The Marine Research Institute (IIM) is a research center of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) dedicated to the comprehensive study of marine ecosystems and their resources, from a scientific, technological and applied perspective.
Since its creation, the IIM has carried out intense research activity aimed at generating excellent knowledge, transferring results to society and supporting decision-making in key areas such as marine conservation, the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture resources, and the impact of global change on the oceans.
The Institute’s mission is based on:
Research is the basis of the work of the Marine Research Institute. Working around three core research themes that are intertwined and connected to one another, the technical and research staff of the IIM-CSIC seek answers related to nine different research lines.
This website aims to provide a clear and up-to-date overview of the scientific, technical and management activity carried out at the Institute, as well as to facilitate access to relevant information for the research community, the center’s staff, public administrations, partner companies and society in general.
Through the different sections, you can learn about our mission, organizational structure, research lines, support services, internal committees and administrative procedures, as part of an exercise in transparency, coordination and continuous improvement.
Our laboratory technical staff, or staff with degrees in Marine Sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Engineering, as well as in Economics, Law or Communications (both employees and trainees), contribute to the multidisciplinary nature of our center. With more than 200 people working there, the IIM-CSIC is a large community of people who collaborate with one another in the name of science, knowledge and sustainability.
Science is not complete until it is shared with society. As a public research institution, the IIM understands that its commitment is to society and promotes a mutual relationship with the community around it and an open perspective on science.
