Tickets for the drink will be given on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nMAP ON GOOGLE MAPS \n\nAction 2: Science Lanterns \n \nOnce again\, IIM recovers the “Science Lanterns” initiative after the success achieved with last year’s article. \nPhD candidate Clara Mendoza\, in collaboration with the centre’s communications manager\, Jaime Amaro Blanco\, lends her voice to a profile piece exploring the biography of an outstanding female scientist whose merits were poorly recognised throughout history: Maria Wonenburger. \nClara\, a woman now beginning her scientific career at IIM-CSIC\, tells us about this mathematician from A Coruña\, a benchmark for her own career and her path towards a PhD. \nThis will be the 2nd edition of the “Science Lanterns” campaign\, whose first edition was published on 11 February 2022 in Faro de Vigo\, written by Marta López Mozos and starring Eunice N. Foote\, a pioneer of the climate crisis. \nThe piece will be published on 11 February and will be openly accessible on the IIM-CSIC website. The publication will once again combine science and art through the illustrations of artist Laura Romero (@laurandcolours). \n\nAction 3: Women of Science in Your Neighbourhood\n \nMarine research takes to the streets of Vigo through the image of real women who work for science every day at the CSIC Institute of Marine Research. The “Women of Science in Your Neighbourhood” initiative\, an adaptation of the award-winning original idea from the University of Zaragoza\, will fill bus shelters across the city with photographs of these workers. Each image also includes a sentence in which the protagonist shares something about her hobbies\, tastes and interests beyond science. \nThe event consists of an exhibition of 12 photographs of researchers\, predoctoral researchers and technicians from IIM-CSIC on up to 30 billboards and bus shelters provided in collaboration with Vigo City Council. Each display includes a quote about the protagonist’s work in science and a hobby or interest from her personal life. The installation began on 6 February and will remain on the streets until 27 February. \nThe initiative seeks to break stereotypes and reinforce the idea that science is close and accessible\, and that the women who work in it are citizens with hobbies\, friends\, family and diverse interests like anyone else.

Illustraciencia is an initiative with more than a decade of experience promoting and rewarding natural and scientific illustration. \nThe presentation will take place at the headquarters of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra in Vigo and will feature: \n\nXosé Pintado Valverde – Deputy Director for Scientific Culture at IIM-CSIC\nSara Carrasco – illustrator at 13GRADOS\nMiquel Baidal\, Fernando Correia and Clara Cerviño – coordinating team of the Manual\n\nMore dates in Galicia\nThe event is part of the Manual presentation tour\, which previously visited Madrid and Barcelona and will continue with two events in Galicia: \n\n13 December\, in A Coruña\, at Libraría Berbiriana.\n14 December\, in Santiago de Compostela\, at the USC Natural History Museum.\n\nA manual for getting started in scientific illustration\nWith Illustraciencia’s Scientific Illustration Manual you will discover what the work of a scientific illustrator involves\, learn the most common techniques in this discipline and receive advice from professionals on illustrating different biological groups\, from botany and zoology to molecular\, medical\, archaeological and palaeontological illustration. The book includes practical exercises and questions related to the most important aspects to consider when approaching a project. \nYou will discover that scientific illustration is essential for communicating knowledge\, as it is an ideal discipline for conveying the results of research and scientific projects rigorously and truthfully. Its contents arise from the authors’ accumulated experience in scientific illustration training and aim to help anyone who wishes to enter a profession in which art and science come together. At the same time\, the book awakens interest in science and nature through more than 300 illustrations contributed by the Illustraciencia community. \nIllustraciencia is a project created in 2009 to promote scientific and natural illustration. It carries out numerous activities\, including the International Scientific and Naturalist Illustration Award\, the Online Scientific Illustration Congress and specialised academic training. \nClara Cerviño\, Miquel Baidal and Fernando Correia coordinate the production of this manual\, which could not have been created without the involvement and collaboration of Illustraciencia Academy teachers\, students\, participants in the scientific illustration competition and the wider Illustraciencia community. SUMMARY:2nd International Meeting on Knowledge and the Blue Economy
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION \nFULL PROGRAMME \n  \nThree representatives of the IIM-CSIC Innovation and Scientific Culture area will be present from 29 November to 2 December in Cádiz at the 2nd International Meeting on Knowledge and the Blue Economy. \nThis event is aimed at companies\, institutions\, research centres and universities related to strategic sectors linked to the Blue Economy. Its goal is to facilitate collaboration to promote innovation and help build a modern\, sustainable and competitive economy. In addition to an attractive programme of talks and round tables\, it includes an exhibition area with more than 60 booths from companies and public and private entities\, and a hundred tables for scheduled bilateral meetings. \nThis second edition of InnovAzul is organised by the University of Cádiz together with institutions and companies associated with the International Campus of Excellence – CEIMAR\, the European University of the Seas (SEA-EU)\, and with the support of the Regional Government of Andalusia\, Cádiz City Council and other administrations. \nIIM’s participation will include a stand presenting the Institute’s innovation offer and capabilities\, as well as a presentation on 29 December within the “Sustainable Blue Economy” block. \n

