Sustainability Committee

  • Comités

Sustainability lies at the heart of our work. At the IIM we seek to create a more sustainable society and, to do so, we must begin with our own centre.

As one of the main multidisciplinary marine research centres on the Iberian Peninsula, at the Institute we use our research to benefit society and to make its relationship with the ocean and with the rest of our world healthy and sustainable in the long term.

In addition, we are fully committed to the 2030 Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, as well as to the European Green Deal. This set of initiatives aims to put the EU on the path towards a green transition, with the ultimate goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

Along these lines, and to minimize environmental impacts and meet the aforementioned commitments to the SDGs and the European Green Deal, the main objective of the IIM-CSIC Sustainability Committee is to promote sustainability in all areas of the centre, fostering a culture of respect for the environment.

The Committee’s functions include identifying and reducing the environmental impact of IIM-CSIC’s activities and operations, implementing waste-management, energy-efficiency and resource-saving policies, and promoting sustainable practices among staff. In addition, the committee advises on the adoption of clean technologies, promotes environmental training and awareness, and is a pioneer within CSIC in integrating a sustainable approach to reduce, as far as possible, the environmental impacts of research projects, from planning to execution and the dissemination of the results obtained.
