About IIM
The Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) is one of the main marine research centers in the Iberian Peninsula. Looking at the Atlantic from Vigo, a city with a strong connection with the sea, the IIM-CSIC faces the challenge of increasing our knowledge about the ocean, from its physical characteristics to the food we take from it and the processes that bind the whole system together.
As part of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC), at IIM we take pride in the interdisciplinary nature of our work, aiming to contribute to the UN Sustainability Goals and to support society in overcoming the huge challenges that stand in front of us.
Established in 1951, the Institute of Marine Research has played a key role in our understanding of the ocean and our relationship with it. After seven decades, we are still excited for our future and for the path defined by our vision and strategy.
Science is made by people. From technicians to researchers, students and support staff, around 200 people work tirelessly at the Institute of Marine Research to help society face its challenges.
