Visit the IIM
Before applying to one of these the activities, please, check if you correctly meet the requirements.
At the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) we aim to promote scientific, technological and innovation culture through science communication, training, outreach and public engagement. Therefore, thanks to our Engagement with the Public Unit (UCC+I), we are committed to contributing to the scientific training of students by offering activities in educational centres that request it: guided visits to the IIM-CSIC and workshops and conferences by the scientific and technical staff of the IIM-CSIC.
Visit the IIM-CSIC!
The IIM-CSIC opens its doors to schools and educational centres interested in better understanding what we do from within. Do you want your students to know how a real research institute works? Are you a student association interested in visiting us?
The visits are guided by the staff of our Engagement with the Public Unit, in Galician or Spanish, and are usually carried from 10am to 12:30pm There is one school visit per month. During the tour, the visiting group will be able to visit 3 spaces of the IIM, such as the laboratories, the scientific-technical services and the Aquarium, where members of our staff will explain first-hand the latest topics they are working on. Next, they will talk about how their day-to-day life is like in STEM, what their career has been like and they will answer all the questions they can.
Our in-person visits are perfect for higher courses in institutes (4th year of ESO - Spanish Mandatory Secondary Education taken over 16 years old) and for higher level educational centres (College, Baccalaureate, Universities...) that are looking for new ways to bring their students closer to the science of sustainability and who want promote careers in STEM among future generations of science.
To participate in these visits, schools/entities must meet the following requirements:
• The visiting group must have a maximum of 10 people. Groups between 10 and 20 may be considered, although it is necessary to check the availability of IIM’s staff to manage the visit.
• The group must be in 4th year of ESO or higher courses.
• The management of the school/responsible entity must issue an Affidavit declaring that all participating students have insurance that would cover them in the event of an accident during the school visit to the IIM-CSIC.
• In the event that the visiting group includes minors, the Centre/Responsible Entity Management must issue an Affidavit stating that it has the permission of the parents/guardians for the students to attend the school activity.
• Prior to the visit, it will be necessary for the Management of the responsible centre/entity to present to the IIM-CSIC the list with the identification of the students and teaching staff and the document of stating their conformity/non-conformity for the IIM to use the students’ image and voice, as well as the teachers’ and companions’.
• Please note that the visit to the IIM-CSIC is free, but it does not cover the travel expenses of visitors to the research centre or any other expenses derived from it.
ACCESSIBILITY NOTE: Unfortunately, the Institute of Marine Research building is an old construction with many narrow spaces that make it impossible to visit in wheelchairs. For other accessibility issues, complete the "Accessibility" section of our form.
• Request a guided tour of the IIM-CSIC
Or... have the IIM visit you!
An alternative way of approaching our work is for the staff of the Institute of Marine Research to come to their classrooms or centres, either to give specific workshops or conferences or to participate in other types of activities organised by the school or the organising entity.
• Request a school extension activity
We will send these requests to the research groups and scientific-technical services of your interest.
About the requests
Requests must be made from the Directorate or the Head of Studies of the school, or from the Directorate of the responsible entity.
Once the school year ends, the application waiting list will restart. However, schools that had requested it and were not able to carry out the activity will have priority to request the activities in the following year.
Before requesting the activity...
1. Check if the work of the Research Groups or Scientific-Technical Support Units of the IIM-CSIC can respond to some of the Specific Competencies or Basic Knowledge that you are working on in the classroom this academic year.
2. Determine at what point in the course they will acquire this knowledge. It is interesting that the activity is a support for the classes already taught, although it is not essential. If there are transversal topics that you consider of interest (e.g. ways to start working at the CSIC), do not hesitate to comment in the "Other questions and comments" section of the application form.
3. Indicate on the form the information about the student body that you think we need to know, especially that related to accessibility.
