SUMMARY:3rd Aida Fernández Ríos Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Free registration | Register for free \nThe Royal Galician Academy of Sciences (RAGC) and the Pontevedra Provincial Council consider it of common interest to collaborate in carrying out the Aida Fernández Ríos Lecture Series\, promoting public interest in science and highlighting the important scientific work carried out in Galicia. \nThe series is named after researcher Aida Fernández Ríos (Vigo\, 1947-Moaña\, 2015). Aida stood out for her knowledge of ocean acidification caused by climate change and was the first woman to direct the Institute of Marine Research. \n\nTalk programme\nDiscover the full programme on the official website of the series \n\nAida Fernández Ríos\nShe completed her lower secondary studies in Vigo and\, at the age of 25\, began working as a laboratory assistant at the CSIC Institute of Fisheries Research (IIP-CSIC)\, now known as the Institute of Marine Research. She combined her work with her studies\, which allowed her to complete secondary school\, study Biology at the University of Santiago and\, later\, in 1992\, defend her doctoral thesis\, supervised by Fernando Fraga\, on phytoplankton in the Vigo Ría and its environment and conditions. Shortly afterwards\, she joined the Institute of Marine Research (IIM) as a researcher\, where she developed her entire career until reaching the highest rank as research professor. From 2006 to 2011 she was director of the Institute\, becoming the first woman to hold this position. From phytoplankton studies she moved into physical oceanography and\, finally\, into studies on ocean acidification as a consequence of climate change\, becoming a leading researcher in Europe and chairing an International Geosphere Committee from 2005 to 2011. \nIn 2015 she was appointed a member of the Royal Galician Academy of Sciences (RAGC).

SUMMARY:Ocean Fair | World Ocean Day
DESCRIPTION:?️ At the pergola on Eduardo Cabello Street\, in Bouzas (Vigo\, Pontevedra). \n?️ 8 June | ⏰ From 10:00 to 13:30 and from 16:00 to 19:30 \n☔ We will have a marquee to protect the activities from the rain. \nMap on Google Maps \n\nThe Institute of Marine Research of the CSIC\, in Bouzas\, will celebrate World Ocean Day on 8 June with the first edition of the Ocean Fair\, a science outreach fair where IIM-CSIC takes to the street to meet the residents of Bouzas and the surrounding area. \nDuring the event\, visitors will be able to visit the tents where IIM staff will present their work through exhibitions\, workshops\, activities and a series of surprises designed so that people of all ages can get closer to the way science looks at everything connected with the ocean. \nWe will also have a guest of honour: Rogelio Santos Queiruga (@QueirugaRogelio)\, sailor\, fisherman and science communicator on social networks\, who will join us throughout the day to share his perspective on responsible consumption and sustainability from the SeaFood Age project tent (Interreg Atlantic Area). \n\nA full morning and afternoon programme\nThe fair will begin in the morning\, from 10:00 to 13:30\, with invited schools taking part. In the afternoon\, from 16:00 to 19:30\, it will be open to the general public.  \nWorkshops\nMost will be available both in the morning and afternoon. Some may alternate. \n\n\nChoose smart food with SeafoodAge and Rogelio Santos Queiruga\n\nAll day ☀️?\nThe activity will show several project results from sea to table: the production of ingredients and foods of marine origin using circular-economy concepts\, the use of DNA-based techniques for ingredient identification\, and an intelligent label that monitors food quality along the chain. And a few more surprises.\nWith the SeaFoodAge project (Interreg Atlantic Area) and fisherman and communicator Rogelio Santos Queiruga!\n\n\n\nSea lettuce: a cosmopolitan seaweed to support aquaculture.\n\nAll day ☀️?\nIn this workshop\, algae of the genus Ulva will take centre stage. We will discuss aquaculture applications of these cosmopolitan seaweeds. In Galicia\, some species can be found on beaches: Ulva  rigida and australis. Although they are responsible for eutrophication events that damage ecosystems and affect beaches\, they also have great economic potential in many industries\, from health and food to bioplastics and energy production.\nWith the ULVAQUO project (MINCIU).\n\n\n\nHow many mussel superpowers do you know?\n\nAfternoon ?\nSuper-adhesion\, super-resistance\, super-food and many more secrets hidden inside the mussels we are used to seeing on our coasts\, beaches and mussel rafts. In this workshop we will discuss some of these aspects and even test them live!\nWith the STRAUSS project (MICIN and AEI)\n\n\n\n\n\nManifesto Ocean!\n\nMorning ☀️\nTake part in experiments related to the movement of water masses in the ocean\, which will help explain global ocean circulation and marine currents in our rías. Visitors will also learn about the different tasks carried out by this research group\, such as oceanographic campaigns and laboratory analyses\, through a photographic exhibition.\nWith the participation of the “Manifesto Ocean” project and the Ocean Processes in Global Change group.\n\n\n\nExhibitions\n\n\nHow delicious the sea tastes!\n\nAll day ☀️?\nThere will be a permanent exhibition throughout the day where visitors can read the new IIM-CSIC comic “E que rico sabe o mar!”. Follow the adventures of Javi\, Aldara and Helena in this initiative funded by the General CSIC Foundation under the CuentaLaCiencia call. The story explores marine-origin foods from fishing and aquaculture\, with research carried out at IIM-CSIC in biological processes and food technology as its thread.\n\n\n\nMeeting with Rogelio Queiruga\n \n\nAll day ☀️?\n[At the SeaFood Age activity] The well-known sailor Rogelio Santos Queiruga will be present at our fair throughout the day as part of the SeaFood Age project activity. Don’t miss it: come and hear what he has to say about fishing\, science and sustainability! Rogelio has spent 27 of his 45 years working as a sailor\, fisherman and communicator #InGalician of seafaring values and fishing. He promotes sustainability\, science and responsible consumption as keys to a better future.\n\n

