Santiago de Compostela, 7 June 2023. Tomorrow is World Ocean Day and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is joining the celebration with activities promoted by the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC, Vigo) and the Oceanographic Centres of A Coruña and Vigo (IEO-CSIC).
The activities are aimed at bringing marine science closer to society and highlighting the importance of the ocean for life on the planet, the economy, climate regulation and the wellbeing of coastal communities.
At the IIM-CSIC, the Scientific Culture Unit is promoting outreach actions connected with ocean literacy and the value of marine research. The programme includes activities for different audiences and forms part of the centre’s commitment to strengthening the dialogue between science and society.
The IEO-CSIC centres in A Coruña and Vigo are also joining the commemoration with initiatives that present their scientific work and the role of oceanography in understanding and protecting marine ecosystems.
World Ocean Day is celebrated every 8 June to raise awareness of the need to conserve and sustainably use the ocean, a shared space that is essential for biodiversity, food, climate and culture.