SUMMARY:9th Ratoncito Pérez Tooth Collection Campaign
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Marine Research calls on all children to collaborate in the annual “Ratoncito Pérez Collection” tooth-collection campaign. \nIf you are going to CULTURGAL in Pontevedra this Saturday\, don’t forget the teeth that have fallen out and look for the CSIC cart! \n\nThe collection will take place on 26 November at CULTURGAL (Pontevedra)\, from 12:00 to 13:30 and from 16:30 to 18:30\, at the CSIC Cart\n\nWhy do we want your teeth?\nThe National Research Centre on Human Evolution (CENIEH) organises an annual campaign to collect children’s baby teeth for scientific purposes\, ranging from the study of human evolution to forensic and dental analyses. \nThe campaign\, running continuously since 2014\, is part of the “Ratoncito Pérez Collection” project\, an initiative of the Dental Anthropology group at CENIEH and its Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit. The collection already includes more than 3\,000 pieces. \nIn Galicia\, the Spanish National Research Council participates in the campaign through the Scientific Culture Unit of its Institutional Delegation. \nAs in the 2021 edition\, the collection will take place on Saturday 26 November at CULTURGAL (Pontevedra). CSIC Galicia UCC staff will be there from 12:00 to 13:30 and from 16:30 to 18:30 at the CSIC Cart\, collecting baby teeth from families who wish to join the initiative. \nAll participants will receive a diploma and a gift for taking part. Before handing in the pieces\, parents or legal guardians must complete a questionnaire with several details and sign a consent form explaining the use that will be given to the pieces. \nOne of the aims of this initiative is to allow scientists from anywhere in the world and from different fields\, such as archaeology\, forensic anthropology\, oral and dental medicine or palaeoanthropology\, to access in person or virtually the data from this large collection of teeth from children born in the 21st century for their own studies. \nCSIC in Galicia is the only Galician entity participating in this dental-piece collection campaign\, although CENIEH hopes to extend its reach to other regions and take it to other countries such as Argentina and Australia.

SUMMARY:11th Intercommunity Youth Research Forum
DESCRIPTION:Forum programme \nXosé Pintado\, from the Marine Ecology and Resources group\, will take part as a guest in the 11th Intercommunity Youth Research Forum\, which will be held from 24 to 26 November. \nThe Forum is a collaborative initiative promoted by the cooperative school Colexio Plurilingüe Alborada in Vigo and Institut El Cairat in Barcelona\, together with the Institute for Culture\, Science and Technology (ICCT) and the Galician Union of Cooperatives – EspazoCoop. \nThe Intercommunity Youth Research Forum (FIIJ) was created at the end of the 2009-2010 school year by educational centres\, including teaching cooperatives\, with the aim of offering a space to share research projects and experiences carried out by secondary-school students under the guidance of their teachers. It is aimed at students from the 1st to 4th year of compulsory secondary education and is open to any public\, private or state-subsidised school in Spain. \nIn this 11th edition\, more than 85 students from secondary education and the final years of primary education will take part\, from 8 schools in Galicia and Catalonia\, including 4 teaching cooperatives that are members of EspazoCoop. \nThe planned Forum dossier shows the variety of thematic areas covered by the 26 research projects to be presented. \nThe closing ceremony will take place on Friday\, 25 November at 18:00\, with the participation of José Luis Vázquez López\, President of the Institute for Culture\, Science and Technology; Belén Rubio Armesto\, Vice-Rector for Research at UVigo; Xosé Pintado\, Deputy Director for Scientific Culture at the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC); and Miguel Anxo Filgueira Touriño\, Vice-President of the Galician Union of Cooperatives EspazoCoop.

