SUMMARY:On the wrong track: sustainable and low-emission blue food diets to mitigate climate change
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the UN Decade of Ocean Science (#SDG14)\, which aims to create a common framework to ensure that marine sciences fully support actions to manage the world’s oceans and seas sustainably and achieve the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals\, the CSIC marine centres IMEDEA\, CEAB\, ICM\, ICMAN and IIM have organised a joint lecture series entitled “Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research”\, creating a discussion forum around a monthly seminar given by a recognised expert in different marine topics. \nOn the wrong track: sustainable and low-emission blue food diets to mitigate climate change\nSeafood and other aquatic food (blue food) are often advocated as sustainable protein sources crucial to meeting global food demand. Consumption choices allow citizens to take actions that reduce the environmental burden of food production and tackle the climate crisis. This talk will explore historical blue food consumption trends in Spain\, in terms of sources\, types and the ecological footprint resulting from their production. Considering that global blue food demand is predicted to nearly double by mid-century\, this talk will illustrate how consumers’ choices can promote sustainable production practices and mitigate climate change. \nSPEAKER:  Dr. Javier Atalah. University of Alicante in Spain and the Cawthron Institute in New Zealand. \nJavier Atalah is a researcher at the Department of Marine Science and Applied Biology\, University of Alicante and the Cawthron Institute\, the largest independent research institution in New Zealand. His main interests are the interactions between aquaculture and the marine environment\, climate change\, and the ecology and management of invasive species. \n \n

SUMMARY:Neural networks and the seawater CO2 system. From the global ocean to the Ría de Vigo
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Broullón\, from the Oceanic Processes in Global Change Group at IIM-CSIC\, will defend his doctoral thesis at the University of Vigo (DOMAR Programme)\, in person\, in the new graduation hall of the Faculty of Marine Sciences at the University of Vigo. \nThe thesis was co-supervised by Fiz Fernández and Rosa Reboreda\, from the Institute of Marine Research of the CSIC. \nABSTRACT\nEarth’s climate has changed many times throughout geological history\, driven by interactions among the atmosphere\, geosphere\, hydrosphere\, cryosphere and biosphere. Today\, the concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide\, methane and nitrous oxide has increased sharply since the Industrial Revolution due to the burning of fossil fuels. One immediate consequence is the warming of the planet\, but about a quarter of the carbon dioxide emitted to the atmosphere dissolves in the ocean\, altering seawater chemistry and causing ocean acidification. \n\nUnderstanding ocean acidification requires knowledge of the seawater CO2 system\, including dissolved inorganic carbon\, total alkalinity\, partial pressure of CO2 and pH. These variables are essential to quantify the ocean carbon cycle\, the exchange of CO2 between atmosphere and ocean\, the buffering capacity of seawater and the vulnerability of marine ecosystems. International datasets compiled over recent decades make it possible to produce global climatologies and assess changes from the open ocean to coastal systems. \nThis doctoral thesis contributes to a better understanding of acidification at both global and local scales. At the global level\, it develops climatologies for key variables of the seawater CO2 system\, such as total alkalinity and total dissolved inorganic carbon\, using neural networks trained with international oceanographic databases. These products improve previous spatial and temporal resolution and provide robust tools for biogeochemical modelling and other studies. \nThe first part of the thesis designs a global climatology of total alkalinity and a neural network able to estimate this variable anywhere in the ocean with low error. The second part develops an equivalent climatology for total dissolved inorganic carbon\, combining GLODAP and Lamont-Doherty datasets and validating the model against independent observations and ocean time-series stations. Together\, these products provide monthly fields that help describe the marine carbon cycle and support estimates of other CO2 system variables. \nThe regional part of the thesis focuses on the Ría de Vigo\, a coastal environment of high ecological and economic importance. Neural networks were trained to reconstruct weekly time series of pH and total alkalinity from 1992 to 2019 at several stations and depth ranges. The results show strong short-term variability\, clear spatial differences between the inner and outer ría\, and long-term pH trends indicating acidification rates higher than those typically observed in the open ocean. \nThe final part of the thesis analyses hydrogen ion concentration and aragonite saturation state in the Ría de Vigo to identify the processes driving variability in the local CO2 system. Seasonal and long-term changes are controlled by photosynthesis and respiration\, carbonate precipitation and dissolution\, freshwater inputs\, solar radiation\, anthropogenic CO2 uptake and remineralisation of organic matter. The magnitude of the observed trends highlights the need for action to protect the ecological value and economic viability of the Ría de Vigo. \n\n

