Short bio

I am a Principal Researcher part of the MARSOCIAL research group. I hold a PhD in Social and Environmental Sustainability and have >25 years of research experience working in small-scale fisheries around the globe, fisheries governance and fishers’ rights, fisheries markets and value chains, sustainable aquatic food systems and seafood traceability. I have been involved in 30 international projects and contributed to >100 publications on these topics. I am an expert in socioeconomics of fisheries for the United Nations World Ocean Assessment (UN-WOA), co-chair of the ICES working group on social indicators (WGSOCIAL) and part of the Management Committee of the COST Action RethinkBlue. I also take part on several further committees at ICES (WGRMES, WGCEPH) and international networks focused on small-scale fisheries (TBTI international network; SSFhub) and have previously been a member of the Management Committee of COST actions (OCEANGOV and MARCONS) and the Portuguese National hub for the Atlantic Action Plan.
