The role of statistics in marine research

The “Encontros Espresso” are a series of talks held at IIM-CSIC with the aim of helping us get to know each other better, learn more about the activity carried out at our centre and explore the world of marine science, encouraging scientific and technical discussion and strengthening links between groups.
These events are designed especially for our staff, but everyone is invited to join through our streaming broadcast.
This new format will begin at 10:00 in the IIM-CSIC Assembly Hall, and will include complimentary coffee (“Espresso”) to help communication flow smoothly.
This time we will meet our colleague Isabel Fuentes, PhD in Statistics and Operations Research from the Organic Biogeochemistry Laboratory (IIM-CSIC).
The role of statistics in marine research
The Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) is a multidisciplinary centre where topics ranging from the physical and chemical characteristics of the ocean to the food it provides are studied, with special attention to the impact of human activity on the oceans in the current context of climate change.
From a statistical point of view, working in a centre such as IIM means dealing with different types of data, both in size and in “shape”. On the one hand, we work with large high-resolution databases (Big Data) and small experimental datasets. On the other, we deal with numerical and categorical variables, circular data, functional data, compositional data, spatio-temporal data, point processes and more. The role of statistics in this complex ecosystem is to develop analysis and inference tools adapted to each type of data. This talk will present recent advances in statistical inference for complex data that can help extract as much information as possible from data that, in most cases, are very difficult to obtain and are fundamental for continuing to advance in different areas of marine research.
Isabel Fuentes Santos
She holds a PhD in Statistics and Operations Research from the University of Santiago de Compostela since February 2016. Her main research line is non-parametric inference in the framework of spatial point processes, in collaboration with the Modestya group at USC within projects of the State Research Agency.
She has been part of the Institute of Marine Research since 2010 as a member of the ESMABA groups and the Organic Biogeochemistry Laboratory. Her main functions are statistical analysis of oceanographic and mussel-aquaculture data, development of statistical models, application of new inference techniques to marine research and statistical support for colleagues in the group. She has participated in European projects focused on the impact of climate change on aquaculture (ClimeFISH) and on the assessment and promotion of ecosystem services from low-trophic aquaculture, such as mussel aquaculture in Galicia (Aquavitae). She is currently part of PT5 of the Marine Sciences Programme of Galicia.