DESCRIPTION:Bookings and more information here \nThe Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) is organising\, together with the Library of Galicia (Xunta de Galicia) and with the collaboration of the CSIC Delegation’s Scientific Culture Unit in Galicia\, an interactive storytelling activity based on the comic “And how delicious the sea tastes!” for children aged 10 to 12. The activity is part of the Month of Science in Galician. \nThe activity will be based on an interactive storytelling session using the IIM-CSIC comic. Participants will enjoy rigorous\, age-appropriate content about marine-origin foods\, fishing and aquaculture\, traceability\, conservation and revaluation\, among other topics\, in an entertaining and accessible way. \nThe workshop will follow the comic characters Javi\, Aldara and Helena. \nThis activity is organised by the Library of Galicia (Xunta de Galicia) and CSIC to celebrate Science and Technology Week at CSIC and the Month of Science in Galician in libraries. \n\nBooking is free with prior registration on the website. There are 20 places available. \n\nAnd how delicious the sea tastes!\nDownload the comic \nThis is the second of four issues in the “Marine Science Comics” series\, led by the IIM Scientific Culture Unit and funded by the General CSIC Foundation through the Cuenta la Ciencia call. \nThe comic\, about 15 pages long\, is designed both as a teaching tool for 5th and 6th year primary school classrooms and as outreach material for the general public. It deals with marine-origin foods from fishing and aquaculture\, and is guided by the research carried out by the IIM Food Technology Department. \nIts goals include introducing basic aspects of seafood products\, their relationship with the Sustainable Development Goals and the local environment\, and educating schools and the general public about the importance of the ocean as a source of food and bioproducts related to nutrition\, health and human well-being. The final aim is to increase ocean literacy and promote responsible citizenship. \nThe initiative\, coordinated by the IIM Scientific Culture Unit\, seeks to bring society closer to knowledge and research on the ocean and its resources. It includes four issues\, one for each IIM department: Biotechnology and Aquaculture\, Ecology and Marine Resources\, Oceanography\, and Food Technology.

DESCRIPTION:The Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) premieres the 2nd season of the series “Saber do Mar”\, which will be broadcast on the IIM-CSIC YouTube channel. \nWe went out onto the streets to ask people what they know about what we do at IIM-CSIC\, what they would like to know about our scientific activity and\, ultimately\, what they would like to know about the sea. These questions\, recorded on video\, are being answered in the same format by the centre’s scientists. \nThe final result is an audiovisual series that we continue to expand with this 2nd season of #SaberDoMar. \nThis activity is organised with the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology 2018\, on the occasion of CSIC Science and Technology Week and the 2022 Month of Science in Galician. \nWatch season 1

More information is available on his profile on this website.  \nThe 33rd Luis Asorey Conference Series in Lugo\nThe Royal Galician Academy of Sciences (RAGC) and the Provincial Council of Lugo\, with the collaboration of the Terra Campus of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC)\, are organising the 33rd Luis Asorey Conference Series\, focused in 2022 on “Natural capital and ecosystem services. The new basis of the economy”. The sessions will take place from 14 to 23 November through a series of talks addressing natural assets and their externalities: restoration of natural capital after forest fires\, ecosystem services of the Natura 2000 Network\, environmental services in the new Common Agricultural Policy\, landscape\, greenhouse-gas emissions offsetting\, biodiversity\, ecosystem services of agroforestry systems and the value of natural monuments such as notable trees. \nThe conferences will take place from 14 to 23 November in the assembly hall of the Provincial Council of Lugo (rúa San Marcos\, 8)\, from 19:00 to 21:00. They are coordinated by Antonio Rigueiro\, emeritus professor at the USC Higher Polytechnic School of Engineering\, president of the Galician Forestry Association (AFG) and full member of the RAGC. They are recognised by the Galician Regional Ministry of Culture\, Education\, Vocational Training and Universities as a training activity for non-university teachers.

