Public Engagement & Citizen Science
Since its beginning, science has been based on results sharing and active dialogue within the scientific community.
Nowadays, scientific institutions are actively working to include the society as a whole in this dialogue, to understand the main concerns of the community around them and to try to provide answers to its uncertainties.
At the Institute of Marine Research, we consider that including society in our work is not only a duty, but a wise and indispensable strategic choice. We aim to transform the way in which our science is made and shared, fostering new initiatives and supporting our researchers to include Public Engagement elements into their projects, following the guidelines that frame European R&I nowadays.
As part of our efforts to engage the public with our work, we are supporting Citizen Science as a powerful tool to include the people 'outside' the academic science world in the production of high-quality marine science. We guide and support our research groups in the implementation of elements of this type of public participation, following international guidelines such as the ECSA Principles of Citizen Science (2015).
Here you may find some projects by our research groups identified by our Engagement with Society Unit (UCC+i) as having Citizen Science elements in them. While they may not be purely Citizen Science projects, they represent a first step on our way towards open and participatory marine science.

What is Citizen Science? To identify our Citizen Science projects (or budding Citizen Science projects), our UCC+i applies the Principles developed by the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) in 2015.
