As people devoted to researching the world around us, at IIM-CSIC we are well aware of the diversity found in nature, and we know that the scientific community is no exception.
For this reason, the Equality and Diversity Committee was created: a team that seeks to implement measures that help resolve conflicts and make visible the problems related to discrimination based on gender, race or affective-sexual diversity in science.
The working group strives to prevent these behaviours and to provide information on them. It develops protocols and implements them in our centre, creating a safe and open space for everyone who works here doing science (technical staff, researchers and staff from all other areas).
The committee is established as one of the Equality Committees of the CSIC ICUs, aligning the Institute with international and national programmes and objectives on equality and diversity. This includes the Sustainable Development Goals, such as SDG 5: Gender Equality, the objectives set by the European Research Area (ERA) and by the European Commission for the whole European research and innovation area, as well as the legal mandates established by Spanish legislation on equality and the protection and inclusion of diversity.
The IIM equality and diversity team works in line with, and seeks coordination with, other entities; its internal relationship with the Science Culture Unit (UCC+I) and the IIM Library is particularly close, especially in visibility and information tasks. Within CSIC, links have also been established with other committees, such as the CSIC Women and Science Committee, and externally with related associations such as PRISMA – Association for Affective-Sexual and Gender Diversity in Science, Technology and Innovation and long-standing initiatives such as the 11F Initiative or Oceánicas, developed by IEO-CSIC.