SUMMARY:On the wrong track: sustainable and low-emission blue food diets to mitigate climate change
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the UN Decade of Ocean Science (#SDG14)\, which aims to create a common framework to ensure that marine sciences fully support actions to manage the world’s oceans and seas sustainably and achieve the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals\, the CSIC marine centres IMEDEA\, CEAB\, ICM\, ICMAN and IIM have organised a joint lecture series entitled “Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research”\, creating a discussion forum around a monthly seminar given by a recognised expert in different marine topics. \nOn the wrong track: sustainable and low-emission blue food diets to mitigate climate change\nSeafood and other aquatic food (blue food) are often advocated as sustainable protein sources crucial to meeting global food demand. Consumption choices allow citizens to take actions that reduce the environmental burden of food production and tackle the climate crisis. This talk will explore historical blue food consumption trends in Spain\, in terms of sources\, types and the ecological footprint resulting from their production. Considering that global blue food demand is predicted to nearly double by mid-century\, this talk will illustrate how consumers’ choices can promote sustainable production practices and mitigate climate change. \nSPEAKER:  Dr. Javier Atalah. University of Alicante in Spain and the Cawthron Institute in New Zealand. \nJavier Atalah is a researcher at the Department of Marine Science and Applied Biology\, University of Alicante and the Cawthron Institute\, the largest independent research institution in New Zealand. SUMMARY:Neural networks and the seawater CO2 system. From the global ocean to the Ría de Vigo
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Broullón\, from the Oceanic Processes in Global Change Group at IIM-CSIC\, will defend his doctoral thesis at the University of Vigo (DOMAR Programme)\, in person\, in the new graduation hall of the Faculty of Marine Sciences at the University of Vigo. \nThe thesis was co-supervised by Fiz Fernández and Rosa Reboreda\, from the Institute of Marine Research of the CSIC. \nABSTRACT\nEarth’s climate has changed many times throughout geological history\, driven by interactions among the atmosphere\, geosphere\, hydrosphere\, cryosphere and biosphere. Today\, the concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide\, methane and nitrous oxide has increased sharply since the Industrial Revolution due to the burning of fossil fuels. One immediate consequence is the warming of the planet\, but about a quarter of the carbon dioxide emitted to the atmosphere dissolves in the ocean\, altering seawater chemistry and causing ocean acidification. \n\nUnderstanding ocean acidification requires knowledge of the seawater CO2 system\, including dissolved inorganic carbon\, total alkalinity\, partial pressure of CO2 and pH. These variables are essential to quantify the ocean carbon cycle\, the exchange of CO2 between atmosphere and ocean\, the buffering capacity of seawater and the vulnerability of marine ecosystems. International datasets compiled over recent decades make it possible to produce global climatologies and assess changes from the open ocean to coastal systems. \nThis doctoral thesis contributes to a better understanding of acidification at both global and local scales. At the global level\, it develops climatologies for key variables of the seawater CO2 system\, such as total alkalinity and total dissolved inorganic carbon\, using neural networks trained with international oceanographic databases. These products improve previous spatial and temporal resolution and provide robust tools for biogeochemical modelling and other studies. \nThe first part of the thesis designs a global climatology of total alkalinity and a neural network able to estimate this variable anywhere in the ocean with low error. The second part develops an equivalent climatology for total dissolved inorganic carbon\, combining GLODAP and Lamont-Doherty datasets and validating the model against independent observations and ocean time-series stations. Together\, these products provide monthly fields that help describe the marine carbon cycle and support estimates of other CO2 system variables. \nThe regional part of the thesis focuses on the Ría de Vigo\, a coastal environment of high ecological and economic importance. Neural networks were trained to reconstruct weekly time series of pH and total alkalinity from 1992 to 2019 at several stations and depth ranges. The results show strong short-term variability\, clear spatial differences between the inner and outer ría\, and long-term pH trends indicating acidification rates higher than those typically observed in the open ocean. \nThe final part of the thesis analyses hydrogen ion concentration and aragonite saturation state in the Ría de Vigo to identify the processes driving variability in the local CO2 system. Seasonal and long-term changes are controlled by photosynthesis and respiration\, carbonate precipitation and dissolution\, freshwater inputs\, solar radiation\, anthropogenic CO2 uptake and remineralisation of organic matter. The magnitude of the observed trends highlights the need for action to protect the ecological value and economic viability of the Ría de Vigo. \n\n

