SUMMARY:Syngnathids Challenge: sightings of seahorses and pipefish
DESCRIPTION:On 8 May\, at 19:00\, an open online information session will take place via Zoom to present the Syngnathids Challenge\, which seeks citizen collaboration in reporting sightings of seahorses and pipefish in order to complete the Atlas of Syngnathids of the Spanish Coast. \nSeahorses (Hippocampus spp.) are protected species included in Spain’s List of Wild Species under Special Protection. The information available on the status of wild populations of these species is very limited\, so it is necessary to collect\, analyse and assess the available information and expand knowledge about them. \nFor this reason\, the HippoDEC project team\, led by the Marine Ecology and Resources Department at IIM-CSIC\, and Observadores del Mar are launching the Syngnathids Challenge. The Hippo-DEC project will make it possible to compile\, analyse and assess vital information for the conservation of these species\, as well as to propose protection measures and critical areas requiring special attention. \nThis initiative represents a significant step towards protecting and preserving seahorses on the Spanish coast\, demonstrating the joint commitment of the scientific community and society to the conservation of marine biodiversity. \nThe project involves collaboration with Observadores del Mar\, Fundación Aula do Mar do Mediterráneo\, NGO Oceánidas\, Fundación Oceanográfic de Valencia\, NGO Ambiens\, Palma Aquarium\, Acuario Gijón and the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia. In addition\, the research is funded by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge under the DGBBD-OAPN-FB-CSIC General Action Protocol on natural heritage\, biodiversity\, forestry and adaptation to global change\, with the aim of identifying priority conservation areas and proposing action measures.

SUMMARY:Madagascar biodiversity and opportunities for marine research
DESCRIPTION:Next Thursday\, 25th April\, IIM-CSIC will host the seminar: “Madagascar biodiversity and opportunities for marine research” by Dr Fanomezana Ratsoavina from the Université d’Antananarivo\, in Madagascar. \nThe part of its joint visit to our country\, both Dr Ratsoavina and her colleague\, Dr Zafimaheri Rakotomalala\, will share the reality of Malagasy research and the opportunities that the island gathers for new research and innovation ventures\, both terrestrial and marine. \n\nMadagascar biodiversity and opportunities for marine research\nMadagascar is in the top 10 of biodiversity hotspots worldwide. Despite the intensive research on the terrestrial realm\, we know little about this biodiversity. Research on the marine environment is scarce in comparison. I will provide an overview of the rich biodiversity found in Madagascar the well the various challenges and dangers that threaten its sustainability. Furthermore\, I will cover several subjects that attract the attention of both national and international researchers. I will also talk about potential new frontiers and promising prospects in the realm of marine sciences and research to broaden the scope of exploration and investigation in this unithat island. \nDr Fanomezana Ratsoavina\nDr Fanomezana Ratsoavina is ‘Maitre of Conferences’ and the Direct for the Mention of Zoologie et Biodiversité Animale (Mention of Zoology and Animal Biodiversity) at the University of Antananarivo. Her work is focused on the Malagasy biodiversity\, taxonomy phylogenetics and conservation.  \n\nThis event has been organised by the Integrated Marine Ecology (INMARE) research group of the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC). SUMMARY:Marine Sciences Programme | PT7 follow-up meeting
DESCRIPTION:PCCMMG website \nOn Thursday 18 April\, the follow-up meeting for PT7 within the Marine Sciences Programme of Galicia (PCCMMG) will take place at CETMAR. The coordination team will include Jose Manuel Fernández Babarro\, EsMaBa (IIM-CSIC)\, and Antonio Villalba García\, CIMA-Corón (CIMA) (PTE). \nDeveloping tools to improve sustainable shellfish production (PT7)\nShellfishing and bivalve-mollusc aquaculture in Galicia are interdependent\, and the sustainability and improvement of bivalve production require coordinated actions in both areas. Aquaculture and shellfishing rely on sedentary benthic resources with complex life cycles and spatial structures\, which makes these key sectors of Galicia’s marine economy highly variable and still difficult to predict. This is especially true of spatial and temporal variability in recruitment\, which determines seed availability for grow-out in shellfish beds and farming facilities\, and for restocking natural beds. The overall aim of this work package is to provide procedures and tools to guarantee a sustainable supply of seed and strengthen bivalve aquaculture within the sustainable exploitation of Galicia’s natural resources\, addressing both recruitment in the natural environment (Action 1) and hatchery production (Action 2). Work will focus on three priority species: mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis\, grooved carpet shell Ruditapes decussatus and pullet carpet shell Venerupis corrugata. The results will serve as a reference for future protocols applicable to other species. \n\nAction 