Coastal & Environmental Protection

Human activities have direct and indirect effects on the environment, ranging from pollution to coastal erosion or alterations in species distribution. Climate change is expected to compound some of those effects and add new threats to several coastal and maritime industries. Under this scenario, the development of risk assessment tools that provide information that is essential for the establishment of priorities for mitigation and prevention strategies, as well as of early warning systems, is becoming more and more relevant.

The IIM-CSIC has expertise in developing monitoring systems and prediction capabilities to perform timely estimates of key coastal risks, such as the rise of sea level or pollution, acidification, eutrophication, coastal erosion, hydrodynamic alterations, harmful algal blooms or extreme events such as storms, heat waves, cyclones or droughts.

Accurately monitoring and predicting these phenomena also allows implementing early warning systems and management tools for different activities such as fisheries (ClimeFish), aquaculture (ARIOS), ports and transportation, etc.