See the “Registration” section below – \nIntroduction\nThe ocean absorbs about 30% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) that is released in the atmosphere. As levels of atmospheric CO2 increase from human activity such as burning fossil fuels and changing land use\, the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the ocean also increases.  When CO2 is absorbed by seawater\, chemical reactions occur that reduce seawater pH\, carbonate ion concentration\, and saturation states of biologically important calcium carbonate minerals. This is called “ocean acidification”. Studies have shown that acidification can have a dramatic effect on some calcifying species\, including oysters\, clams\, sea urchins\, shallow water corals\, deep sea corals\, and calcareous plankton. Changes in ocean chemistry can affect the behavior of non-calcifying organisms as well. The ability of some fish to detect predators is decreased under acidification. Studies have shown that lower pH also affect the viability and ability of some larvae to locate suitable habitat\, conditioning the success of recruitment of new individuals. In summary\, direct and indirect effects of ocean acidification are complex and still not well understood. \nWe organized this workshop on Ocean Acidification to build relationships between scientists\, resource managers\, policy makers\, and the public in order to research and monitor the effects of changing ocean chemistry on economically and ecologically important ecosystems such as fisheries and coral reefs. The event is part of the activities planned within the Pescando 4.0 project. \nThe meeting\, which will take place at CETMAR headquarters\, will include a series of talks on use cases for digitalisation and blockchain in the sector\, followed by a participatory workshop to identify opportunities\, possible barriers and relevant technological advances related to these technologies. \nThe registration period ends on 30 September. How is this affecting the physics of the oceans\, and therefore us? The lecture will cover ocean warming and its consequences: Arctic summer sea ice has shrunk by half in extent and thickness; thermal expansion and land-ice loss are causing global sea level to rise and accelerate; tropical cyclones are becoming more violent as they draw energy from the heat stored in the upper ocean; and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has weakened since the mid-twentieth century and is now weaker than at any time in the last 1\,000 years. \nSPEAKER:  Dr. Stefan Rahmstorf. Potsdam University\, Germany. \nStefan Rahmstorf is a German oceanographer and climatologist. Since 2000\, he has been Professor of Physics of the Oceans at Potsdam University. He studied physical oceanography at Bangor University and received his PhD in oceanography from Victoria University of Wellington (1990). His work focuses on the role of ocean currents in climate change. He was one of the lead authors of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report and is co-founder of the Real Climate blog. He has written extensively on climate change for the general public and has been recognised as one of Germany’s most-cited climate scientists.

Shared knowledge. \nFull programme | Muros Mira ao Mar \n  \nThis project by the Institute of Marine Research\, Spanish National Research Council (IIM-CSIC) and the Council of Galician Culture (CCG)\, in collaboration with Culturmar\, aims to establish a dialogue between scientific knowledge and traditional and experiential knowledge around “ardora”\, the bioluminescence produced by phytoplankton blooms. \nThis bloom —usually of the species Noctiluca scintillans\, but also of other species— is related to environmental conditions and to the dynamics of the sea. The event will bring together researchers\, seafarers and cultural agents to share perspectives and experiences around this phenomenon.

DESCRIPTION:Contact Lucía Sánchez Ruiloba to book a spot for a trial run \nBook a spot \nThe Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) is hosting a workshop this week to present the latest advances in fluorescence microscopy with the Alpha3 device\, which provides intelligent optical focal scans to enable uniform\, artefact-free image processing across the entire field of view. \nThe system can be easily upgraded with options such as fast scanning\, intelligent 3D scanning\, and other advanced features. The Olympus team will travel to IIM to carry out the workshop and present the Lightsheet Alpha3\, a piece of equipment very similar to the one the Institute will have thanks to funding from the State Research Agency (AEI).

SUMMARY:Citizen science at the Lourido beach micro-reserve
DESCRIPTION:View programme \nThe Citizen Science workshops in the Lourido Dunes will take place every Saturday in July and August from 11:00 to 13:00\, for all ages. They will be run by the Hydrosphere team (a spin-off of the University of Vigo)\, the University of Vigo itself (with the participation of the Marine Research Centre and the Marine Geosciences and Territorial Planning group)\, and the Spanish National Research Council through two Scientific Culture Units (CSIC in Galicia and the Institute of Marine Research). \nThe workshops focus on the beach micro-reserve created in the Lourido dunes\, in the municipality of Nigrán\, and aim to bring citizens closer to the natural values of this coastal environment through observation\, participation and scientific outreach activities.

SUMMARY:People of the Sea 2022
DESCRIPTION:CSIC in Galicia\, the Council of Galician Culture and Nigrán Town Council are organising the event “People of the Sea 2022”\, which will take place on Saturday\, 25 June 2022 at 20:00 at the Panxón fish market\, in Nigrán. \nThe activity\, moderated by Luisa Martínez\, head of the CSIC Scientific Culture Unit in Galicia\, will consist of a public meeting and conversation between Laura López\, an 85-year-old retired fishmonger from Panxón; Rogelio Santos Queiruga\, a sailor from Porto do Son\, influencer and advocate of fishing sustainability; and Luisa Iglesias García\, Senior Technician of the Fishmongers Group at the IEO-CSIC National Centre in Vigo. Its aim is to encourage debate on the state of fishing\, sustainability\, biodiversity conservation and the emergence of invasive species through the professional careers of the invited participants. \nThe year 2022 was declared by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries under the slogan “Small scale\, big value”. It also falls within the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development\, which runs until 2030. To mark these celebrations and coincide with the patron-saint festivities of Panxón\, a parish with a long seafaring tradition\, the Council of Galician Culture\, Nigrán Town Council and CSIC are offering this event.

