On the occasion of 11F, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, IIM-CSIC is organising a full programme with two main strands: on the one hand, the event “Mariñas en Xogo”, which will take place on 14 February as the central activity; and on the other, the continuation of the Institute’s Pedagogical Mission, with visits to numerous schools across the Vigo metropolitan area.

Mariñas en Xogo: marine science with the women of the IIM, team games and a bite to eat

The event, “Mariñas en Xogo”, is an opportunity to get closer to marine science through the technicians and scientists who work at the IIM.

During the event, we will hear talks by three women about their day-to-day work in marine research. This will serve as an appetiser for the main activity of our 11F programme: the big Mariñas en Xogo game, where three teams, led by these three women, will compete in a game with challenges of all kinds, with science and ocean culture as the central theme.

All this will take place in a friendly and playful setting, free to attend until capacity is reached, where the IIM will invite attendees to their first drink and a snack.

Mariñas en Xogo will take place next Friday, 14 February, from 18:45* to 20:30, at A Morada (Rúa Enrique X. Macías, 6, Vigo).  It is organised by the IIM-CSIC Scientific Culture Unit (UCC+I), the Library Service and the IIM Equality and Diversity Committee. Doors will open at 19:00.

Pedagogical Mission for 11F

In addition to Mariñas en Xogo, IIM-CSIC is organising, together with its women staff members, a full programme of visits to schools in the Vigo area. This continuation of its Pedagogical Mission aims to reach more than 300 children. The programme focuses not only on large urban schools, but also on schools in the metropolitan area and rural districts, where outreach activities are limited or non-existent.

With this initiative, rooted in the centre’s outreach tradition, the IIM aims not only to share knowledge and inspire Galician children, but also to highlight the role of the women who work every day for marine science alongside the Institute.