1. The objective is to create site-specific tools to effectively manage the natural supply of bivalve seed. Current stock monitoring networks will be assessed and improved where necessary\, and new methodologies will be developed to evaluate key demographic parameters such as larval abundance and reproductive capacity. Emerging techniques such as natural trace-element marking and numerical modelling will be used to create connectivity matrices and identify key source-sink populations under different climate scenarios. This information will feed into a metapopulation model to predict larval dispersal and population dynamics\, and will be integrated into an open Geographic Information System for decision-making in resource management. \nAction 2. The objective is to optimise hatchery seed-production protocols for grooved carpet shell and pullet carpet shell\, ensuring the supply of high-quality seed for grow-out and strengthening the resilience of exploited shellfish beds. Planned tasks include reliable broodstock conditioning protocols\, spawning induction and cryopreservation of gametes and larvae; optimisation of larval and post-larval culture systems\, diets and survival procedures; and detailed study of microbiota and associated pathogens through metagenomics and metatranscriptomics. SUMMARY:Sea and Past: Accessible Heritage
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) will begin tomorrow “Sea and Past”\, a series of interactive workshops specifically designed for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias across Galicia\, as part of the “Accessible Heritage” initiative. \nThere will be four workshops\, with small audiences and content adapted to the target public\, focusing on the biodiversity and ecology of bivalve molluscs and traditional technologies for their exploitation\, such as shellfishing and mussel rafts. Participants will connect with memories from the past and receive sensory stimulation\, reinforced through traditional sea songs that will guide the sessions. \nThe workshops were developed in close collaboration with AFAMO\, the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s Patients of O Morrazo\, and Fundación Legar\, dedicated to recovering and disseminating Galicia’s musical cultural heritage. \nThe main objective is to establish a link between participants and their memories through sensory\, emotional and cognitive activities. Tactile materials and traditional sea songs will be used to create an experience combining scientific knowledge with emotional connection. \nIn addition to improving understanding of marine biodiversity and Galician cultural traditions\, the workshops seek to provide an inclusive and supportive environment for older people and those facing cognitive diseases. \nWorking closely with specialised associations and paying individual attention to participants’ needs\, we aim to create an environment of care\, respect and affection in each workshop. \nThis project is a joint initiative of the CSIC Scientific Culture Unit in Galicia (Institutional Delegation)\, the Institute of Heritage Sciences (INCIPIT\, Santiago de Compostela) through its Valorisation Unit\, and the Institute of Marine Research (IIM\, Vigo) through its Scientific Culture Unit. \nThe workshops will take place on 14 May in Cee\, 20 May in Moaña\, 10 June in Burela and 12 June in Ribeira. \nProject data\nThis project is funded by FECYT – Ministry of Science\, Innovation and Universities. DESCRIPTION:It was a pleasure to welcome the Higher-Level Training Cycle in Pathological Anatomy and Cytodiagnosis from Colexio Lar to our facilities at the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC). DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATIONs \nNext 28 of February will take place the Presentation of the Project “Hippo-DEC: Diagnóstico of the estado of conservación of seahorses of sea in the litoral Spanish\, áreas críticas and medidas of conservación” in the Auditorium of the Cambón\, venue of the Parthat National Marítimo-Terrestre of the Illas Atlantic of Galicia\, situado in Vigo. \nThis Project\, liderado by the researcheres Miquel Planas and Jorge Urcera of the group of Ecoloxía of Marine resources of IIM-CSIC\, ten comThe aim main evaluate the situación current of the poboacións salvaxes of seahorses of sea\, species vulnerables incluídas in the Listado of Species Silvestres in Réxime of Protección Especial from 2011. “THE Project Hippo-DEC permitirá recompilar\, analyse and evaluate information vital for the conservación destas species\, así the propoñer medidas of protección and áreas críticas that requiren atención especial. \nEstThe initiative representa the progress significativo towards to the protección and preservación of the seahorses of sea in the litoral Spanish\, demostrando the compromiso conxunto of the community scientific and the society in the conservación of the biodiversity marine. \nTHE Project conta with the collaboration of Observadores of the Sea\, Fundación Classroom of the Sea of the Mediterráneo\, ONG Oceánidas\, Fundación Oceanográfic of Valencia\, ONG Ambiens\, Palma Aquarium\, Acuario Gijón and Parthat National Marítimo-Terrestre of the Illas Atlantic of Galicia. SUMMARY:Sclerochronology research in the Adriatic Sea – what can we learn from bivalve shells?