SUMMARY:Workshop on Ocean Acidification

See the “Registration” section below – \nIntroduction\nThe ocean absorbs about 30% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) that is released in the atmosphere. As levels of atmospheric CO2 increase from human activity such as burning fossil fuels and changing land use\, the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the ocean also increases.  When CO2 is absorbed by seawater\, chemical reactions occur that reduce seawater pH\, carbonate ion concentration\, and saturation states of biologically important calcium carbonate minerals. This is called “ocean acidification”. Studies have shown that acidification can have a dramatic effect on some calcifying species\, including oysters\, clams\, sea urchins\, shallow water corals\, deep sea corals\, and calcareous plankton. Changes in ocean chemistry can affect the behavior of non-calcifying organisms as well. The ability of some fish to detect predators is decreased under acidification. Studies have shown that lower pH also affect the viability and ability of some larvae to locate suitable habitat\, conditioning the success of recruitment of new individuals. In summary\, direct and indirect effects of ocean acidification are complex and still not well understood. \nWe organized this workshop on Ocean Acidification to build relationships between scientists\, resource managers\, policy makers\, and the public in order to research and monitor the effects of changing ocean chemistry on economically and ecologically important ecosystems such as fisheries and coral reefs. SUMMARY:Fishing 4.0: Digitalisation and blockchain
DESCRIPTION:Registration | Register \nProgramme \nThe Institute of Marine Research\, together with the Marine Technology Centre – CETMAR Foundation and the Vigo Shipowners’ Cooperative\, which leads the project\, is organising a workshop on 11 October on the potential of digitalisation and blockchain for traceability\, quality and sustainability in the fisheries sector. The event is part of the activities planned within the Pescando 4.0 project. \nThe meeting\, which will take place at CETMAR headquarters\, will include a series of talks on use cases for digitalisation and blockchain in the sector\, followed by a participatory workshop to identify opportunities\, possible barriers and relevant technological advances related to these technologies. \nThe registration period ends on 30 September. Places are limited to 40 participants. \nAbout the “Pescando 4.0” project\nThe Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC)\, the Marine Technology Centre (CETMAR) and the Vigo Fishing Shipowners’ Cooperative (ARVI) have formed a consortium to carry out the Pescando 4.0 project. \nThe project\, which will run until October 2023\, is funded by the Recovery\, Transformation and Resilience Plan and the European Next Generation EU funds\, under Royal Decree 685/2021 of 3 August. \nThe main objective is to launch a secure and reliable system that guarantees the truthfulness and immutability of information associated with the traceability\, food safety and sustainability of fishery products. \nTo this end\, a pilot platform based on 4.0 technologies\, specifically blockchain and IoT\, will be developed and launched to validate the functioning of this solution in three fisheries\, from product capture to first sale. \nYou can check the project page here. \n  \n \n

DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FORM \nPROVISIONAL PROGRAMME | ForoACUI XXIV  \n  \nNext Thursday and Friday\, 6 and 7 October\, the 24th Forum on Marine Resources and Aquaculture of the Galician Rías will be held at the Municipal Auditorium of O Grove. \nThis forum is an annual meeting created in 1998 as a reference space to communicate the current situation and future prospects of fishing\, shellfishing and aquaculture in Galicia. Its main goals are training\, outreach and\, above all\, interaction between researchers\, the business sector and public administration. \nThe first day will open with an inaugural lecture and two working sessions during the morning: one on the history and projects of the Centre for Marine Research (CIMA)\, and another on shellfishing and small-scale fishing\, with the participation of Laura García Peteiro\, researcher at IIM-CSIC. \nThe second day will focus on “Threats and challenges for the aquaculture of the future”\, with contributions from social representatives and scientific experts offering a multidisciplinary perspective. Among them will be IIM-CSIC Research Professor Ángel F. González González. \nOther professionals from the sector and scientists from IMEDEA-UiB-CSIC and IEO-CSIC will also take part. \nThe event will close with the “17th Award for Best Communications”. Interested participants may submit their work as a poster or audiovisual communication.

DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the UN Decade of Ocean Science (#SDG14)\, which aims to create a common framework to ensure that marine sciences fully support actions to manage the world’s oceans and seas sustainably and achieve the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals\, the CSIC marine centres IMEDEA\, CEAB\, ICM\, ICMAN and IIM have organised a joint lecture series entitled “Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research”\, creating a discussion forum around a monthly seminar given by a recognised expert in different marine topics. \nThe Oceans in a Changing Climate\nThe Earth is undergoing a rapid major warming\, unprecedented in its speed for millions of years. How is this affecting the physics of the oceans\, and therefore us? The lecture will cover ocean warming and its consequences: Arctic summer sea ice has shrunk by half in extent and thickness; thermal expansion and land-ice loss are causing global sea level to rise and accelerate; tropical cyclones are becoming more violent as they draw energy from the heat stored in the upper ocean; and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has weakened since the mid-twentieth century and is now weaker than at any time in the last 1\,000 years. \nSPEAKER:  Dr. Stefan Rahmstorf. Potsdam University\, Germany. \nStefan Rahmstorf is a German oceanographer and climatologist. Since 2000\, he has been Professor of Physics of the Oceans at Potsdam University. He studied physical oceanography at Bangor University and received his PhD in oceanography from Victoria University of Wellington (1990). His work focuses on the role of ocean currents in climate change. He was one of the lead authors of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report and is co-founder of the Real Climate blog. He has written extensively on climate change for the general public and has been recognised as one of Germany’s most-cited climate scientists.

Shared knowledge. \nFull programme | Muros Mira ao Mar \n  \nThis project by the Institute of Marine Research\, Spanish National Research Council (IIM-CSIC) and the Council of Galician Culture (CCG)\, in collaboration with Culturmar\, aims to establish a dialogue between scientific knowledge and traditional and experiential knowledge around “ardora”\, the bioluminescence produced by phytoplankton blooms. \nThis bloom —usually of the species Noctiluca scintillans\, but also of other species— is related to environmental conditions and to the dynamics of the sea. The event will bring together researchers\, seafarers and cultural agents to share perspectives and experiences around this phenomenon.

DESCRIPTION:CSIC in Galicia\, the Council of Galician Culture and Nigrán Town Council are organising the event “People of the Sea 2022”\, which will take place on Saturday\, 25 June 2022 at 20:00 at the Panxón fish market\, in Nigrán. \nThe activity\, moderated by Luisa Martínez\, head of the CSIC Scientific Culture Unit in Galicia\, will consist of a public meeting and conversation between Laura López\, an 85-year-old retired fishmonger from Panxón; Rogelio Santos Queiruga\, a sailor from Porto do Son\, influencer and advocate of fishing sustainability; and Luisa Iglesias García\, Senior Technician of the Fishmongers Group at the IEO-CSIC National Centre in Vigo. Its aim is to encourage debate on the state of fishing\, sustainability\, biodiversity conservation and the emergence of invasive species through the professional careers of the invited participants. \nThe year 2022 was declared by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries under the slogan “Small scale\, big value”. It also falls within the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development\, which runs until 2030. To mark these celebrations and coincide with the patron-saint festivities of Panxón\, a parish with a long seafaring tradition\, the Council of Galician Culture\, Nigrán Town Council and CSIC are offering this event.

SUMMARY:The rapidly changing global and ocean carbon sinks
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the  UN Decade of Ocean Science (#SDG14)\, which aims to create a common framework ensuring that marine sciences fully support actions to sustainably manage the world’s oceans and seas and to achieve the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals\, the CSIC marine centres IMEDEA\, CEAB\, ICM\, ICMAN and IIM have organised a joint lecture series entitled “Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research”\, creating a discussion forum around a monthly seminar delivered by a recognised expert in different marine topics. \nThe rapidly changing global and ocean carbon sinks\nAs human activities continue to emit an always growing quantity of greenhouse gases\, terrestrial vegetation and oceans are responding in unprecedented ways to changes in both atmospheric composition and climate. How carbon-climate feedbacks develop in the future and affect the strength of the carbon sinks will determine the level of mitigation required to stabilize the global climate system. I’ll provide an overview of the current state of the carbon cycle\, the role of the oceans in modulating the concentrations of atmospheric CO2\, and the future evolution of the carbon sinks under different warming scenarios. \n \n

