On 12 June, the Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC) will hold a special day of scientific activities as part of the commemoration of its 75th anniversary (1951–2026).
The initiative will bring together pupils from several schools during the morning and will open its doors to the public in the afternoon to bring marine research closer through participatory workshops, experiments and experiences designed to discover the ocean through science.
The activity will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Alameda de Eduardo Cabello, opposite IIM-CSIC, and will offer a close look at some of the research carried out at the centre to understand, conserve and make sustainable use of marine ecosystems and resources.
During the morning, 5th- and 6th-year primary school pupils will take part in a route through different scientific workshops organised by the institute’s departments. Through practical activities adapted to their age, they will discover how researchers work and learn about some of the scientific challenges linked to the ocean, marine biodiversity, aquaculture, genetics and environmental change.
In the afternoon, the event will be open to the general public, offering people of all ages the opportunity to approach marine science in an engaging, participatory and accessible way.
The planned activities include observing zebrafish embryos and adult specimens, experiences related to mussel biology and feeding, dynamics for identifying marine species from skeletal remains, workshops to discover the role of DNA in biodiversity and species conservation, and proposals to understand the effects of ocean acidification on marine organisms.
In addition to the scientific workshops, the space will include an institutional tent showing audiovisual materials on the centre’s research activity, its main lines of research and some of the projects currently being developed in areas such as oceanography, marine ecology, biotechnology, sustainable aquaculture and food technology.
This initiative forms part of the programme of activities organised to mark IIM-CSIC’s 75th anniversary and reflects the institute’s commitment to scientific outreach, knowledge transfer and strengthening the links between science and society.
An invitation to discover, experiment and learn how marine research helps us understand the ocean, protect its biodiversity and address some of the major environmental and social challenges of our time.