DESCRIPTION:Melita Peharda\, is the Senior Scientist at the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (Split\, Croatia) who will be visiting IIM-CSIC next week. Her research is in the field of marine ecology and is mostly related to bivalve ecology and sclerochronology\, including analysis of tissue\, shell growth increment structures and shell geochemistry. By analysing the physical and chemical variations in the accretionary hard tissues of organisms\, the lot of information can be obtained with applications for the management and conservation of commercially important and protected bivalve species. \nMelita will explain us about her research in the Adriatic sea and introduce shortly the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries\, which was the first national scientific institution dedicated to marine research in Croatia\, with the lot of similarities with our IIM-CSIC because of their large multidisciplinary approach\, encompassing biological\, chemical\, and physical oceanography the well the sedimentology\, fishery\, and mariculture. \nAre you all invited to meet her next Monday\, October 9th at 13:30 at IIM-CSIC’s Conference Hall.

DESCRIPTION:No IIM-CSIC estamos comprometidos coa implicación da societye na marine research\, polo que o primeiro que queremos facer antes de mudar a nosa sede ao barrio de Teis é presentarnos ante a veciñanza e compartir con eles a obra arquitectónica que forseaá parte da súa paisaxe nos próximos anos\, nun evento de balde e aberto ao público xeral. \nAsí\, presentaremos ante o noso novo barrio os 38 projects arquitectónicos presentados a un concurso público para construir a nosa nova sede\, incluído o project gañador. Unha primeira pedra para poñer a Ríos\, a Teis e á cidade de Vigo no epicentro da marine research a nivel local e global\, dentro do project do Campus Científico-Tecnolóxico do Mar. \nEste evento ten como obxectivo convidar ao público e\, especialmente\, á veciñanza dos arredores a coñecer o project. A exposición poderá visitarse o 27 de xullo\, de 16:00 a 19:00 horas\, e o 28 de xullo\, de 11:00 a 14:00 horas. O persoal do IIM-CSIC estará presente para guiar ao público pola exposición. DESCRIPTION:SÍGUEO POR STREAMING  \n(enlace dispoñible no día da transmisión) \nFinanciado por Red LifeHUB.CSIC (PIE-202120E047-Conexiones Life). \nOs “Encontros Espresso” son un formato de talks que se veñen realizando no IIM-CSIC co obxectivo de coñecernos mellor entre nós\,coñecer mellor a actividade que se realiza no noso centro e explorar o mundo da science marine\, fomentando a discusión científico-técnica e reforzando vínculos entre grupos onde pode participar tanto o persoal investigador como técnico para compartir o seu traballo\, experiencias e resultados. \nSon eventos pensados especialmente para o noso persoal\, pero todo o mundo está convidado a unirse a través da nosa emisión por streaming. \nEste novo formato celebrarase cada dúas semanas\, ás 10:00 horas no Salón de Actos do  IIM-CSIC irán acompañados con café de cortesía (“Espresso”) para favorecer o bo fluír da comunicación. \nDesta vez encontrámonos coa nosa compañeira\, Esmeralda Broullón\, procedente do Grupo de Estudios Americanos da Escuela de Estudios Hispano-Americanos / Instituto de Historia (EEHA/IH-CSIC) \, que coa súa intervención pecha esta 1ª tempada dos Encontros Espresso! \nMalvinas/Falkland and aguas internacionales en diálogo transdisciplinar. Un enfoque etnohistórico de las pesquerías españolas en época contemporánea.\nEsta presentation exporá os resultados dunha primeira exploración transdisciplinar acerca das pesqueiras e a frota de gran altura no Atlántico Sudoccidental (ATSW). Desde un enfoque etnohistórico de partida\, ten como finalidade transferir unha cosmovisión e achegar o estado da cuestión acerca destas en época actual. \nAtenderase ao seu desenvolvemento no pasado recente\, en canto actividade extractiva de recursos naturais nun territorio de fronteiras concibido como espazo xeográfico e fenómeno socio-político. Por esta razón\, seleccionáronse as coordenadas xeopolíticas de Malvinas/Falkland e augas internacionais\, correspondentes ás sub-áreas de zona de fishing 41.3.1 e 41.3.2 de FAO. \nO obxectivo principal é explorar un específico modo de vida extraterritorial baixo a singradura de dous continentes (Europa-América) nun diálogo transdisciplinar. Posto