSIC. \nThe institutional opening will take place on Sunday\, 14 June\, at 19:30\, at the Attica 21 Vigo Business & Wellness\, with the participation of institutional representatives from Vigo City Council\, CSIC and the conference organising committee. \nOver three days\, the meeting will include plenary lectures\, scientific sessions and presentations by researchers from Europe\, America\, Asia and Oceania. The programme will address topics such as marine lipidomics\, bioactive compounds from marine organisms\, the role of lipids in aquatic ecosystems\, their relevance in nutrition and health\, and their potential for the development of sustainable biotechnological solutions. \nThe event will also strengthen Vigo’s position as an international hub for marine science and highlight the role of Galician research in the advancement of knowledge about the ocean and its resources.
