SUMMARY:11F2023 | The IIM-CSIC Programme
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Marine Research of the Spanish Research Counil (IIM-CSIC) celebrates once again the commemoration of the «International Day of Women and Girls in STEM» with a programme full of activities that aims to publicise the role of women in marine research. \nFrom IIM\, they’ve developed a complete programme with 3 actions that will shed light on the role of present and past female scientists and technicians\, aiming to bring science closer to the general public and\, above all\, to the #WomenOfScience of the future. \n\n\nAction 1: De cañas coas #MulleresDaCiencia \n \n+ info \nIn a relaxed and chill atmosphere\, the  Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) invites the public to a pleasant meeting with the women who work in this research center. The #MulleresDoIIM (#WomenOfIIM) will tell\, in short 10-minute talks and for all audiences\, what they do in their day-to-day working for marine science from the Bouzas HQ\, while attendees enjoy a free drink and courtesy snacks. \nThe event will be hosted by Marta López Cabo\,  researcher and current vice-director of Scientific Strategy and Transfer at the IIM\, and will be led by female researchers (also pre-doctoral!)\, laboratory and management technicians from the IIM-CSIC. \n☕ Café De Catro a Catro. R. de Girona\, 16\, 36211 (Vigo) \n?️ Saturday\, 11th February | ⏰ at 6:30 p.m.. \n? FREE entry. Includes a drink. Until full capacity is reached. Advance reservation is not required. Tickets will be given to access the drink in a first come first served basis. \nMAP ON GOOGLE MAPS \n\nAction 2: Lanternas da ciencia \n \nOnce again\, the IIM recovers the «Lanternas da Ciencia» initiative\, after the success achieved with the article produced last year. \nThe PhD candidate\, Clara Mendoza\, in collaboration with the centre’s communications manager\, Jaime Amaro Blanco\, puts her voice in a profile piece delving into the biography of an outstanding female scientist whose merits were poorlyrecognised throughout history: Maria Wonenberg. \nClara\, a woman who is now beginning her scientific career at the IIM-CSIC\, tells us about this mathematician from A Coruña\, a benchmark for her in her career and on her way to her doctorate. \nThis will be the 2nd edition of the “Lanternas da Ciencia” campaign\, whose first edition came to light on February 11\, 2022 with a publication in the Faro de Vigo newspaper\, written by Marta López Mozos and starring Eunice N. Foote\, pioneer of the climate crisis. \nThe piece will be published on the 11th February a will be openly accessible on the IIM-CSIC website. The publication will once again combine science and art\, through the illustrations of the artist Laura Romero (@ laurandcolours). \n\nAction 3: Mulleres de ciencia no teu barrio\n \nMarine research takes to the streets of Olivia represented under the image of real women who\, every day\, work for science from the CSIC’s Marine Research Institute in Vigo. The «Women of Science in Your Neighborhood» initiative\, an adaptation of the award-winning original idea of the University of Zaragoza\, will fill the canopies throughout the city with photographs of these workers who will also tell the public a little about their hobbies\, tastes and interests outside the field of science through a present sentence on each image. All to demonstrate that women who do science are normal and close women\, and to promote an approach of society to the world of research and innovation. The campaign is organized by the IIM-CSIC Scientific Culture Unit\, with the collaboration of the Vigo City Council in installing the canopies. \nThe event consists of an exhibition of 12 photographs of researchers\, pre-doctoral researchers and technicians from the IIM-CSIC on up to 30 billboards (canopies) ceded in collaboration by the Vigo City Council. They will all have a quote in which the protagonist tells about her work in the field of science as well as a hobby or interest from her personal life. The installation began on February 6 and will remain on the streets until February 27. \nIn this way\, it is intended to break stereotypes and reinforce the idea that science is close and accessible and that the women who work in it are another group of citizens of our city with hobbies\, friends\, family members and diverse interests like #anyone another person.
