DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FORM \nPROVISIONAL PROGRAMME | ForoACUI XXIV  \n  \nNext Thursday and Friday\, 6 and 7 October\, the 24th Forum on Marine Resources and Aquaculture of the Galician Rías will be held at the Municipal Auditorium of O Grove. \nThis forum is an annual meeting created in 1998 as a reference space to communicate the current situation and future prospects of fishing\, shellfishing and aquaculture in Galicia. Its main goals are training\, outreach and\, above all\, interaction between researchers\, the business sector and public administration. \nThe first day will open with an inaugural lecture and two working sessions during the morning: one on the history and projects of the Centre for Marine Research (CIMA)\, and another on shellfishing and small-scale fishing\, with the participation of Laura García Peteiro\, researcher at IIM-CSIC. \nThe second day will focus on “Threats and challenges for the aquaculture of the future”\, with contributions from social representatives and scientific experts offering a multidisciplinary perspective. Among them will be IIM-CSIC Research Professor Ángel F. González González. \nOther professionals from the sector and scientists from IMEDEA-UiB-CSIC and IEO-CSIC will also take part. \nThe event will close with the “17th Award for Best Communications”. Interested participants may submit their work as a poster or audiovisual communication.

SUMMARY:Fishing 4.0: Digitalisation and blockchain
DESCRIPTION:Registration | Register \nProgramme \nThe Institute of Marine Research\, together with the Marine Technology Centre – CETMAR Foundation and the Vigo Shipowners’ Cooperative\, which leads the project\, is organising a workshop on 11 October on the potential of digitalisation and blockchain for traceability\, quality and sustainability in the fisheries sector. The event is part of the activities planned within the Pescando 4.0 project. \nThe meeting\, which will take place at CETMAR headquarters\, will include a series of talks on use cases for digitalisation and blockchain in the sector\, followed by a participatory workshop to identify opportunities\, possible barriers and relevant technological advances related to these technologies. \nThe registration period ends on 30 September. Places are limited to 40 participants. \nAbout the “Pescando 4.0” project\nThe Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC)\, the Marine Technology Centre (CETMAR) and the Vigo Fishing Shipowners’ Cooperative (ARVI) have formed a consortium to carry out the Pescando 4.0 project. \nThe project\, which will run until October 2023\, is funded by the Recovery\, Transformation and Resilience Plan and the European Next Generation EU funds\, under Royal Decree 685/2021 of 3 August. \nThe main objective is to launch a secure and reliable system that guarantees the truthfulness and immutability of information associated with the traceability\, food safety and sustainability of fishery products. \nTo this end\, a pilot platform based on 4.0 technologies\, specifically blockchain and IoT\, will be developed and launched to validate the functioning of this solution in three fisheries\, from product capture to first sale. \nYou can check the project page here. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Workshop on Ocean Acidification

See the “Registration” section below – \nIntroduction\nThe ocean absorbs about 30% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) that is released in the atmosphere. As levels of atmospheric CO2 increase from human activity such as burning fossil fuels and changing land use\, the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the ocean also increases.  When CO2 is absorbed by seawater\, chemical reactions occur that reduce seawater pH\, carbonate ion concentration\, and saturation states of biologically important calcium carbonate minerals. This is called “ocean acidification”. Studies have shown that acidification can have a dramatic effect on some calcifying species\, including oysters\, clams\, sea urchins\, shallow water corals\, deep sea corals\, and calcareous plankton. Changes in ocean chemistry can affect the behavior of non-calcifying organisms as well. The ability of some fish to detect predators is decreased under acidification. Studies have shown that lower pH also affect the viability and ability of some larvae to locate suitable habitat\, conditioning the success of recruitment of new individuals. In summary\, direct and indirect effects of ocean acidification are complex and still not well understood. \nWe organized this workshop on Ocean Acidification to build relationships between scientists\, resource managers\, policy makers\, and the public in order to research and monitor the effects of changing ocean chemistry on economically and ecologically important ecosystems such as fisheries and coral reefs. SUMMARY:Neural networks and the seawater CO2 system. From the global ocean to the Ría de Vigo
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Broullón\, from the Oceanic Processes in Global Change Group at IIM-CSIC\, will defend his doctoral thesis at the University of Vigo (DOMAR Programme)\, in person\, in the new graduation hall of the Faculty of Marine Sciences at the University of Vigo. \nThe thesis was co-supervised by Fiz Fernández and Rosa Reboreda\, from the Institute of Marine Research of the CSIC. \nABSTRACT\nEarth’s climate has changed many times throughout geological history\, driven by interactions among the atmosphere\, geosphere\, hydrosphere\, cryosphere and biosphere. Today\, the concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide\, methane and nitrous oxide has increased sharply since the Industrial Revolution due to the burning of fossil fuels. One immediate consequence is the warming of the planet\, but about a quarter of the carbon dioxide emitted to the atmosphere dissolves in the ocean\, altering seawater chemistry and causing ocean acidification. \n\nUnderstanding ocean acidification requires knowledge of the seawater CO2 system\, including dissolved inorganic carbon\, total alkalinity\, partial pressure of CO2 and pH. These variables are essential to quantify the ocean carbon cycle\, the exchange of CO2 between atmosphere and ocean\, the buffering capacity of seawater and the vulnerability of marine ecosystems. International datasets compiled over recent decades make it possible to produce global climatologies and assess changes from the open ocean to coastal systems. \nThis doctoral thesis contributes to a better understanding of acidification at both global and local scales. At the global level\, it develops climatologies for key variables of the seawater CO2 system\, such as total alkalinity and total dissolved inorganic carbon\, using neural networks trained with international oceanographic databases. These products improve previous spatial and temporal resolution and provide robust tools for biogeochemical modelling and other studies. \nThe first part of the thesis designs a global climatology of total alkalinity and a neural network able to estimate this variable anywhere in the ocean with low error. The second part develops an equivalent climatology for total dissolved inorganic carbon\, combining GLODAP and Lamont-Doherty datasets and validating the model against independent observations and ocean time-series stations. Together\, these products provide monthly fields that help describe the marine carbon cycle and support estimates of other CO2 system variables. \nThe regional part of the thesis focuses on the Ría de Vigo\, a coastal environment of high ecological and economic importance. Neural networks were trained to reconstruct weekly time series of pH and total alkalinity from 1992 to 2019 at several stations and depth ranges. The results show strong short-term variability\, clear spatial differences between the inner and outer ría\, and long-term pH trends indicating acidification rates higher than those typically observed in the open ocean. \nThe final part of the thesis analyses hydrogen ion concentration and aragonite saturation state in the Ría de Vigo to identify the processes driving variability in the local CO2 system. Seasonal and long-term changes are controlled by photosynthesis and respiration\, carbonate precipitation and dissolution\, freshwater inputs\, solar radiation\, anthropogenic CO2 uptake and remineralisation of organic matter. The magnitude of the observed trends highlights the need for action to protect the ecological value and economic viability of the Ría de Vigo. \n\n
