Bivalves as providers of ecosystem services
On 15 May, the research network BIVALRED: Network for the study and promotion of bivalve ecosystem services will be presented.
Within the activities of the BIVALRED research network (@BivalRed2024) and the “European Maritime Day in your Country”, this workshop aims to integrate scientific knowledge from different disciplines around the study of the ecosystem services provided by bivalves and to raise public awareness of the goods and services these molluscs provide through several practical cases.
The BIVALRED research network will also be presented as a tool to improve coordination among researchers from different disciplines as drivers of collective action around bivalve conservation.
Overall, the workshop aims to promote awareness, dialogue, collaboration and action to highlight the full potential of bivalves as providers of ecosystem services while addressing conservation challenges in a context of global change and fostering sustainable development.

What is BIVALRED?
BIVALRED is a research network designed as a tool to study and promote the ecosystem services of bivalves. The network is coordinated by IIM-CSIC and includes researchers from the University of Cádiz, the University of Vigo, the University of the Basque Country, the Oceanographic Centres of Murcia, Cádiz and Vigo (IEO-CSIC), the Torre de la Sal Aquaculture Institute (IATS-CSIC) and the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC). Its goals include promoting long-term collaboration among network research groups, integrating scientific knowledge from different disciplines, establishing protocols for shared analysis and use of equipment and infrastructures, promoting staff mobility, transferring knowledge among groups, raising public awareness of the goods and services provided by bivalves, encouraging public policies that support aquaculture and bivalve restoration, and strengthening links with international organisations working on the recovery of bivalve populations and their ecosystem services.
