Santiago de Compostela, Thursday, 26 September 2024. The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is once again taking part from Galicia in G-Night, an event that will be held tomorrow, Friday, simultaneously across Europe. This year in Galicia it is again coordinated by the University of Vigo (UVigo).
CSIC’s participation in Galicia is channelled through the Misión Biolóxica de Galicia (MBG), the Padre Sarmiento Institute of Galician Studies (IEGPS), the Institute of Marine Research (IIM), the Institute of Heritage Sciences (INCIPIT) and the Oceanographic Centres of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography in A Coruña and Vigo, which will run activities in Santiago de Compostela, Pontevedra, Vigo and A Coruña.
The IIM takes citizens on a trip through the ría
The IIM will offer a trip through the ría aboard the Nautilus, operated by Ocean Secrets, under the title “Research in the Ría”. People of all ages will be able to discover the marine diversity of the seabed of the Vigo Ría. This activity has already sold out.
Thanks to the use of an ROV, a small underwater robot, the seabed will be observed from the deck of the boat. During the one-and-a-half-hour trip, departing from the company’s dock on As Avenidas, participants will also attend talks by IIM research staff, who will provide context for the observations made from the boat and bring society closer to the science being carried out in the city.
Other initiatives complete the CSIC Galicia programme
MBG will run the “Biomission Escape Room” at its Pontevedra headquarters, aimed at the general public and free with prior registration. IEGPS will offer a historical route through the streets of Compostela and a palaeography workshop for young audiences. INCIPIT will hold an open day at its facilities in the Fontán building and an activity at the Fonseca cloister linked to the European XSCAPE project on material minds.
The IEO Vigo Oceanographic Centre will be at the MARCO annex space with guided workshops led by research and technical staff, while the IEO A Coruña Oceanographic Centre will offer oceanography workshops on the Paseo do Parrote, including experiments on physical processes in the ocean and microscope observations of phytoplankton and zooplankton.
