Presentation of the Scientific Illustration Manual – Illustraciencia

On Monday, 12 December, the new Scientific Illustration Manual by Illustraciencia will be presented in Vigo. Illustraciencia is an initiative with more than a decade of experience promoting and rewarding natural and scientific illustration.
The presentation will take place at the headquarters of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra in Vigo and will feature:
- Xosé Pintado Valverde – Deputy Director for Scientific Culture at IIM-CSIC
- Sara Carrasco – illustrator at 13GRADOS
- Miquel Baidal, Fernando Correia and Clara Cerviño – coordinating team of the Manual

The event is part of the Manual presentation tour, which previously visited Madrid and Barcelona and will continue with two events in Galicia:
- 13 December, in A Coruña, at Libraría Berbiriana.
- 14 December, in Santiago de Compostela, at the USC Natural History Museum.
A manual for getting started in scientific illustration
With Illustraciencia’s Scientific Illustration Manual you will discover what the work of a scientific illustrator involves, learn the most common techniques in this discipline and receive advice from professionals on illustrating different biological groups, from botany and zoology to molecular, medical, archaeological and palaeontological illustration. The book includes practical exercises and questions related to the most important aspects to consider when approaching a project.
You will discover that scientific illustration is essential for communicating knowledge, as it is an ideal discipline for conveying the results of research and scientific projects rigorously and truthfully. Its contents arise from the authors’ accumulated experience in scientific illustration training and aim to help anyone who wishes to enter a profession in which art and science come together. At the same time, the book awakens interest in science and nature through more than 300 illustrations contributed by the Illustraciencia community.
Illustraciencia is a project created in 2009 to promote scientific and natural illustration. It carries out numerous activities, including the International Scientific and Naturalist Illustration Award, the Online Scientific Illustration Congress and specialised academic training.
Clara Cerviño, Miquel Baidal and Fernando Correia coordinate the production of this manual, which could not have been created without the involvement and collaboration of Illustraciencia Academy teachers, students, participants in the scientific illustration competition and the wider Illustraciencia community.
