Short bio

I first arrived to the department of Oceanography in IIM in March 2002 when I was finishing my basic degree in Aquatic Sciences (University of Oporto, 2002), to develop my final degree work for 6 months related to the microplankton composition and primary production in the Galician shelf. In 2003, I got a doctoral fellowship from the FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) and came back to develop my PhD work regarding the microzooplankton feeding impact in three European marine systems. Since the PhD completion (University of Oporto, 2009), I worked as a research assistant in the same Department until 2015 for several research projects. During this whole period, my research was related to the marine microbial plankton variability, diversity and function, including their response to changes in marine systems induced by human action. In 2016, I moved to the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) and Department of Biology at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) with a post-doc grant from the FCT to apply molecular techniques to the study of the smallest fractions of the eukaryotic microbial plankton. Additionally, I also studied microbial plankton communities in estuaries and its transition from reservoirs to the ocean and the response of microbial plankton communities to climate change. Since October 2021, I am again at the department of Oceanography in IIM with a postdoctoral research contract cofunded by the Talento Senior program by Xunta de Galicia, in order to study and develop prediction tools for the occurrence of harmful algal blooms.
