Ocean Literacy
Understanding how the ocean impacts our lives and how our lives affect the ocean; that is, in short, Ocean Literacy.
At the Institute of Marine Research, we take inspiration from this concept, following the lead and actively pushing forward the agenda of key organizations such as the IOC-UNESCO or the EU4Ocean Coalition for Ocean Literacy.
Scientific research is the first step towards a better-informed relationship with the sea and its resources, one that can be fully sustainable in the long term. However, there's also a need to get this knowledge across to the millions of people who live their everyday lives influenced, whether or not they are aware, by marine ecosystems. In our quest towards the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, and specifically towards SDG14 (Life Under Water), we aim to provide all members of our society with resources, spaces and opportunities to explore, both with us and by themselves, the exciting world that lies below the surface and the many ways in which it becomes an essential part of our everyday life.
On this page, you can find some resources that showcase our work on promoting Ocean Literacy in our community. For more information on Ocean Literacy and everything it entails, we recommend visiting IOC-UNESCO's Ocean Literacy for All: a Toolkit.