que o desenvolvemento científico-tecnolóxico\, os recursos naturais e as forzas de traballo a bordo son tres dos piares esenciais no acceso aos seaes e unha recursos caracterizados\, do mesmo xeito que a tripulación\, pola súa itinerancia. Sen obviar a “nacionalización” das augas emprendidas a finais dos anos setenta do pasado século XX. \nEn canto a hipótese de partida sostense\, de maneira correlativa\, que a singularidade fronteiriza e inter-rexional dunhas augas carentes dun organismo internacional regulador (ORP)\, xunto á división internacional do traballo e intersección de seacadores étnicos e de xénero\, introducidos no novo século\, regulan a estrutura social e o imaxinario cultural das xentes que faenan sea atdentro. Uns actores ‘internados’\, é dicir\, asistidos por un exacerbado illamento territorial e un renovado espazo segregacional no sea e en terra. Homes a bordo de distintas nacionalidades xunto a unha desnivelada inserción feminina. Dito doutra maneira\, actores inmersos no industrializado proceso de captura de arrastre e elaboración do peixe\, pero re-conceptualizado baixo a categoría de «salvaxe». En definitiva\, unha xerárquica colectividade subsumida nunhas globalizadas cadeas de renovados consumos baixo o paradigma dun novo sistema alimentario. \nEsmeralda Broullón \nLicenciada en Antropoloxía e doutora en Historia. A súa área de especialización vira ao redor dos estudos sobre a cultura en articulación con tres eixos: poboación\, narrativas diaspóricas e imaxinarios políticos transculturales. Na actualidade é Científica Titular da EEHA/IH-CSIC. Foi researcher posdoctoral no CCHS-CSIC\, Madrid (JAE-doc); researcher Ramón and Cajal na Universidade de Sevilla; docente universitaria (TU/Aneca\, 2016) e asesora técnica na Consellería de Equality (Xunta de Andalucía). \nAo longo da súa carreira\, realizou estudos de campo entre societyes seaítimo-pesqueiras do ámbito iberoamericano e prestado especial atención aos movementos sociais femininos\, entre estes «Rosa dos Ventos» (Vigo). É integrante da Rede Iberoamericana de Research en Comunidades Marítimas (RiCoMa)\, coordinada pola Universidade do Mar da Prata e a Universidade de Barcelona. \nOs resultados da súa research foron transferidos en revistas indexadas e monografías colectivas\, entre as que destacan: «Inclusión social and visibilidad del rol femenino en las societyes seaítimas». En Igual\, D. e González Guardiola\, M. D.\, El sea vivido: Perfiles sociales de las gentes de sea en larga duración (siglos XV-XXI)\, UClM\, 2020; «Politics\, ideology and culture of the Andalusians in the Southern Cone of America: between Hispanic essentiality and self-identity»\, JILAR\, 24/3\, 2019; «Más allá del Gran Sol: O itinerario transoceánico das pesqueiras Galicians desde una perspectiva dos Estudos Culturais (1945–1955)»\, Galicia 21\, Bangor University and University College Cork\, 2018. \nCoordinou e editou o dossier\, «Género\, science and knowledge»\, Revista Internacional de Filosofía Daimon\, Sup. 6\, 2017 e Intrépidas. Entre Europa and the ‘Américas’: cultura\, arte and política en equidad\, Madrid\, Praza e Valdés\, 2022. \nNo periodo entre xuño e xullo do 2023 realiza unha estancia de research interdisciplinar no IIM-CSIC sobre o ‘mundo’ das pesqueiras e a frota de orixe española no Atlántico Sudoccidental: Malvinas e augas Internacionais en época contemporánea. SUMMARY:50 years with our people\, 50 years of our history
DESCRIPTION: The Institute of Marine Research will pay tribute to the people who shaped its history on 30 June at 12:00\, in an internal event held at the centre. \nThe event is part of the commemoration of 50 years of IIM in Bouzas and is a tribute dedicated to all the colleagues who have left their mark on the centre’s history over all these years. \nDuring the event\, a round table will be held in which several colleagues will share their experiences. Afterwards\, we will close the celebration with snacks and lunch on the centre’s terrace. \nThis is a wonderful opportunity to ask questions\, talk and understand where much of what we experience today comes from\, both as part of science and as part of IIM\, and to gather strength and ideas for the future. \nA special day to remember and value together the achievements and contributions of the people who have passed through our corridors\, laboratories and offices.