SUMMARY:The rapidly changing global and ocean carbon sinks
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the  UN Decade of Ocean Science (#SDG14)\, which aims to create a common framework ensuring that marine sciences fully support actions to sustainably manage the world’s oceans and seas and to achieve the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals\, the CSIC marine centres IMEDEA\, CEAB\, ICM\, ICMAN and IIM have organised a joint lecture series entitled “Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research”\, creating a discussion forum around a monthly seminar delivered by a recognised expert in different marine topics. \nThe rapidly changing global and ocean carbon sinks\nAs human activities continue to emit an always growing quantity of greenhouse gases\, terrestrial vegetation and oceans are responding in unprecedented ways to changes in both atmospheric composition and climate. How carbon-climate feedbacks develop in the future and affect the strength of the carbon sinks will determine the level of mitigation required to stabilize the global climate system. I’ll provide an overview of the current state of the carbon cycle\, the role of the oceans in modulating the concentrations of atmospheric CO2\, and the future evolution of the carbon sinks under different warming scenarios. \n \n

SUMMARY:Final cross-border event of RADAR ON RAIA
DESCRIPTION:Free registration | Register for free \nOn 22 June\, the RADAR ON RAIA project\, funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg V-A Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) 2014-2020 programme\, will present the project closing session at Fundación CETMAR. \nThe project aims to update and expand the High-Frequency Radar Network beyond the Galician border. This network has been operating since 2011 and will become a cross-border observation infrastructure that improves knowledge of ocean dynamics from local to regional scale in the north-western area of the Iberian Peninsula. \nThe project will establish a framework for cross-border collaboration beyond the physical infrastructure itself\, developing shared procedures for maintenance\, data processing and validation on both sides of the border\, as well as simple public access to all the information. \n\nIn addition\, new products will be developed to take advantage of the potential of HF radar technology. These products\, besides improving maritime emergency management\, including search for shipwreck victims (Search and Rescue\, SAR) and the management of accidental or intentional pollutant spills (Pollution Response\, LCC)\, will improve productivity and spatial planning in the Galician-Portuguese region (marine renewable energy\, fisheries and shellfish harvesting\, tourism and port sectors)\, and will provide a very useful tool for coastal risk management.

DESCRIPTION:?️ At the pergola on Eduardo Cabello Street\, in Bouzas (Vigo\, Pontevedra). \n?️ 8 June | ⏰ From 10:00 to 13:30 and from 16:00 to 19:30 \n☔ We will have a marquee to protect the activities from the rain. \nMap on Google Maps \n\nThe Institute of Marine Research of the CSIC\, in Bouzas\, will celebrate World Ocean Day on 8 June with the first edition of the Ocean Fair\, a science outreach fair where IIM-CSIC takes to the street to meet the residents of Bouzas and the surrounding area. \nDuring the event\, visitors will be able to visit the tents where IIM staff will present their work through exhibitions\, workshops\, activities and a series of surprises designed so that people of all ages can get closer to the way science looks at everything connected with the ocean. \nWe will also have a guest of honour: Rogelio Santos Queiruga (@QueirugaRogelio)\, sailor\, fisherman and science communicator on social networks\, who will join us throughout the day to share his perspective on responsible consumption and sustainability from the SeaFood Age project tent (Interreg Atlantic Area). \n\nA full morning and afternoon programme\nThe fair will begin in the morning\, from 10:00 to 13:30\, with invited schools taking part. We will discuss aquaculture applications of these cosmopolitan seaweeds. In Galicia\, some species can be found on beaches: Ulva  rigida and australis. Although they are responsible for eutrophication events that damage ecosystems and affect beaches\, they also have great economic potential in many industries\, from health and food to bioplastics and energy production.\nWith the ULVAQUO project (MINCIU).\n\n\n\nHow many mussel superpowers do you know?\n\nAfternoon ?\nSuper-adhesion\, super-resistance\, super-food and many more secrets hidden inside the mussels we are used to seeing on our coasts\, beaches and mussel rafts. In this workshop we will discuss some of these aspects and even test them live!\nWith the STRAUSS project (MICIN and AEI)\n\n\n\n\n\nManifesto Ocean!\n\nMorning ☀️\nTake part in experiments related to the movement of water masses in the ocean\, which will help explain global ocean circulation and marine currents in our rías.
