Santiago de Compostela, 8 November 2024. The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is launching a broad programme of activities in Galicia to mark Science and Technology Week 2024 and the Month of Science in Galician in Libraries.
The initiatives are promoted by CSIC’s Institutional Delegation in Galicia and by CSIC institutes in the autonomous community.
Activities for Science and Technology Week
IIM initiative in Vigo
The Institute of Marine Research (IIM) is organising an open day on 21 November with five 90-minute sessions in the morning and afternoon. The day includes practical demonstrations and sessions with sign-language interpretation at 10:00 and 16:00. Bookings can be made through Eventbrite, by phone (986 23 19 30) or in person at the IIM reception desk (rúa Eduardo Cabello, 6 – Vigo, Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 19:00).
A talk by researcher María Saura is also planned for 30 November at the Calvario Market, at 11:30, also as part of World Aquaculture Day.
Initiatives of the CSIC Delegation in Galicia
The Scientific Culture Unit of CSIC in Galicia, with the collaboration of the Padre Sarmiento Institute of Galician Studies, promotes “Walking through the history of Santiago”, an activity aimed at contributing to the integration of migrants by creating a bond with historical heritage. The route will cover major monuments and neighbourhoods beyond the medieval walls. It will take place on 16 November from 18:00 to 20:00 with prior booking at ucc.galicia@csic.es.
The Delegation also supports the school drawing and story competition “Livestock”, promoted to mark the International Year of Camelids and aimed at children aged 6 to 11. The drawings will be exhibited at the Liceo Casino de Pontevedra from 18 to 22 November, with the awards ceremony on 22 November.
MBG initiatives
On Sunday, 10 November, at the gourmet fair “Etiqueta Negra”, MBG will present “Culler de Pau and the Misión Biolóxica de Galicia: science, seeds and cuisine”, showing the connection between MBG science and haute cuisine through its Seed Bank. In November, MBG will also host guided visits for schools and institutes and will launch “Research Trials” in schools, associations for people with disabilities and care homes within the Biomisión project.
IEGPS initiatives in Santiago de Compostela and Friol
On 16 November, IEGPS will open in Friol the travelling exhibition “Our Castles. San Paio de Narla and its lords”, together with a school drawing competition and heraldry workshops. IEGPS also promotes the school drawing competition “Xosé Antón García G.-Ledo. Drawing our heritage”, aimed at Primary and Secondary students in Santiago de Compostela.
INCIPIT initiative in Santiago de Compostela
INCIPIT will offer guided visits to its headquarters in the Fontán building at the City of Culture, including the Archaeo-planetarium and adapted activities such as a simulated archaeological excavation using an edible cake for users of Fundación Down Compostela.
Vigo Oceanographic Centre initiative
For the fourth year, the Vigo Oceanographic Centre is launching “In the warmth of the sea in a bar”, three informal science talks in a bar for the general public on current marine topics. They will take place on 21 November at Café Vitruvia at 20:30. Admission is free until capacity is reached.
Activities for the Month of Science in Galician
On Saturdays in November, at 17:00 in the Library of Galicia, CSIC in Galicia will promote workshops including “Now you see me: the magic of the microscopic world” (IIM), “The Seminario de Estudos Galegos: learn by playing” (IEGPS), “What is a medieval scriptorium?” (IEGPS) and “Where is my cup?” (INCIPIT). All workshops are free with prior booking.
The CSIC Scientific Culture Unit in Galicia will also hold a scientific-illustration workshop at the Public Library of Pontevedra, guided by Carmen Vega (MBG), and MBG will run a social-media campaign called “Science Quiz in Galician” to mark the Month of Science in Galician.