SUMMARY:Final cross-border event of RADAR ON RAIA
DESCRIPTION:Free registration | Register for free \nOn 22 June\, the RADAR ON RAIA project\, funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg V-A Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) 2014-2020 programme\, will present the project closing session at Fundación CETMAR. \nThe project aims to update and expand the High-Frequency Radar Network beyond the Galician border. This network has been operating since 2011 and will become a cross-border observation infrastructure that improves knowledge of ocean dynamics from local to regional scale in the north-western area of the Iberian Peninsula. \nThe project will establish a framework for cross-border collaboration beyond the physical infrastructure itself\, developing shared procedures for maintenance\, data processing and validation on both sides of the border\, as well as simple public access to all the information. \n\nIn addition\, new products will be developed to take advantage of the potential of HF radar technology. These products\, besides improving maritime emergency management\, including search for shipwreck victims (Search and Rescue\, SAR) and the management of accidental or intentional pollutant spills (Pollution Response\, LCC)\, will improve productivity and spatial planning in the Galician-Portuguese region (marine renewable energy\, fisheries and shellfish harvesting\, tourism and port sectors)\, and will provide a very useful tool for coastal risk management.

DESCRIPTION:Free registration | Register for free \nThe Royal Galician Academy of Sciences (RAGC) and the Pontevedra Provincial Council consider it of common interest to collaborate in carrying out the Aida Fernández Ríos Lecture Series\, promoting public interest in science and highlighting the important scientific work carried out in Galicia. \nThe series is named after researcher Aida Fernández Ríos (Vigo\, 1947-Moaña\, 2015). Aida stood out for her knowledge of ocean acidification caused by climate change and was the first woman to direct the Institute of Marine Research. \n\nTalk programme\nDiscover the full programme on the official website of the series \n\nAida Fernández Ríos\nShe completed her lower secondary studies in Vigo and\, at the age of 25\, began working as a laboratory assistant at the CSIC Institute of Fisheries Research (IIP-CSIC)\, now known as the Institute of Marine Research. She combined her work with her studies\, which allowed her to complete secondary school\, study Biology at the University of Santiago and\, later\, in 1992\, defend her doctoral thesis\, supervised by Fernando Fraga\, on phytoplankton in the Vigo Ría and its environment and conditions. Shortly afterwards\, she joined the Institute of Marine Research (IIM) as a researcher\, where she developed her entire career until reaching the highest rank as research professor. From 2006 to 2011 she was director of the Institute\, becoming the first woman to hold this position. From phytoplankton studies she moved into physical oceanography and\, finally\, into studies on ocean acidification as a consequence of climate change\, becoming a leading researcher in Europe and chairing an International Geosphere Committee from 2005 to 2011. \nIn 2015 she was appointed a member of the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences (RAGC).

SUMMARY:Women of Science in Your Neighbourhood
DESCRIPTION:Marine research takes to the streets of Vigo through the image of real women who work for science every day at the CSIC Institute of Marine Research in Vigo. The “Women of Science in Your Neighbourhood” initiative\, an adaptation of the award-winning original idea from the University of Zaragoza\, will fill bus shelters across the city with photographs of these workers. Each image also includes a sentence in which the protagonist shares something about her hobbies\, tastes and interests beyond science. The aim is to show that women who do science are ordinary\, approachable women\, and to bring society closer to research and innovation. The campaign is organised by the IIM-CSIC Scientific Culture Unit\, with the collaboration of Vigo City Council in installing the bus-shelter displays. \nThe event consists of an exhibition of 12 photographs of researchers\, predoctoral researchers and technicians from IIM-CSIC on up to 30 billboards and bus shelters provided in collaboration with Vigo City Council. Each display includes a quote in which the protagonist talks about her work in science as well as a hobby or interest from her personal life. The installation began on 6 February and will remain on the streets until 27 February. \nIn this way\, the initiative seeks to break stereotypes and reinforce the idea that science is close and accessible\, and that the women who work in it are citizens of our city with hobbies\, friends\, family and diverse interests like anyone else.

