Observation and Modeling of Oceanic and Coastal Systems
Whether operating independently or integrated into operational systems or reanalysis products, observation and modeling systems are the fundamental pillar on which marine research relies to observe, understand, explain and predict changes on this dynamic Blue Planet.
Ocean observations and services are urgently needed to respond to growing concern about ocean health and to the demand for information products that help countries manage their ocean-based economies.
At IIM-CSIC, we aim to improve both observational datasets and model outputs with the help of new sensors, instruments, algorithms, analytical techniques, computing and information technologies, and applications and validations of numerical models, to better study and monitor oceanographic processes and anthropogenic impacts on them. All this follows the path set by international authorities and strategies such as the 2030 Strategy for the Global Ocean Observing System of IOC-UNESCO, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Science Council (ISC).
