Marine Biogeochemistry

Description

Understanding the chemical composition of the marine environment, the concentration of different elements and the interactions that occur in coastal areas and generate changes in marine habitats is key for coastal populations to monitor, predict and adapt to global change.

The Marine Biogeochemistry Group (BGQM) focuses its research on the  biogeochemical cycles of minor elements (such as nitrogen, phosphorus or selenium) and trace elements (including bioactive elements, platinum-group elements and rare earth elements) found in the ocean, as well as on exploring exchanges at the land-ocean interface and anthropogenic influences on these cycles.

International collaboration is essential to address the challenges of global change and advance knowledge of our oceans. Therefore, the group studies biogeochemical processes in accordance with the guidelines established by international programs such as Future Earth Coasts (formerly known as LOICZ) and GEOTRACES. It also collaborates with scientific experts in geology and biology, both in Spain and internationally.