SUMMARY:The Gill-Oxygen Limitation Theory (GOLT)
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the  UN Decade of Ocean Science (#SDG14)\, which aims to create a common framework to ensure that marine sciences fully support actions to sustainably manage the world’s oceans and seas and achieve the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals\, the CSIC marine centres — IMEDEA\, CEAB\, ICM\, ICMAN and IIM — have organised a joint lecture series entitled “Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research”\, creating a discussion forum around a monthly seminar delivered by a recognised expert on different marine topics. \nThe Gill-Oxygen Limitation Theory (GOLT)\nBoth marine and freshwater fishes are facing the challenges posed by climate change-induced increase in water temperature and habitat deoxygenation\, which results in disruptions to their life history and reproductive phenology in addition to distributional shifts and structural changes in the communities of which they are part. These disruptions will intensify the deleterious effects of fisheries on fish communities. This presentation will show how the author’s Gill-Oxygen Limitation Theory (GOLT)\, and its various corollaries\, can help explain these changes\, and render superfluous the species- and local-specific (ad hoc) hypotheses that are usually advanced to explain these changes.

SUMMARY:Tara Oceans: Eco-Systems Biology at Planetary Scale
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the UN Decade of Ocean Science (#SDG14)\, which aims to generate a common framework to ensure that marine sciences fully support actions to sustainably manage the world’s oceans and seas\, and thereby achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, the CSIC marine centres: IMEDEA\, CEAB\, ICM\, ICMAN\, and the IIM have organised a joint lecture series entitled “Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research”\, creating a forum for discussion around a monthly seminar delivered by a recognised expert in different marine topics. \nTara Oceans: Eco-Systems Biology at Planetary Scale\nThe ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth and yet we know very little about it. This is particularly true for the plankton that drift within\, even though they form the base of marine food webs and are key players in Earth’s biogeochemical cycles. Ocean plankton are at least as important for the Earth system as the forests on land\, but most of them are invisible to the naked eye and thus are largely uncharacterized. To increase our understanding of this underexplored world\, a multidisciplinary consortium\, Tara Oceans\, was formed around the 36m research schooner Tara\, which sampled plankton at more than 210 sites and multiple depth layers in all the major oceanic regions during expeditions from 2009-2013 (Karsenti et al. Plos Biol.\, 2011). This talk will summarize the foundational resources from the project\, which collectively represent the largest DNA sequencing effort for the oceans (see Science special issue May 22\, 2015 and Cell\, Nov 14\, 2019)\, and analyses that illustrate several aspects of the Tara Oceans’ eco-systems biology approach to address microbial contributions to ecological and evolutionary processes. The project provides unique resources for several scientific disciplines that are foundational for mapping ocean biodiversity of a wide range of organisms that are rarely studied together\, exploring their interactions\, and integrating biology into our physico-chemical understanding of the ocean\, as well as for identifying new organisms and genes of biotechnological interest. DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the  UN Decade of Ocean Science (#SDG14)\, which aims to create a common framework to ensure that marine sciences fully support actions to sustainably manage the world’s oceans and seas and achieve the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals\, the CSIC marine centres — IMEDEA\, CEAB\, ICM\, ICMAN and IIM — have organised a joint lecture series entitled “Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research”\, creating a discussion forum around a monthly seminar delivered by a recognised expert on different marine topics. \n\nWinners\, losers and shifts of the pelagic ecosystem in the western Mediterranean Sea: integrating knowledge and projecting trajectories of change\n\n \n\nNowadays\, the single-stock assessment approach is most used for the management of marine resources. However\, the dynamics of exploited stocks are influenced by other factors than fishing alone. Environmental and ecosystem dynamics\, and economic and social aspects are also highly relevant\, and can interact with fishing impacts. These factors are often overlooked when making management decisions. \n\n \n\nIn particular\, small pelagic fish species (SPF) such as European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) are some of the most commercially exploited species in the NW Mediterranean Sea. They have shown important changes in the last decades in terms of shifts in abundance\, biomass\, body condition\, growth\, reproduction and spatial distribution. Different hypotheses have been formed to explain these changes\, such as an increase in fishing impacts; changes in environmental conditions that have affected annual recruitment\, growth\, general conditions of organisms\, and planktonic productivity and quality; a recent recovery of pelagic predators; and competition for food with jellyfish or round sardinella (Sardinella aurita).\nUnder three consecutive projects\, SPELMED\, PELWEB and PELCAT\, we aimed at improving and integrating SPF knowledge into a multi-modelling platform to quantify the impacts and project future trajectories of change. We specifically aimed at (1) identifying historical changes of small pelagic fish population traits (e.g. body condition\, abundance and distribution); (2) quantifying the ecological and socio-economic consequences of the changes in SPF populations on fisheries\, iconic predator species\, and ecosystem-wide dynamics\, and (3) identifying robust future management options to achieve resilient and healthy SPF populations and a sustainable exploitation under climate change. \n\nDuring this talk\, I will present some of our findings and I will illustrate the importance of an integrated consideration of climatological\, environmental\, ecological and socio-economic factors when managing exploited resources from an ecosystem-based management perspective. I will showcase the tools that we used to generate and integrate results\, ranging from stock assessments to species distribution models and process-oriented ecosystem spatial-temporal models. \n\n  \n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Search for new strategies for controlling viral diseases in aquaculture
DESCRIPTION:Viral encephalopathy and retinopathy (VER) disease caused by the nerve necrosis virus (NNV) or nodavirus\, generates up to 100% mortality in juvenile European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)\, causing significant economic losses. Therefore\, it is necessary to know in depth the transcriptomic response of sea bass to this virus\, as well as the mechanisms that are influencing this response\, formulate vaccines with new antigens that generate greater protection at lower cost\, and also study other model species\, such as the zebrafish\, with which it is easier to work in the laboratory\, points addressed in this Doctoral Thesis. \nFollow it on streaming: USC Rooms