SUMMARY:Final cross-border event of RADAR ON RAIA
DESCRIPTION:Free registration | Register for free \nOn 22 June\, the RADAR ON RAIA project\, funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg V-A Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) 2014-2020 programme\, will present the project closing session at Fundación CETMAR. \nThe project aims to update and expand the High-Frequency Radar Network beyond the Galician border. This network has been operating since 2011 and will become a cross-border observation infrastructure that improves knowledge of ocean dynamics from local to regional scale in the north-western area of the Iberian Peninsula. \nThe project will establish a framework for cross-border collaboration beyond the physical infrastructure itself\, developing shared procedures for maintenance\, data processing and validation on both sides of the border\, as well as simple public access to all the information. \n\nIn addition\, new products will be developed to take advantage of the potential of HF radar technology. These products\, besides improving maritime emergency management\, including search for shipwreck victims (Search and Rescue\, SAR) and the management of accidental or intentional pollutant spills (Pollution Response\, LCC)\, will improve productivity and spatial planning in the Galician-Portuguese region (marine renewable energy\, fisheries and shellfish harvesting\, tourism and port sectors)\, and will provide a very useful tool for coastal risk management.

SUMMARY:The rapidly changing global and ocean carbon sinks
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the  UN Decade of Ocean Science (#SDG14)\, which aims to create a common framework ensuring that marine sciences fully support actions to sustainably manage the world’s oceans and seas and to achieve the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals\, the CSIC marine centres IMEDEA\, CEAB\, ICM\, ICMAN and IIM have organised a joint lecture series entitled “Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research”\, creating a discussion forum around a monthly seminar delivered by a recognised expert in different marine topics. \nThe rapidly changing global and ocean carbon sinks\nAs human activities continue to emit an always growing quantity of greenhouse gases\, terrestrial vegetation and oceans are responding in unprecedented ways to changes in both atmospheric composition and climate. How carbon-climate feedbacks develop in the future and affect the strength of the carbon sinks will determine the level of mitigation required to stabilize the global climate system. I’ll provide an overview of the current state of the carbon cycle\, the role of the oceans in modulating the concentrations of atmospheric CO2\, and the future evolution of the carbon sinks under different warming scenarios. \n \n