SUMMARY:The Persistence of Memory: Behavioral Analysis and Arm Usage of a 9-Armed Octopus vulgaris named Salvador
DESCRIPTION: ATTEND VIA STREAMING  \n(link available on the day) \nThe “Encontros Espresso” (Espresso Get-Togethers) are a format of talks held at IIM with the aim of getting to know each other better\, getting to know better the activity that takes place in our center and exploring the world of marine science\, encouraging scientific-technical discussion and strengthening links between groups where both research and technical staff can participate to share their work\, experiences and results. \nThese are events designed specifically for our staff\, but everyone is welcome to join in via streaming. \nThis new format will be held monthly\, at 10:00 a.m. in the IIM-CSIC Meeting Room and include complimentary coffee (“Espresso”) to promote the smooth flow of communication . \nThe Persistence of Memory: Behavioral Analysis and Arm Usage of a 9-Armed Octopus Vulgaris named Salvador\nThe current study presents the very first recordings of any living Cephalopod with a fully functional bifurcated arm. To gain insight to the behavioral repertoire and examine patterns of arm usage in the subject\, an Octopus vulgaris with branched R1 arm\, over 4 months of video footage was quantified using the behavior recording software BORIS. This produced a data frame made up of 6442 events of arm usage within behaviors\, which was later transformed into a binomial response matrix of arm usage. When examined within behavioral categories; posterior arms were highly associated to Locomotion behaviors\, while anterior arms were more associated to Foraging\, Feeding\, and Exploratory Behaviors. The anterior arms’ association with prey accumulation was weaker than previously described in 8-armed individuals due to compensation by the right-side posterior arms. In earlier videos\, the bifurcated arms were used more frequently for actions underneath the body\, but this specialization decreased as videos progressed and arms grew\, possibly due to the smaller size of the bifurcated arms. Bifurcated and regrown arms were more often used in safe behaviors and less in risky behaviors. These results demonstrate that task distribution and functionality among arms may have a decisional or cognitive basis rather than serving as a byproduct of arm mechanics and further allude to the existence of higher cognitive capabilities such as post-traumatic associated memory\, and learning.\n  \nSamuel Ellington Soule\nSamuel Ellington Soule is a cephalopod-obsessed marine biologist who was born in Singapore\, but moved to Brooklyn\, New York where his whole family lives. He completed his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Marine Biology and Art History at Occidental College in Los Angeles California. After graduating\, he stayed in Los Angeles to work in two different marine laboratories. At the Southern California Marine Institute\, he spent time as a technician\, where he collected marine samples\, managed aquarium systems\, and educated students about marine species. He also worked as a Field and Laboratory Research Assistant at the Vantuna Research Group\, working on various projects related to California’s Kelp Forest Ecosystem\, and helping install and plan the largest rocky reef restoration project in southern California. Sam is also a PADI and American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) scuba diving instructor\, having spent 4 years working in Saint Martin leading recreational SCUBA courses and teaching marine biology curricula to students\, and 2 years in Los Angeles teaching scientific diving courses to fellow researchers. \nHere in Vigo Sam\, spent a short time at ECIMAT in Toralla Island researching the degradation and toxicity of plastic biopolymers with Ricardo Berias. Here at the IIM\, Sam was working alongside Jorge Hernández-Urcera to complete his Master of Science (MSc) degree through International Master in Marine Biological Resources (IMBRSea) on Cephalopod life history and behavior.\n

O crecente interese no cultivo desta especie puxo de manifesto a necesidade do desenvolvemento e a implementación de boas prácticas de produción que sexan compatibles co animal welfare. A avaliación do benestar a miúdo realízase mediante indicadores que son susceptibles de nesgos ao depender da interpretación subxectiva da persoa que os está a avaliar\, o que subliña a necesidade de buscar novos bioseacadores cuantificables e obxectivos que permitan unha avaliación máis precisa e eficaz. Neste contexto\, traballos recentes sinalaron o papel do microbioma asociado aos animais de produción como un bioseacador indicativo das condicións de benestar e saúde. Neste seminar presentarase un estudo no que se utilizou un enfoque metaxenómico para caracterizar\, por primeira vez\, as comunidades microbianas asociadas ao mucus da pel de octopuss adultos tanto de vida salvaxe como domesticados. O obxectivo da nosa research é determinar se as condicións de cultivo alteran o microbioma e\, en consecuencia\, o benestar destes animais. Os resultados obtidos permitirán coñecer a composición da microbiota principal presente na pel desta especie e a súa potencial aplicación como bioseacador de animal welfare. \nDaniel Costas Imbernón\nDaniel Costas é licenciado en Bioloxía pola USC e Máster en Xenómica e Xenética pola UVigo.  Actualmente desenvolve a súa tese doutoral no Laboratorio de Biotecnoloxía Acuática\, centrando os seus estudos na aplicación de tecnoloxías ómicas e a bioinformática na acuicultura\, baixo a supervisión dos investigadores Maria Saura e Pep Rotllant.
