SUMMARY:II Ciclo de Conferencias "Aida Fernández Ríos"
DESCRIPTION:La Real Academia Gallega de Ciencias ( RAGC) y la Diputación de Pontevedra consideran de interés común colaborar para la realización de la II Edición del Ciclo de Conferencias Aida Fernández Ríos para el año 2021 y así promover el interés del público general\, además de impulsar la enorme labor científica llevado a cabo en Galicia. La RAGC lleva organizando actividades\, cursos y ciclos de conferencias en toda la comunidad gallega desde su fundación en el año 1973\, y en línea con sus objetivos (difundir la ciencia y la tecnología) pretende instaurar este ciclo de conferencias en el que se abordan distintas temáticas con repercusión en la sociedad. \nEn un primero bloque se organizan conferencias en formato webinar impartidas por personas de reconocido prestigio en su ámbito profesional propuestas por la RAGC. Y en un segundo bloque conferencias en centros de enseñanza de la provincia de Pontevedra dirigidas al alumnado de la ESO. \nAida Fernández Ríos (Vigo\, 1947-Moaña\, 2015) fue una investigadora que destacó por su conocimiento en la acedificación de los océanos por mor del cambio climático y la primera mujer en dirigir el Instituto de Investigaciones Pesqueras \nEstudió el bachillerato elemental en Vigo y con 25 años comenzó a trabajar de auxiliar de laboratorio (de aquella no se precisaba más titularidad) en el Instituto de Investigaciones Pesqueras del CSIC\, denominado en la actualidad Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas. Compaginó su trabajo con los estudios\, lo que le permitió concluir el bachillerato superior\, cursar la carrera de Biología en la Universidad de Santiago y\, posteriormente\, en 1992\, leer su tesis de doctorado\, dirigida por Fernando Fraga\, sobre Fitoplacton de la Ría de Vigo y sus condiciones ambientales. Poco después entró cómo investigadora\, adscrita\, en el Instituto de Investigaciones Pesqueras ( IIP)\, centro en el que desarrolló toda su carrera hasta alcanzar la categoría máxima como profesora de investigación. Desde 2006 hasta 2011 fue directora del IIP\, siendo la primera mujer que alcanzó esa responsabilidad. De los estudios sobre lo fitoplacton pasó a los de oceanografía física y\, finalmente\, a los relativos la acidificación del océano a consecuencia del cambio climático\, en los que se convirtió en una investigadora de referencia en Europa\, dirigiendo un Comité Internacional de la Geosfera con esos objetivos desde 2005 a 2011. En 2015 fue nominada académica de número de la Real Academia de Ciencias de Galicia.

SUMMARY:Winners\, losers and shifts of the pelagic ecosystem in the western Mediterranean Sea: integrating knowledge and projecting trajectories of change
DESCRIPTION:Con motivo de la Década de las Ciencias Marinas impulsada por la ONU (#ODS14) que pretende generar un marco común que garantice que las ciencias marinas respaldan plenamente las acciones para gestionar de manera sostenible los océanos y mares del mundo\, y alcanzar así los objetivos de la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible\, los centros de marinos del CSIC: IMEDEA\, CEAB\, ICM\, ICMAN\, y el IIM hemos organizado un ciclo de conferencias conjunto titulado “Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research” por el cual se crea un Foro de discusión entorno a un seminario mensual realizado por un experto reconocido en diferentes temáticas marinas. \n\nWinners\, losers and shifts of the pelagic ecosystem in the western Mediterranean Sea: integrating knowledge and projecting trajectories of change\n\n \n\nNowadays\, the single-stock assessment approach is most used for the management of marine resources. However\, the dynamics of exploited stocks are influenced by other factors than fishing alone. Environmental and ecosystem dynamics\, and economic and social aspects are also highly relevant\, and can interact with fishing impacts. These factors are often overlooked when making management decisions. \n\n \n\nIn particular\, small pelagic fish species (SPF) such as European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) are some of the most commercially exploited species in the NW Mediterranean Sea. They have shown important changes in the last decades in terms of shifts in abundance\, biomass\, body condition\, growth\, reproduction and spatial distribution. Different hypotheses have been formed to explain these changes\, such as an increase in fishing impacts; changes in environmental conditions that have affected annual recruitment\, growth\, general conditions of organisms\, and planktonic productivity and quality; a recent recovery of pelagic predators; and competition for food with jellyfish or round sardinella (Sardinella aurita).\nUnder three consecutive projects\, SPELMED\, PELWEB and PELCAT\, we aimed at improving and integrating SPF knowledge into a multi-modelling platform to quantify the impacts and project future trajectories of change. We specifically aimed at (1) identifying historical changes of small pelagic fish population traits (e.g. body condition\, abundance and distribution); (2) quantifying the ecological and socio-economic consequences of the changes in SPF populations on fisheries\, iconic predator species\, and ecosystem-wide dynamics\, and (3) identifying robust future management options to achieve resilient and healthy SPF populations and a sustainable exploitation under climate change. \n\nDuring this talk\, I will present some of our findings and I will illustrate the importance of an integrated consideration of climatological\, environmental\, ecological and socio-economic factors when managing exploited resources from an ecosystem-based management perspective. I will showcase the tools that we used to generate and integrate results\, ranging from stock assessments to species distribution models and process-oriented ecosystem spatial-temporal models. \n\n  \n\n  \n\n