SUMMARY:2nd Aida Fernández Ríos Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Royal Galician Academy of Sciences (RAGC) and Pontevedra Provincial Council consider it to be of common interest to collaborate on the 2nd edition of the Aida Fernández Ríos Lecture Series in 2021\, in order to promote public interest and support the enormous scientific work carried out in Galicia. Since its foundation in 1973\, the RAGC has organised activities\, courses and lecture series throughout Galicia and\, in line with its objectives of disseminating science and technology\, aims to establish this lecture series addressing different topics with social impact. \nThe first block consists of webinar-format lectures delivered by renowned professionals in their fields\, proposed by the RAGC. The second block consists of lectures in schools in the province of Pontevedra aimed at secondary-school students. \nAida Fernández Ríos (Vigo\, 1947-Moaña\, 2015) was a researcher noted for her knowledge of ocean acidification caused by climate change and was the first woman to direct the Institute of Marine Research. \nShe completed her elementary secondary education in Vigo and\, at the age of 25\, began working as a laboratory assistant at the CSIC Institute of Fisheries Research\, now known as the Institute of Marine Research. She combined her work with her studies\, which allowed her to complete upper secondary education\, study Biology at the University of Santiago and\, in 1992\, defend her doctoral thesis\, supervised by Fernando Fraga\, on phytoplankton in the Ría de Vigo and its environmental conditions. Shortly afterwards she joined the Institute of Fisheries Research as a researcher\, where she developed her entire career until reaching the highest category as a research professor. From 2006 to 2011 she was director of the IIP\, becoming the first woman to hold that responsibility. From phytoplankton studies she moved into physical oceanography and\, finally\, into studies on ocean acidification as a consequence of climate change\, becoming a leading researcher in Europe and chairing an International Geosphere Committee with these objectives from 2005 to 2011. In 2015 she was appointed full member of the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences.

DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the  UN Decade of Ocean Science (#SDG14)\, which aims to create a common framework to ensure that marine sciences fully support actions to sustainably manage the world’s oceans and seas and achieve the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals\, the CSIC marine centres — IMEDEA\, CEAB\, ICM\, ICMAN and IIM — have organised a joint lecture series entitled “Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research”\, creating a discussion forum around a monthly seminar delivered by a recognised expert on different marine topics. \nTo drown or not to drown? On the role of ecology in flood defense\nMarine ecosystem engineers are species that alter their environment and therefore interact with the forces originating from tidal currents and waves. Biophysical interactions by ecosystem engineers (e.g. vegetation like salt marshes\, mangroves\, seagrass\, aquatic water plants\, reef forming animals like oysters and mussels\, and bioturbating animals living in the sea floor) can have major consequences for the functioning and development of estuarine and marine systems. Tjeerd Bouma is interested in obtaining a better understanding of ecosystem engineering as a strategy (fundamental ecology)\, the thresholds ecosystem engineers encounter for establishment to overcome bottle necks in ecosystem restoration\, and the influence ecosystem engineers have on ecosystem functioning by altering resource fluxes\, biodiversity\, ecosystem resilience and landscape evolution\, with management implications and specifically the opportunities this offers for the benefit of humanity generating ecosystem services like e.g. Nature Based Flood Defenses. \n \n
